That goal was great. If just 1 Pies player was between the mark and the goal line they would have stopped it.

Two great games in a row. Pity the gap between them was so long otherwise I'd have stayed at the ground to watch the second match.

The highlight reel is basically just the second half in real time.

Excited for round 3, although nervous about going up against the crows over there.

Seems like they had a capacity crowd of 10,000. Not sure if it was a lockout or not. I think the Coll-Melb crowd was a bit weak given it is two melbourne based teams. Get your poo poo together fans, Saturday night game, where were you?

This round of AFLW also had a higher average attendance of the current A-league round and the W-League grand final tonight had a crowd of 4,591.

Nice, but is Tayla Harris a rising star? Sure, she meets the age criteria but she was a marquee player and played a bunch of the exhibition games, not sure if she should count.

Edit: A few season ending injuries this week too. Meg Downie and Stephanie de-bortoli for Melbourne and Kim Mickle for Fremantle.

I expect my commemorative drought breaking premiership memorabilia in the mail by Tuesday Gil.

They breached the salary cap from 1991-1996 which makes 1993 the only year a premiership side has breached the salary cap. It is also partially why Carlton got royally hosed in 2002, the AFL wanted to stop teams doing it, as more than half the teams had been breaching the salary cap in the late 90s.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/lists-too-small-strains-surfacing--clubs-push-for-more-aflw-players-20170216-guepb2.html

quote:

A club push for AFLW lists to expand – one side has proposed jumping from 27 to 40 – comes with the current cap proving problematic just two weeks into season one.

The growing tally of season-ending injuries is creating genuine concern, and varying degrees of strain, across the new eight-club competition.

Some coaches and players are already convinced the AFL's mandated limit of 27 female footballers per club is way too small and must be changed as a matter of priority for year two.

Carlton, Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney have all been forced to use the 'top-up' system which, under current rules, is only permitted when clubs cannot fill a team sheet.

It is a remarkable scenario when compared to the weekly running of AFL men's sides, which have lists of 45 and name 22 players for premiership season games like in the AFLW.

Angst over the women's list cap – each club began with 27 players, including two rookies, and can bring in 'top-up' players if the number of fit footballers drops below 24 – is materialising as some feared.

Also, this was the banner for the blues, pity about the result of the game.

The green squares and oval are where the Australian Open was last month. I hear there are some solid games of "footy" down there for the opening rounds of Australian Rules Football this month too. That's the weird type of Rugby that was influenced by basketball… I need to look more into it ;) Congratulations to the brand new Women's League!

FREMANTLE has been fined $10,000 by the AFL for wearing the wrong uniform in its NAB AFL Women’s match against Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown last weekend.

The Dockers wore their away strip (predominantly white jumper and white shorts) instead of the predominantly all-purple combination they were directed to wear by the AFL in a dossier issued to teams last week.

The all-white outfit clashed with the Giants’ mainly all-white uniform, especially from behind (both jumpers have white backs).

At quarter-time, the Giants changed into charcoal-coloured shorts after a staff member collected them from the club’s Homebush base.

On Monday afternoon the Dockers apologised for the uniform breach and conceded they had made an operational error.

The AFL said half the fine would be suspended.

$5000 fine, a bit harsh but yeah, that first quarter was pretty drat confusing for everyone. I'm surprised they don't take both the normal and away strips to all games. It is only an extra bag for all the extras and then you can do promo things at the ground with the normal colours.

Good contest so far at half time. Carlton dominating the inside 50s but still a goal down.

First quarter was quiet but a while bunch hof goals kicked in the second.

Seems like a pretty good crowd out past the edge of civilization too.

Edit: Goes both ways. Heaps of push in the backs and high contact going uncalled. Hopefully next season they enforce the rules, now the women know what it is like to play games they can tighten it up.

They need to bring in stopping the clock next season and then also tighten up what is called by umps. So many throws, high tackles and incorrect disposals are called as playon. Tighten up the umpiring so the players don't learn to play incorrectly for the future. Let season 1 be the 'taste test' so everyone is used to it and from next year onwards play the game properly.

No expansion next year, 2019 at the earliest they came out and said the other week. But it could be two new teams at once, who knows.

Cats, North, Tigers, St Kilda and the Eagles have all have provisional licenses. I think Eagles are a lock in for one of the next two, that way they can hype up the local derby, probably Cats too, get games down at Gtown.

AFLW games to remain free in 2018. They want to build up a supporter base first. Makes sense and it doesn't cost the AFL much at all to run this competition (each clubs playing list is paid ~$300k and then costs of staff and facilities ontop of that isn't too much either)
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-03-01/aflw-to-remain-free-of-charge-in-2018?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Just hope they have 2 FTA games a week next year. And in 2019 when 1 or two more clubs join the competition it'll start to pick up steam with more supporters of existing clubs brought into the fold.
