So, I have Space Adventure Cobra and Space Pirate Harlock to watch, but I figure I should drop a line if there's any other good references for old sci-fi anime based around an ridiculously competent marquee hero. How's that for ridiculously specific? Well, two out of three would be fine, too.

Actually, in the parallel almost-same universe as the original Harlock, try Cosmo Warrior Zero. It features a captain of similar honor tasked with hunting Harlock down, while helping his diverse crew (staffed with humans and robots who invaded and won Earth) get along while he himself is still getting over the death of his wife and daughter at the hands of these forces.

"That sounds like a bunch of spoilers, TheSoundNinja!"

Nah, that's just the first two episodes out of 13.

Also, the ship he's in has a huge laser called...

I agree that it is a really good fit. If I had been assigned giant robots I'd do something similar (probably not pbta though, I don't have a good enough grasp on some of the details to be making my own designs using it right now).

As for me... still no progress, but I'm leaning towards a more cops game lately. Although with my current state of mind, it would be next to impossible to actually have 'fun' playing any game focused around police that I build.

That's one of the things I like Mad Bill 34 for - everything in it is so over-the-top that it makes Law and Order look like Sesame Street.

However, there is something to be said for cop tropes. And high school student council run discipline department could be fun...

Or moderators in an MMO

Or paladins (in a fantasy world) who are a part of the order of Justitia, who detain bad guys and solve crimes FOR JUSTICE, DAMNIT!

Either way, if this genre doesn't work, that's fine. The cut-off is one day after the first person claims the mystery box. At that point, I'll be requiring some sort of fanfic-hazing to swap to the for now "mystery" ""genre"". Final genres are locked in when the modifier is revealed (as design has to begin by then).

Kwyndig: Retire your genre, and give it a nice pension.

You open the box, only to find an already guessed on anime genre:

FOOD! (and / or COOKING!)

EDIT: Alright, you got it! Anyone who has expressed serious concerns with their genre previously in this thread has 24 hours to declare they want the mystery box.

So, to repeat: the Mystery Box is Food and / or Cooking! If you've already mentioned serious concerns in the thread over whether or not the genre you drew will result in a game that fulfills it, you are eligible to claim the Mystery Box instead.

If you haven't mentioned that yet, you will not be able to claim the Mystery Box.

I might be screwing myself since the modifier hasn't been added, but I've already started building my game. It uses what I assume to be an original system so far. It's odd, though. Like, really weird. It probably will suck to when its complete, but I suppose we shall see.

Alright, after the fiasco that was my concept for an RPG based on The Police (it's a bit of design I'd like to reapproach in the future, but it's design concepts at the moment are well beyond my ability to forge into a cohesive whole) so I'm looking to make something a little more straightforward (given my familiarity with Anime versus The Police songs). Count me in.

As a note though, I won't be able to playtest someone else's game because my group does not have a consistent weekly or even monthly meeting. I can try to schedule something now to try to address it in advance, but I'm not confident I can find a place in my group's schedule when I only have one weekend to playtest it. If this passes the buck in an unacceptable way, let me know and I'm happy to back out now.

So, having your game be playtested is a requirement. I would prefer you playtest someone's game (as that would help them out), so do schedule something. I am willing to accept having someone else take care of playtesting someone else's game in your stead if push came to shove, but you would need to put in the work to make that a possibility. The person who playtests for you would need to get you their feedback on the game as it stands in time for you to upload their findings as a post here in time for the deadline.

I think that can work as a compromise. What do you guys think?

Given how many people are participating in the contest and the various goon IRCs for pbp out there--I can't imagine it will be too hard to find people willing to kill some time on a few quick games. However--I could foresee like, a GENERAL extension for entries due to the volume. Even if there's people willing (and a lot of people in the contest) there's likely going to be a lot of people doubling up inside and outside the contest group in order to make sure everyone gets a playtest and that's quite a few hours.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I might be able to rely upon strangers rather than a dedicated group and either take advantage of a goon #irc RPG channel or see if my FLGS is willing to host/sponsor the playtest. Wouldn't need to impinge on anyone's schedule but my own.

Hmm....what to do...what to do. Period Piece contains such a great number of themes and possible periods...from earliest Rice Kingdom Wars and Chinese Socialisation, to the Sengoku Jidai, the Edo Period, the Rise of Noh, the historical End of the Bakufu and the accompanying wars, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904...(a very undertreated historic moment), the way into quasi-fascist authoritarian imperialism and the reopening of the country....AND I really like murder-hobo style gaming....

Hmmm. Difficult. Difficult. Iīm unsure, currently between three choices, either End of Sengoku Jidai, say 1610, the country hasnīt yet closed off and sends explorers, adventurers and delegations into all corners of the world, play one of the intrepid people and explore the wacky hijinks that can appear from misunderstandings and cultural differences, or the terror that is the fight on the losing side of the Boshin war, romanticizing a conflict that wasnīt really as bloody nor as big as everyone nowadays stylizes it to be, or opening up a Noh Theatre and the problems inherent in setting up a better play, staging a great performance or simply outperforming your rivals by poisoning their makeup...decisions....decisions....I could also go for something set in the Edo Period, only instead of playing samurai the players are pushed into the role of christian peasants (Early Edo Period, I know...), forced to decide between giving up an alien faith or fighting on losing ground...or....or...or....wow thereīs a lot of stuff here!

I'll probably end up leaning harder on transhumanism either way, but at least I have a starting point.
