If you call it an association and make it voluntary to join but then lobby employers or schools to require licenses/certs or limit engineer slots you can get away with a lot more and people won't teargas you

my workplace has a small union for people in the job classification area I'm in; I get an email about meetings every now and then

nobody seems to really care hence the small membership so

You joke but 2000-2008 and the resulting 2010 governors races brought about the current neovictorian atmosphere, and people cheered for it as it was enacted.

I make a lot of money and don't work very hard. I can be fired at any moment but I don't care because I can get another job easily and am financially secure. my ability to switch jobs gives me leverage in negotiating and employers seem to want to keep me happy.
why would I want to join a union?

when you're making 10 bucks an hour, those 2.5 going to the union is a lot. (i was working security over the summer as a poor student more than a decade ago)

Obviously the network/systems team would be part of the union and would block the scabs from accessing any IT resources.

reddits r/talesfromtechsupport has a regular who works in a unionized it work place and it's basically heaven as they get to shortlist candidates for managing positions.

no surprisingly their view of a good manager is someone who understands their position and world, and by coincidence I'm sure comes from their ranks

yeah that does not sound at all normal, my union fees are £30/month or something and they scale by how much you get paid so a min wage worker pays basically nothing

what you're describing sounds like a scam by a dodgy employer tbh
