SASC-89 Week 2 Preview



Estoril 6 Hours
(Note that the turn 8-9-10 complex did not exist in 1989; the layout will follow the grey line instead)

The SASC Championship arrives in Europe in sunny Portugal, for a race at the historical Estoril Circuit. A long main straight, combined with sweeping corners and large elevation changes makes this a very challenging track.



Silverstone 6 Hours

Round 7 will be at the historic Silverstone Circuit in the UK, the first of two races in that country. Flat, with sweeping bends and long straights, Silverstone is one of the fastest tracks in the entire SASC Championship, and likely will be the best-attended 6-hour race of the entire season; Silverstone is, after all, the de-facto heart of British motorsport, and the surrounding area is home to a substantial part of the global motorsport industry.



Brands Hatch 12 Hours

The second British round of the SASC takes place in idyllic Kent, just southeast of London, on one of the most beloved and historic race tracks in all of Europe. While this is one of the shortest tracks run in the SASC, at just under 4 kilometres in length, it will still pose a tremedous challenge for drivers and cars alike, with elevation changes and blind, multi-apex corners abound.



Le Mans 24 Hours
(Note: we will be running the layout of Le Mans accurate to the time period of the race in 1989; so, no chicanes on Mulsanne, and the orignal, gentle Dunlop chicane)

The granddaddy of them all - the longest, hardest and most prestigious race in the entire SASC Championship, the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. cars, drivers and teams will be pushed to the absolute limit here; expect lots of drama.



Hockenheim 6 Hours

Week 2 concludes at the Hockenheimring in southwest Germany. This is the fastest track in the entire SASC Championship, with the Prototypes expected to lap at an average speed approaching 200 kilometres per hour. Beyond anything else, horsepower matters here.

NEMW submitted a revised Group A car, I went and fixed many mistakes in all my entries, and also launched that much-vaunted new engine in my Prototype.

FLAMAR-BOWL! - Flamarbol Wins Big, CMW Blunders In Portugal

ESTORIL - Flamarbol notched two class wins, including the first of the season for their Group A team this afternoon in a hotly-contested race at Autodromo do Estoril. CMW, leading the Group A race virtually wire to wire, blundered late in the race as both 976 3.5Rs had to pit on the very last lap, their fuel loads miscalculated by team engineers at the previous stop. CMW's frustration and anger was seething after the race, the entire Group A team holing up behind closed doors for a post-race meeting and making no comments to the media afterward, even as their teammates in Group C celebrated their sixth consecutive podium finish, and their dramatically revised Prototype their first 1-2 overall and class finish of the season.

VH Racing made it five wins in a row in Group C, their V12 Specials narrowly beating CMW in a fierce race; the CMWs were every bit a match for the V12 Specials, but their smaller fuel tanks meant they had a dozen pit stops to VH's eleven, which in the end proved to be the margin of victory and then some. Still, in spite of this, CMW is pleased to see the 976 3.8 RSR closed the gap considerably to class-leading VH Racing, and they feel that with some tweaks to their strategy, they should be on the top step of the podium before too long. NEMW struggled into fifth and sixth in class, the #50 Assabet GT-R losing its rear clamshell on the long start-finish straight late in the race.

Group B once again proved to be full of drama, with five of eight cars involved in some form of mishap during the course of the race, including both Flamarbols and the second-place #53 NEMW entry. Automurdermotive and LATOY were able to capitalise on the weaknesses of the front-runners, matching their high finishes for the season in both cases and scoring some much-needed points in the Constructor standings.

In Group A, apart from the drama that unfolded in the last laps of the race, the category ran smoothly and without any incident once again, the drivers here proving themselves to be both highly competitive and very gentlemanly at the same time. FISH struggled for pace this afternoon, their car more optimised for the high-speed circuits such as what we saw in the first leg of the championship, rather than the slower, more technical circuits such as Estoril. Despite this, they still remain very much in the hunt for the class Constructor title, with only 19 points separating them from first-place Flamarbol - and with only a quarter of the season in the books, it is still very much anyone's championship, for every team in Group A no less. Even last-place NEMW is less than 300 points away from first place; while a win from them would be an incredibly difficult achievement, considering the caliber of their opponents, it is possible nonetheless.

MUTED VICTORY - CMW, VH And Flamarbol Win At Sombre Silverstone

SILVERSTONE - It was a quiet celebration today after the seventh round of the SASC Championship, with none of the usual jubilation in light of the terrible tragedy in Sheffield yesterday afternoon, where dozens of football fans lost their lives. The grid paused for a moment of silence before the race to give thought to those who perished. In spite of the mood the race went on, the drivers fighting hard and putting on a tremendous show.

CMW made it two overall wins in a row, with the #3 Turbo 8 notching their first win of the season, averaging 165.637 kilometres per hour over six hours of racing, and finishing a lap ahead of the sole remaining CRT-NEMW, the #6 crashing out at the midpoint and notching the New England team's first retirement of the season in the Prototype class.

Group C was all VH Racing once again, taking their fifth 1-2 finish of the season, in spite of the class-leading V12 Special grinding to a halt on their last lap with an engine failure. In spite of this, they were able to retain second place by the narrowest of margins, the two CMWs ending up only 45 seconds behind. NEMW struggled once again, their big mid-engined coupe finding it difficult to keep up with their featherweight rivals.

Flamarbol continued their domination of Group B this afternoon, both cars finishing three laps up on the two NEMW Merrimacks in an uncharacteristically clean race - all eight Group B cars finished without so much as a single incident between them. LATOY showed some encouraging speed this afternoon, their car better-suited to the fast corners and straights that make up Silverstone than the Automurdermotive Fiasco Furiousos, that car being better suited to the more technical tracks.

Group A once again was the race to watch, with six cars finishing on the lead lap, frequently trading places as the race wore on. Vowing to not make the same mistake they made at Estoril, CMW made good on their performance this time, earning the team their first class win in four races after a string of mediocre performances. FISH and Flamarbol, on the other hand, were locked in a wheel-to-wheel battle more reminiscent of a touring car sprint rather than a GT race, with five seconds separating third through sixth place, and barely more than a car length between each of the two FISH Aluveras and the #20 Flamarbol. The crowd roared with delight as the lead Flamarbol boldly tried to overtake the the #1 FISH into Bridge chicane, locking up all four wheels in a desperate attempt to get slowed down in time and prevent a colossal accident. Ultimately it was too much to hold, and the finishing order remained unchanged.

Not sure if mid week revisions are a thing or if they take place at the end of the week. Anywho, I'm stuck at home with a killer head cold waiting for a repair guy to show up so I've had a few tweaks (I think, can't keep a track of where my current revisions are at :rolleyes:) Initially I was going to wait and go with a whole new engine family so I could be far more competitive in Group A. I don't quite have the points for that but tbh I can't make my revised architecture work in my current chassis so I guess I'll soldier on with the current family.

ICE COLD - CMW Sweeps Top Spots In Chilly Brands Hatch Race

SWANLEY - CMW utterly dominated the field today at the Brands Hatch 12 Hours, winning overall, as well as in Group A and C. The team, who have struggled since the beginning of the season with reliability and mediocre performance, was absolutely elated to see their cars take all three wins in their three classes. Not to say it was easy though; both CRT-CMW Prototypes had accidents avoiding slower traffic on the challenging and often blind GP circuit, a track that in spite of its long history, is now criticised by the SASC drivers as being "too small, too dangerous and generally not great for racing these modern cars". NEMW's prototypes showed strongly as well today, with the #6 CRT-NEMW Neponset leading part of the race before finishing second overall, and before a suspension failure in the fourth hour, the #5 was running a comfortable third overall.

In Group C, CMW knocked VH Racing off the top step of the podium, the Group C 976s winning their first race since the opening round at Daytona. The V12 Specials could not make good on their speed and power advantage here at Brands Hatch, which favours cars with good handling more than straight-line performance. In spite of this, the #37 V12 Special still finished a respectable third place; the #38 struggled all race, having an accident in the fifth hour which evidently caused some damage to that car's cooling system, causing it to grind to a halt on-track just 45 minutes later. NEMW struggled with the tight circuit here, but with a smooth and clean race still managed to come out of the race having narrowed the gap to VH Racing in the Constructor Standings.

Flamarbol continued their run of strong finishes, taking their fourth 1-2 finish in Group B and the team's seventh class win of the season, opening up their lead in the Group B standings even further going into the critical 24 Hours of Le Mans next round. NEMW finished third overall with a great drive by the #53 Merrimack GT-R, but the lead #52 spun and went off at Hawthorns in the eighth hour, costing that team valuable points after finishing in eighth place in class. Automurdermotive and LATOY both ran strongly, making up some ground on NEMW in the standings, though the lead Fiasco Furiouso had a bit of a run-in with the lead CMW prototype in the fifth hour, both cars needing minor repairs to damaged bodywork.

CMW put valuable breathing space between them and rivals Flamarbol and FISH with their second 1-2 finish in Group A, finishing a lap up on both teams, who once again ended up in a dramatic race right to the very end, with both Flamarbols and both FISHes swapping places right to the very end of the race. Tempers flared a few times over the long race, with some minor contact between the cars as they jockeyed for position, and with some long, intimidating stares being sent from one pit box to another at times. NEMW ran well until the eighth hour, when the lead Hoosic SE-R experienced a colossal engine failure in the drama-packed eighth hour, the driver narrowly missing serious injury as the #54 car almost completely involved with flame even before the driver could bring it to a stop along the Minter straight. Automurdermotive and LATOY rounded out the field in Group A once again, both teams putting on a glitzy show for their sponsors in the paddock; your correspondent particularly enjoyed the hospitality of the Finnish LATOY team, who, after announcing yet another major sponsorship deal, partied well into the night with copious amounts of vodka and delicious foods, each with names even more incomprehensible than the last...

We got some rather good recipes from an eastern-bloc customer who asked us to develop engines for some rather exotic submersibles. We also have pretty good coffee too in case you need some too.

24 FOR FOUR - Four Teams Win Le Mans Thriller

LE MANS - As if the 1989 edition of the SASC Championship needed any further stirring up, the 24 Hours of Le Mans provided just that. Top teams struggled while back markers had some season-best finishes, and unexpected teams finished on the podium in a tough race.

The weather was cool and overcast all race long, and while the threat of showers loomed for the first twelve hours, they did materialise. Because of that, the teams were able to aggressively attack the track, setting fast lap after fast lap in the nearly ideal conditions. The fastest lap of the race went to the second-place #4 CRT-CMW, setting a 3:39.012 in the small hours of the morning, for an average speed of 224.026 kilometres per hour over the 13.629-kilometre lap.

VH Racing continued their run of strong finishes, notching their sixth 1-2 finish of the season and cementing their position at the top of the Constructor Standings. CMW was unable to match the pace of the V12 Specials, and also struggled with their rule-mandated small fuel tank, which sent their cars onto pit lane 50 times during the 24 Hours, as opposed to VH's 39. NEMW struggled for speed, finishing fourth in class as their second Assabet GT-R crashed heavily at midnight, then experienced an engine early Sunday afternoon.

The anguish of NEMW's rough day in Group C was more than offset by the Group B team, with the #53 Merrimack GT-R notching the team's second win of the season in dominant fashion over Flamarbol. The French fans took great interest in the big purple coupes, their gloriously loud inline-6s could be heard snarling for miles up and down the track. Unfortunately, their hopes of a 1-2 finish were dashed early, the #54 crashing at Arnage early in the race an needing almost two hours of repairs in the garage. LATOY was deliriously happy when their #16 RM2000 crossed the line fourth in class, proving that their reliability is as much a virtue as outright speed. Automurdermotive was forced to run a conservative race after the #88 Fiasco Furiouso lost its engine spectacularly down the Mulsanne straight just shy of ten hours in.

After two wildly close races in a row, most fans and journalists were excited at the prospect of a similar situation at Le Sarthe; this was, however, not destined to happed, with the #1 FISH Aluvera regaining their lost form and finishing eight laps clear of second-place CMW. Their success, however, was not mirrored in the Constructor Championship, as the #2 car missed a shift at Dunlop and blew the engine barely an hour into the race. Flamarbol also struggled at Le Mans, with both of their cars sidelined by engine failure and accidents alike. This once again left LATOY the opportunity to sneak in for a strong finish, and like their senior partner the TM2000s did not let it go, finishing sixth and seventh in class for their best result of the season. NEMW struggled at this race, but the Group A team did not give up in spite of daunting odds. After a huge accident just before sunrise following a brake failure, the mechanics for the #54 Hoosic GT-R raced to rebuild that car in order to get it out on track, taking almost seven and a half hours to rebuild the car. Totally exhausted after their valiant effort, the #54 returned to the track shortly after ten in the morning with the daunting task of trying to finish the requisite 70% distance in order to score points. The drivers went absolutely flat-out, needing to finish 55 laps in the remaining five hours. It was a daunting task, but not impossible. Sadly, a couple of caution periods dashed their hopes late, preventing them from making the distance.

BEYOND THE LIMIT - NEMW Wins Overall As Group C Suffers At Challenging Hockenheim

HOCKENHEIM - NEMW marked their return to the top step on the podium, the #6 Neponset winning the team's first race since Road America, turning the expected running order in the Prototype class upside down, seemingly as the entire world, from China to Poland, turns upside down too. Both Prototype teams struggled with reliability issues, with a bad bunch of fuel pumps from one of CRT's suppliers ending in lengthy stays in the garage for one car from each team.

Group C was, predictably, a bit of a bloodbath, the extreme nature of the Hockenheim track pushing this class, already on the very limit of what the state of the art can provide, up to and beyond the limit. In the end, only the class winning #62 CMW 976 and the second-place #51 NEMW Assabet GT-R were able to race problem-free, with both VHs suffering engine trouble, and accidents felling the other CMW and NEMW entries. It is also thought that the #62 CMW suffered some sort of failure or performance degradation late in the race, as the car slowed dramatically in the closing laps, and was quickly loaded onto one of the transporters and whisked away from the track after post-race scrutineering.

Flamarbol continued their dominant run in Group B, though the Merrimack GT-Rs of NEMW gave them a tremendous challenge all race long. In the end, the NEMWs were not quite able to leverage their pit stop advantage over the Flamarbols, and ended up a lap down when the chequered flag dropped. LATOY had a strong race as well, even after the lead RM2000 suffered a minor accident on the first lap as it tangled with one of the Group C NEMWs. Automurdermotive too ran a clean, if uneventful race; rumours place that team working on an improved version of both Fiasco models, though this newspaper's correspondents were unable to verify through inside sources whether this is true or not.

FISH dominated Group A once again, their sleek and powerful car ideal for the fast track layout here, both the #1 and 2 cars racing cleanly to finish two laps clear of CMW and Flamarbol. The racing between the two rear-engined rivals was fierce and clean, with drivers for both teams remarking how hard both teams were pushing each other under the typical late spring day here in southwest Germany. Further down the field, Automurdermotive and NEMW ran a fairly tight race with one another, but in the end the speed advantage for the Hoosic SE-R was too much to overcome for the Fiascos, with NEMW taking a critical seventh and eighth place finish.

So ends the end of the second leg of the SASC-89 Championship, with the Constructor standings closing up dramatically in all four classes, we now move toward what will likely be the hardest and most punishing leg of the entire series, with races ranging from exciting, cosmopolitan Montreal, to challenging Imola, as well as the most formidable track of all, the mighty Nordschliefe.

So I have a question: can I enter a chassis into a new class to replace an old chassis (ie, making a new trim of my group B to group C specs to replace my current C chassis)? in this way, as I interpret the rules, it isn't a "new" chassis family, but a new trim of an already homologated chassis family.

Well now, that's not something I had considered when writing the rules...

There are no provisions in the rules to allow an all-new chassis family to replace an existing one. Further to that, there is also nothing in the rules saying you can't submit a new chassis trim to replace an existing chassis family in another class, provided that it complies with the rules.

In this case, a new chassis trim expanding to another class will still cost 25 Revision Points; all the Revision Points in the class for which the replacement is being made will be lost, and going forward Revision Points will be pooled for both variants, as they are already. The same interpretation applies to engines as well - the 100 point burn only applies if you make an all-new engine family (as I did with my Prototype for Week 2).

SASC Week 3 Preview



Montreal 6 Hours

The SASC returns to North America to begin the third leg of the season in sunny and beautiful Montreal, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This semi-permanent street circuit combines fast straights with tight, blind corners, hard braking zones and little to no runoff area. A fan and driver favourite alike.



Watkins Glen 12 Hours

Set in upstate New York, Watkins Glen is considered by many to be one of the premier motor racing tracks in all of North America. Long straights, sweeping bends and large elevation changes make this a very challenging track.



Nurburgring 24 Hours

Set in the Eifel Mountains in West Germany, the Nordschliefe is quite rightly called "The Green Hell" - any of the most brutal and challenging elements of any race track in this series can also be found here. In this layout, the track combines the Nordschliefe with the GP-Strecke (in black), for a total length of 25.947 kilometres.



Zolder 6 Hours

The other big (and often forgotten) race track in Belgium, Zolder is set in the north east of the country, not far from the border with the Netherlands. A relatively short track at just a shade longer than 4 kilometres, this track will provide a good all-around challenge to the entries, requiring a design with a good balance between handling and straight-line speed.



Imola 6 Hours

Set not far from the heart and soul of the Italian motorsport industry, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari makes the final round of this leg one of the most challenging of the SASC Championship's six-hour sprint races. This track demands good straight-line speed and high-speed handling, to take advantage of the sweeping, high-speed bends, all while the rough surface threatens to upset the handling at the same time.

MONTREAL - CMW won big at the 6 Hours du Montreal this sunny afternoon, with the Turbo 8s finishing three laps ahead of the NEMW Neponsets in the Prototype class. In Group A, CMW took their fourth win of the season, fighting off a late charge from the revitalised Flamarbol GrAs. After a late pit stop, the CMWs were bleeding time to the Flamarbols, the latter setting their fastest laps of the race in the closing hour, while the CMWs were losing up to a second a lap to the scarlet coupes.

VH Racing made it eight class wins on the season in Group C, winning easily over CMW and NEMW, but their day was marred by the #37 suffering yet another engine failure early in the race. CMW was far from trouble-free as well this race, after a first-lap incident where the #11 Flamarbol GrB speared off into the gravel trap in the first corner, having experienced a sudden loss of brake power. As such, NEMW was able to capitalise on CMW's misfortune and secured their fourth podium finish on the season. Rumours flew around the garage, as well as the press boxes, that a small tiger-team of NEMW race engineers were preparing a Group C version of the company's Merrimack sports coupe, which is already enjoying a successful campaign in Group B. These rumours might have some weight behind them, as there are reports in recent days of a heavily camouflaged Merrimack running several laps of the New England company's test track at a pace far too great to be just a simple revision of the Group B car. Additionally, a "clarification of Section 5 of the SASC Rules" was requested by NEMW during the break between the second and third legs of the championship; this section of the rules pertains to how entries into the SASC Championship are allowed to be revised.

Flamarbol won Group B once again, that team notching their ninth win and sixth 1-2 finish of the season over NEMW, their revised GrB making its debut here in Canada. NEMW rounded out the podium, with both Merrimack GT-Rs running a clean, uneventful race. Since this is effectively NEMW's home race, the company was out in force all weekend, with hundreds of employees on hand to witness the events, as well as a very large marketing presence here on the island, handing out posters and offering rides in all of NEMW's lineup around the track in between race events. Automurdermotive and LATOY too had a very large marketing presence in Montreal as well, with both brands completely shutting down all three blocks of Crescent Street in downtown Montreal for VIP events all weekend long; the cars did not disappoint on track either, both teams fighting hard for position all race long in Group B.

Group A was, unsurprisingly, very tight again, with six cars finishing the race within a lap of each other, and with Flamarbol mounting a hard charge on CMW in the closing stages of the race as mentioned before. NEMW struggled for speed all afternoon, their car seemingly not at home on the go-fast, go-slow layout of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, finding themselves fighting for position with both Automurdermotives for position several times through the course of the race, at least until a bit of careless driving sidelined the #9 Fiasco with less than an hour to go in the race. This put a big dent in both team's positions over LATOY, who managed to stay clean and fast enough that they were able to make up ground in the Constructor Standings over Automurdermotive, all while keeping the damage to a minimum with last-place NEMW.

REVERSAL - Flamarbol Stumbles, Automurdermotive Rises At Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN - Flamarbol stumbled today at the 12 Hours at the Glen, with both GrBs suffering from an unspecified drivetrain failure. Two hours in, the #11 Flamarbol slowed mysteriously in the Outer Loop, limping back to the pits. The mechanics herded the car into the garage and began tearing into the stricken car. After nearly an hour in the garage, the #11 resumed its race, but it was decided to bring the #12 in for repairs right after, fearing the problem might crop up in that car as well.

With Flamarbol stumbling, NEMW took the win in Group B, the Merrimack winning easily over second and third place Automurdermotive, that team giddy with excitement over their best finish of the season. LATOY as well was able to make the best of the situation, running a clean race to fourth and fifth in class.

Elsewhere, CMW took the top spot overall in the race as the #3 Turbo 8 took that car's fourth win of the season, a lap ahead of their teammates, and four laps up on the sole remaining NEMW, the second Neponset falling to engine failure early in the race.

VH Racing took their ninth win of the year in Group C, winning in a surprisingly exciting race over CMW, with only a lap between the two teams after twelve hours. That said, it was a bittersweet win, as the lead V12 Special succumbed to a race-ending engine failure for the third race in a row. The team is mum about any potential cause, but sources say they are working tirelessly to isolate the root cause.

In Group A, FISH's rollercoaster season continued apace, with the #1 Aluvera winning the class after the #2 retired from the lead with less than half an hour remaining. CMW too fell to a similar fate, the #83 976 coming in a very close second place, while the #84 crashed hard in the tenth hour, spending half an hour in the garage as the team scrambled to sawzall and tape down any errant bodywork. Flamarbol rounded out the podium in Group A, finishing third and fourth in class only a minute behind the remaining CMW. NEMW and Automurdermotive drove tremendously good races as well, fighting hard with one another for the first half of the race and finishing only a few laps off the pace in the end, with LATOY rounding out the top ten, that team's reliability once again propelling it along in the Constructor Championship.

I thought about a customer chassis/motor program for this series, but I wasn't able to come up with anything I liked. Until now, when it's become glaringly obvious how to do it, by simply transferring a set amount of revision points from one entrant to another.

GREEN HELL - NEMW, LATOY Shine At "Brutal" Nurburgring

NURBURG - The Nordschleife lived up to its reputation yesterday for the thirteenth round of the SASC Championship. Even under nearly ideal weather conditions, every car and driver was tested up to and beyond the breaking point, with only thirteen of thirty cars running a clean race. The first lap of the race was marred by a huge wreck at Ex-Muhle, involving one car from each Group C team, as well as the #84 CMW Group A car. Fortunately, none of the drivers involved were injured, but the accident effectively ended the race for all three of the affected Group C cars. In that class, the remaining VH Racing V12 Special fought off the remaining CMW 976 for the first third of the race, where the CMW's thirst started to catch up to it, spending more and more time in the pits as the VH did not. The third-place NEMW Assabet suffered a drivetrain failure late overnight, needing well over an hour in the garage to correct the fault; credit is due to NEMW's mechanics, who worked at frenetic pace to repair the car, sensing blood in the water as the rest of the class faltered.

NEMW's strong day also continued in the Prototype class, with the #6 Neponset cruising to a relatively easy victory in class over the #3 CMW, taking the overall victory at the same time. Both CMW and NEMW's sister cars suffered problems and accidents as well, finishing well back in the field.

In Group B, Flamarbol notched their tenth win of the season, that team being the only team in the entire field that ran a completely clean and uneventful race. However, it was LATOY and their RM2000s that shocked and delighted the crowd of almost 350,000 attending the race, the plucky Finnish team marking their first podium finish of the season; with the #16 following shortly behind in fourth place in class. Automurdermotive kept their cool as well, in spite of the #89 Fiasco Furiouso needing cosmetic surgery following an off in the third hour, that team finishing in fifth and sixth in class. NEMW, for all the strength of their top two teams, did not have a good race otherwise, with both Hoosic SE-Rs failing to complete the requisite distance, and the lead Merrimack GT-R suffering an engine failure very early in the race.

In Group A, FISH dominated the field to win, the Aluvera being the only car in the class that was able to lap under the 8-minute mark. The remaining CMW in contention finished a full lap behind, with the two Flamarbols another half a lap behind in third and fourth place. In spite of the win, FISH was not so lucky, as the race-leading #1 Aluvera experienced a spectacular engine failure at maximum speed down the Dottinger-Hohe straight, that car spewing flame, smoke and broken bits of engine over an entire kilometre of the track. the #8 Automurdermotive came in fifth after a smooth and clean race, with the two LATOYs in sixth and seventh, being the last cars on the track that did not experience any significant issues all race. NEMW, as mentioned, had a race to forget in Group A, with the lead Hoosic's race ending not even an hour in with an engine failure, and the second car suffering from serious suspension issues all race, one of which was serious enough to keep the car in the garage for almost seven hours in one stretch.

With the Nurburgring marking the exact halfway point in the SASC Championship, we find all of the classes are tightening up dramatically; in the case of the Prototypes and Group C, we find the points leaders sitting only one retirement away from losing their positions atop the leader board, and in Group A it is still very much a three-way battle for the top spot, with CMW, Flamarbol and FISH all within a couple of hundred points of each other.

In what has become something of a team tradation, Flamarbol has revealed a series of revisions to their racing range mid-week. Too early to have an effect and with plenty of time for their competitors to review and adjust accordingly. Team Spokesperson Allegra Felix was quoted as saying "those clowns? forget about them, they couldn't read a technical document if it was drawn in crayon". Hubris indeed. The revised Group A entry has an entire new engine family nicknamed the "A4". According to engineering sources close to the team it "explodes off the line before employing a ballistic tragectory towards the target.. oh wait which project are we talking about?" Rumors abound that the team is using experimental fuels the achieve the unheard of power numbers for the class, not to mention the gossip surrounding the so called "Schwarzgerät Device" which appears the key to the whole puzzle.

The Group B team has decided to shun the new engine development in favour of minor tweaks to the entry, citing irreconcilable differences with the turbine implemenation on the new "A4". Our own technical team are suggesting this is an oddity given the extensive background the "A4" engineers have with turbine development and believe that the issue may lie in longevity rathe than power output. They cite a series of rather large and alarming explosions from the Flamarbol team testing base in Peenemünde, explosions which can only be attributed to overpressure incidents. Further to this, Group B engineers were spotting luncheoning at the local Casino, toasting loudly "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" It seems the hubris extends team wide.

How the secretive Mandala financing bodythat backs the Flamarbol the team takes these changes remains to be seen. They have been demanding class leading performance in Group A the whole season with no results and yet seem to be pushing the Group B team further and further despite a string of 1-2 finishes.

Mr Chips I now have two different engine families - if this causes issues please let me know! If this is illegal, well the Mandala Group will be very disappointed.

I'm pretty certain being the onboard camera cars of Eurosport has helped us quite a bit on keeping us this lucky. I ain't complaining because we got a good shot of that first lap mishap and a podium too.

Yeah, my car has an absurdly small fuel tank simply because it is so small. I don't have your number on hand, but I can tell you that my car is something like 65 kilograms.

TO THE WIRE - Flamarbol, CMW Win Thrilling But Delayed Race In Belgium

ZOLDER - The action today at Circuit Zolder was worth the wait for fans, the race being delayed by multiple protests both on and off the track. A major environmentalist group blockaded the entrance as fans were trying to arrive, protesting one of the series' major sponsors and their involvement in the enormous oil spill in Alaska. As the grid lined up, another protest began on the track as a group stormed the track, angrily protesting the events in Beijing earlier in the summer. Finally, after almost two hours of delay, the race began, and did not disappoint.

CMW and VH Racing ran a wildly competitive race, trading spots and the class lead all race long; it was very much in doubt whether or not the CMWs would be able to hold off the V12 Specials in the closing laps, but in the end they just held out for the win. Had the race even been ten minutes longer, the CMWs would have needed another fuel stop, which would have relinquished their lead. NEMW had a reasonably strong race too, in spite of the Assabet program winding down after Imola.

In the Prototype class, engine failure was the name of the game, with only the #6 Neponset running past the halfway mark. CMW was particularly unlucky, with both of their cars retiring barely more than ten minutes into the race. When asked about their tremendous misfortune, CMW team officials were rather sanguine, seeing as these were the first retirements of the new Turbo 8-powered prototypes; it seems as though they were able to determine the root cause of the failures even before leaving the track this afternoon.


In Group B, Flamarbol won another hard-fought battle with NEMW, their Merrimack GT-Rs loving this style of track. In the end, the endurance and reliability of the Merrimack was not the equal of the Flamarbol, with a lap between the two teams at the end of the race. Automurdermotive and LATOY both acquitted themselves well again, fighting a surprisingly competitive race between them for position for the first half of the race.

Group A was, as has been par for the course, very hotly contested. Flamarbol, CMW and FISH all turned in tremendous performances, and with the rumoured team order at CMW is allowing their drivers to race one another , has only make Group A even more exciting, with the class victory coming down to a drag race out of the last corner and to the finish line. Flamarbol was not far behind, with FISH and a surprisingly fast NEMW duking it out only a couple of laps behind the lead. With their 1-2 finish, CMW gets a little breathing room in the Constructor Championship over Flamarbol, but with eleven races left in the season, 108 points is basically nothing - expect the battle to continue to heat up.

ITALIAN JOB - CMW Wins Overall, FISH Dominates Group A At Sizzling Imola

IMOLA - FISH dominated their rivals this afternoon at the 6 Hours of Imola, in the first of three races the company proudly proclaimed was their "homecoming tour". The stands and the hillsides were packed with the boisterous supporters of the team, decked out in green and waving the banners of the Hispano-Italian manufacturer's logo. After the race, the gleeful fans joyously stormed the track by the thousands, celebrating with the customary road flares and noisemakers that have become so synonymous with the so-called "tifosi verdi". Further back in Group A, the battle for position was nearly as fierce as the late-summer Italian sun, with CMW and Flamarbol going wheel-to-wheel nearly all race long. In spite of some minor contact, the racing was clean by and large, but in the end the two scarlet Flarmarbols prevailed over their rivals, finishing third and fourth in class within sight of each other. CMW was also involved in a little bit of controversy; during the opening lap an aggressive blocking maneuver going down the hill into the Acque Minerale chicane caused the car to spin and triggered a large accident that damaged the #8 Automurdermotive and the #18 LATOY, both cars rejoining the race after lengthy spells in the garage to clean up the mangled bodywork on both.

In Group B, the rough track took a toll on all the competitors in this class, with the #12 Flamarbol GrB going out in the fourth hour with an engine failure through Tamburello (likely caused by a massive over-rev when the rear wheels both went airborne for a fraction of a second over a large bump), and the #53 NEMW Merrimack, which found the wall following a massive suspension failure heading down the hill into Rivazza. The two remaining cars made up for their teammate's misfortunes, with the #11 Flamarbol notching that car's first win of the season, and the #52 Merrimack bringing it home in second place. Automurdermotive took their fourth podium finish of the season, with LATOY not far behind in fourth place.

VH Racing and CMW fought yet another classic battle between them, with the faster CMWs once again proving to be hobbled somewhat by their fuel tank size. Combined with the hot conditions and fast track layout, the CMWs both needed to stop late in the race, the team watching in frustration from the pits as both V12 Specials sailed past to take, and ultimately hold, the lead in class. After a largely disappointing campaign, NEMW bid farewell to the Assabet GT-R in Group C, with their replacement set to debut at the next race in Monza. Rumours have been flying around the garages even before the New England-based manufacturer acknowledged the program, and after a very secretive development program, we will finally see the results of their work.

SASC Week 4 Preview

The fourth leg of the SASC Championship incorporates the last four European races of the series, visiting some of the most historic racing circuits on the continent as summer gives way to autumn in what is proving to be a historic year both on and off the track. The final round of this leg marks the second-to-last stop in the Americas as well, with the series shifting gears toward areas where the weather is fair in the last leg of the series.


(note that we will be running a revised version of the current layout, with the old-style chicanes instead of the current Turn 1-2 complex)

6 Hours of Monza

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is one of the fastest tracks in the SASC Championship, with average speeds expected to be second only to Le Mans. High-speeds, along with fast, sweeping corners favours cars with good aerodynamics and lots of horsepower.



6 Hours of Jerez

Circuito de Jerez is the newest track in the Championship, having opened up just four years prior. Set in the sunny and hot south of Spain, this track combines large elevation changes with many low and medium-speed corners. It should shake things up somewhat from the fast, high-speed circuits that have dominated the series thus far.


(Note - we will be running the original layout in grey at Zandvoort; 1989 would have been the last year this would have been possible)

Zandvoort 6 Hours

The SASC Championship heads north for the last time, to the Dutch coast for what will likely be a cool and blustery race. Circuit Park Zandvoort is built over a series of sand dunes right on the coast, which makes for very abrupt but small elevation changes throughout the track. The poor soil as well has made the track surface extremely rough and choppy in places, so cars with very tame handling will excel here, as they will be less prone to upset over the bumps.


(Note - we will be running a period-authentic layout, with the smaller Bus Stop chicane)

Spa 24 Hours

The final European round of SASC heads to the mountains of eastern Belgium and to Circuit Spa-Francorchamps, a track where the layout and the weather alike will challenge drivers and cars in what could be one of the most pivotal races of the entire season - a bad or unlucky race here could effectively end a team's hopes of winning the Constructor Championship.



Road Atlanta 10 Hours

SASC returns to America for the last of two rounds there, with the unique ten-hour race at Road Atlanta, an hour's drive northeast of Atlanta in the small town of Braselton. This track has a mix of corners of all speeds, elevation changes and a mix of both long and short straights to provide what should be one of the best all-round tests of a car's performance.

LA-JOYOUS - LATOY Wins At Rainy Monza

MONZA - With cool heads, savvy pit strategy and more than a little luck, LATOY made the impossible reality this afternoon at Monza, sweeping the top two steps of the podium in Group B. While the team was quietly confident going into the race, their decisive victory today caught everyone by surprise. Cool, rainy conditions all week long made for a challenging track, and the misty dampness that shrouded the track for the first half of the race only played into their hands even more. As a gentle rain started to fall in the fourth hour, LATOY pushed on, watching their rivals struggle in the wet as they continued to open up more and more of a lead as the race progressed, finishing a full lap up on the third-place NEMW Merrimack GT-R, and two laps ahead of the class-leading #12 Flamarbol GrB. Spirits were high for the podium celebration, with fans madly waving Finnish flags and blowing their customary air horns, a holdover from the country's proud rally traditions.

The slick conditions played havoc with a number of cars, as both Flamarbol teams lost a car each to engine failure after they over-revved having found patches of standing water on the track. In spite of the setback, Flamarbol is very pleased with the debut of their all-new engine in the Group A car, with horsepower up substantially over the original engine. CMW as well debuted a new variant of their seemingly endlessly flexible B52 powerplant, the new engine in the much-improved 976 3.9R rumoured to be much more fuel efficient and more powerful than the original 3.5-litre engine that debuted in the car at the beginning of the season. CMW also brought and ran two heavily camouflaged 990s in the pre-race festivities, one of them a road car and the other the 990 GT race car, the latter making its first public appearance here ahead of the new model's debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. FISH had a challenging race, with the #1 Aluvera fighting hard with the two CMWs and the remaining Flamarbol in a very exciting battle for position in the closing stages of the race. Automurdermotive and LATOY ran a clean and hard-fought race, but the little blue Finnish hatchbacks could not match the Fiasco's pace in the end. NEMW had a race to forget, with both Hoosic SE-Rs struggling with suspension failures, one of which ended the #55 car's race.

Group C was marred by a massive accident on the first lap, with one car from each team getting tangled up with one another in the first chicane. None of the cars were heavily damaged, but it took a couple of caution laps to get everything sorted out before the race could continue. In the end, CMW won the race fairly easily, as all of their rivals (and their teammates alike) found themselves in the garage for repairs. NEMW, debuting their much-awaited new Group C car, stunned everyone when it was revealed to be a Hoosic compact sports coupe, rather than the newer and larger Merrimack GT car. It was, unfortunately, not an easy debut for the car, as both cars were involved in accidents early, and the #50's race ended in a cloud of smoke just past the halfway point. Still, teething troubles are to be expected with a new model, and the team is confident they can work out most of the problems before the final leg of the season.

I swear I put lights and door handles on my Group A :rolleyes: A disappointing round for me, tempered by my first reasonable performance in Group A. I put a lot of effort into that revised motor. I was hoping to make it work for my Group B entry but the fuelling requirements were too strenuous (I got drunk)

I gotta say, I'm surprised by this result since I wasn't expecting their cars to struggle in these conditions this hard. You could see it quite clearly in the Ascari, since a lot of cars struggled to get the power down or to retain speed in there.

Every week I say to myself "Submit a revision" every week I actually go to do it I've been sick as crap and leave it alone for fear of screwing it all up.

RAIN DANCE - CMW, Flamarbol Sweep As Rain Falls In Spain

JEREZ - CMW and Flamarbol took two class wins apiece this afternoon in Jerez, with the Flamarbols taking the lower classes and the CMWs taking the top two on this unusually cool, wet afternoon. The rains held off for the start, but by the second hour a soaking, gentle rain started, lasting for a couple of hours until it tapered off to just a misty drizzle. This played havoc with pit strategies, as the track went from dry to fully wet and back twice over the six-hour race.

This played well into the hands of NEMW's Group B team, their smart strategy combined with their car's relatively long range allowed them to keep pressure on Flamarbol all race long, needing three fewer pit stops than their Australian rivals. Even CMW's Group C team, long maligned by their rivals as being able to "pass everything but a fuel stop", managed one fewer stop than Victorian Hooray on the race, proving to be a substantial part of the #61 car's margin of victory. The #62 CMW was not so lucky, suffering a massive suspension failure after the car spun off the track on a wet patch.

Flamarbol too suffered some adversity, as the class-leading #20 GrA spun off the track, smashing hard enough that it ended their race. FISH struggled this afternoon, the tight, twisting layout of the track not really suiting their car. The team is hopeful that they will rebound somewhat on the faster circuits that follow in this leg. NEMW, apart from the Prototypes and the Group B team, struggled as well, the Group C Hoosic GT-Rs having another difficult race with yet more teething troubles. Still, the team is confident they can turn things around for the final leg of the season.

Elsewhere, LATOY and Automurdermotive engaged in what was likely the battle of the race, with the TM2000s and the V12 Fiascos fighting tooth and nail for seventh place in Group A. The sight of the blue LATOYs and the bright green Fiascos sliding sideways out of the corners as they fought for position bolstered the spirits of the crowd as the rain fell.

ERG WARM - CMW, Flamarbol Win, FISH Narrowly Misses In A Thrilling Race At Zandvoort

ZANDVOORT - CMW and Flamarbol continued their storybook racing seasons, the teams repeating the success in Spain as they split all four class wins between them. However, that is not to say it was by any means easy - both winning CMW and Flamarbol teams were pressured hard all race long by their rivals. The race started under partly cloudy and unusually warm and humid conditions, but as the race progressed the cloud dissipated and the temperatures rose dramatically, with the track temperature pushing 40 degrees as the chequered flag dropped. The still air, combined with high humidity made for a spectacular show, with white streamers spilling off the wings of the prototypes as they sped around the challenging and fast circuit.

In Group C, VH Racing and CMW fought a classic battle, their cars so evenly matched that there was less than fifteen seconds between the first place #62 CMW and the third place #37 V12 Special. The tension in the pit lane was palpable, as neither team wanted to move before the other; as CMW pitted for hard tires, so did VH - as VH made routine stops, so too did CMW. Unfortunately for CMW, this four-way battle became a three-way battle, as the #61 976 suffered a front splitter failure over one of the larger bumps in the brutally rough track surface. NEMW's struggles continued with the Hoosic GT-R, that car seemingly struggling to put the power its monster V8 produced to the slippery, sandy pavement. Struggle as they do, NEMW worked tirelessly gathering data from their cars, as rumours have it they are already hard at work on their entries for the 1990 season.

In Group B, on the other hand, NEMW was only a pitstop miscue away from pipping Flamarbol - during the second hour, the lead #52 Merrimack suffered a suspension failure and was limped back to the pits for repairs. Instead of bringing the car back into the garage, the team opted to repair the car in the pit box, hoping they could clear it out before the second-place #53 was due for a routine stop. Unfortunately, this did not play out and the #53 sat unattended for almost two minutes beyond the series-mandated one minute long pitstop. Automurdermotive's Group B team turned in an unexpectedly strong performance today as well, capitalising on the stricken NEMW and finishing in fourth place in class, gaining a little ground in the Constructor Standings over their rivals.

Group A once again proved to be just as thrilling as any other race this season, with the racing between the CMWs, Flamarbols and FISHs resembling a touring car race rather than an endurance race. Even as Flamarbol pulled away from their rivals, CMW and FISH fought wheel-to-wheel for third place, and after the race-leading Flamarbol retired to the garage in the fourth hour for repairs to a bad fuel pump, for second place thereafter. FISH was just able to pip CMW for the last two spots on the podium in the end, finishing just 40 seconds ahead of the championship-leading team. As mentioned, Flamarbol struggled again with reliability at this race; ever since their new engine debuted at Monza, the GrA has shown incredible speed, as their car is thought to have by far the best power-to-weight ratio in the class. While it is difficult to place exactly how much power they have, estimates are that the new engine is producing, in the words of a rival race engineer, "at least 350 horsepower, possibly more". Coupled with a car that is just barely over the minimum weight of 900 kilograms and you have the recipe for a very competitive race car indeed. CMW also debuted a revised car at the Monza race as well, with a larger engine and a revised chassis, but will it be enough to hold on to their 143-point lead in the Constructor Championship?

It IS the main attraction here. Shame more people didn't enter because I wanted to see the prototypes and C class more populated.
