What is this game and why should I play it?

Marvel Heroes is an ARPG with an MMO style multiplayer focus, set in the Marvel universe. It pulls content from Marvel's entire range of characters (including X-Men and Fantastic Four, which other games aren't allowed to use anymore) and has tons of content. The game is Free To Play and it's one of the few titles where that's really true: no content is ever paywalled, all characters can be earned for free, and the cash shop is mostly costumes and storage space just in case you need to hoard gear you'll never end up equipping (and some experience potions to shortcut your way to max level).

This game has almost 60 playable characters. Good god almighty.

In short: It's fun, it has cool characters, it's multiplayer, and there's a lot of stuff to do. And it's free.

How do I get started?

The game wants you to choose a 'starting' hero. You're not locked into this choice. Pick anyone from that list, and then once you're properly in-game, you can try out any character in the game until lv10 for free. Once you find someone you like, you can fully unlock your first hero for free. On the second day of playing the game, you'll be given some currency (called Eternity Splinters) you can use to buy one or two more heroes for free. So you get anyone you want to start, and you'll already start building your roster pretty quickly.

So try out anyone you think seems cool, and unlock someone you think you'll enjoy.

After your free heroes, you need Eternity Splinters to unlock further ones. You get these as drops from anywhere in the game, at a rate of one drop every five to eight minutes or so. A single 'drop' can range between one to ten Eternity Splinters, and sometimes even higher, so it's not too annoying to do. Since it happens while you do basically anything in the game, you never have to go do boring stuff to grind currency. You'll always be getting more.

The goon recommended heroes showcase a good range of special mechanics as well as covering a range of playstyles. At this juncture, every character is viable in the endgame though.

What are Team-Ups?

A Team-Up is a customizable AI partner who fights alongside you and has their own gear and skills. There's stuff like this in other ARPGs so you might be able to guess how they work. Team-Ups are a separate, secondary roster available to you on any hero. You can use any level hero with any level team-up, and they're never locked together, so if you want you can use the same team-up on every character you own. Or you can give everyone a different one.

While Team-Up characters can be set to a 'passive' mode where they're not summoned and you gain stat bonuses instead, it's recommended that you keep them in their 'always around' mode, called Active, where they can do the most damage and even tank for you a bit to increase survivability.

You get a free generic SHIELD Agent team-up from playing through the story so make sure you pick him up. There are some cool team-up heroes though, so don't be afraid to pick up some extra ones. You can buy them with Eternity Splinters just like you do new heroes.

Where do I go? What do I do?

First of all, play through the story. You need to do this at least once, and odds are you're going to be at least running portions of it on every character to get bonus power points and other permanent stat increases. But it's very important to beat the full story mode at least once to unlock all the waypoints and things like your free team-up. The story is designed to take you from lv1 to lv60, so you'll be ready for some endgame stuff once you're done. There's even some missions that will reward Story Reward boxes - they can take a little grinding, but these will always contain at least one Eternity Splinter toward your next hero!

After beating the story you can:

- Raid: Yes, that's right, this game has raiding. Groups of 10 players work together to beat a series of bosses and get fancy loot. Joining the Supergroup will help you do successful raids more than just jumping into pubbie ones, but even a bunch of undergeared idiots should be able to handle the first entry-level raid without much trouble.

- Group Challenges: There's a bunch of different ones of these things now, but they basically are all built around 5 person groups(except for Holosim, which is for 2 players max) tackling a challenge together for a big pile of rewards at the end.

- Patrol Zones: Run around a big open zone with infinitely spawning enemies and regularly spawning boss waves. Team up with people or don't. Either way it's pretty fun. There are 'Cosmic' versions of these targeted at well-geared max level players that offer a good challenge and better loot.

- PvP: hahaha just kidding you can't pvp because nobody queues for it

- Do it again: Seriously. You even get a differently coloured name to prove how insane you are.

Playing With Goons

In-game our supergroup is named Groot Force. Unless it's named something else as a serious joke or whatever.

Groot Force tries to be a friendly place for everyone, so if you're used to spouting crazy racist stuff or whatever just try to reel it in and be a respectable member of society for a while so people can play their superhero game without feeling uncomfortable.

Discord: You can talk to goons here: https://discord.gg/0auDYc8nzskkF0W2

If you need an invite to the supergroup, to be honest, the easiest way is to post your in game name in this thread and an officer will invite you.

F.A.Q.

Q: How do I get gear I can use if there's over 50 different classes?
A: Gear is weighted towards your current character. 90% of what you find is going to be for you, 10% or less is going to be for other characters.

Q: Where are the builds? I need guidance in all aspects of my life.
A: There are almost 60 characters in the game and we just had a full overhaul of how they all work, so experiment! ICR update this part later with a link to builds.

Q: What's the cash-to-cash-shop currency conversion?
A: $1 USD = 100G. Pretty simple. So if something costs 900G, then it basically costs $9. However, you get more Gs if you buy larger bundles, and there are occasional discounted G sales, so you can get them for less than the 'standard' rate pretty often.

Q: My inventory is small and I don't want to run around so much. How can I teleport back to the hub for free whenever I want?
A: By default, the B key is your 'Bodyslide' button, which teleports you back to town for selling items or whatever. Pressing this key a second time, while in town, will teleport you back to the exact spot you left, so you never have to lose progress or run through content again if you don't want to. This has a cooldown on it of a few minutes, but you won't really notice it.

Q: Is there trading, auction houses, etc?
A: There's trading, with a big ol' trade economy to go with it. But there are no auction houses and there will probably never be any. I'd suggest you go to the official forums Trading Forums OR make sure you have /trade in your chat browser in game.

I Just Returned To The Game, and I Played When It Was Called Marvel Heroes. And Maybe Marvel Heroes 2015. What Happened?

Well, thankfully, this game went under a major quality of life rework and it's hard to mention everything that has changed. For starters:

- Crafting was simplified. No more dragging and doing obnoxious things.
- Characters have been completely rebuilt and no longer use talent trees stolen from Diablo II, instead you now get all the skills and customise them through a talent tree stolen from World of Warcraft.
- The Omega system has been greatly simplified and is no longer the bastard child of Path of Exile's Passive Skill Tree, but is now Diablo III's Paragon system.
- Lots of new modes: Age of Ultron, Hightown Patrol, Danger Room, etc.
- If anything, If you played about 6 months ago and haven't logged since, you need to log in again. You'll notice the game is much more user friendly than it has ever been.

Special Shoutout to Kelp Plankton. He never scored.

It's probably pretty smart to extend that particular sale now since they'll get a large influx of players who haven't logged in for a long while today.

Chinese New Year is coming up and I was getting the urge to play Diablo 3 but this might suit my ARPG itch again. I did like this game...a year and a half ago.

It took me 8 months to come back to the game after cosmic-ing Rogue and failing to get her back to level 60.

Last time I was taking Doom to Cosmic 60 right when they nerfed the story XP.

Maybe this time around I'll finish off Doom, play a bunch more, find a new character to cosmic then get bored and wander off for another year and a half.

Any insight Heroes who fall under "Don't worry too much about dying without keeping a hand hovering over defense skills", that can still conveniently reach/shoot enemies on the other side of the screen on demand? Or the at least convenient for mixing it up with both melee and ranged toys instead of "I gave my Cyclops one karate chop"

I saw the "Dashes and teleports are now charge based" bit in the OP, so that probably means I cant just nonstop shoulder tackle my way between literally every single enemy like I did with Thing when I first tried out this game ages ago.

A pleasant bonus would be a Hero who does not have the assumption of editing in more hotkeys or using Autohotkey for the player base's expectation of performance. I'm sure I'm overthinking things though, so whatever I end up using once I reinstall should be fine.

Here are my picks for most overhauled heroes post update:

Taskmaster - basically a mini martial power source Rogue now. Narrower in scope, but allows for maybe even greater customization of play style. You can spec into being a combo point hero, you can steal Cap's serum mechanic, you can spec into Elektra's stamina power source instead of spirit. You can grab powers from black widow, spider-man, daredevil, even a couple of heroes who aren't even in the game yet, like Black Knight.

Mr Fantastic - really, all of the fantastic four are really looking good now, but Mr F is so much fun it kills me. Gadgets and stretch powers are both viable as well as hybrid, and you can permanently be in his former signature giant bouncy ball form and it's hilarious and powerful. Specs allow to do crazy stuff like build up to 30 stacks or something equally crazy to power his giant laser beam (formerly that used 3 stacks).

Human Torch - Almost an entirely new hero. Spiritless/mana-less now, he works on an overheat mechanic that is basically pure upside while you have heat. His core kit is still there, but now you have flame tornadoes and screen wide aoes while you laugh maniacally. Having full heat does crazy stuff like just having your spender powers just straight up add another spender at the same time while you channel. Fireballs everywhere.

Storm - Now Spiritless as well! All powers build up your maelstrom gauge which causes huge storm powers to trigger automatically. She received and incredible amount of new and updated art and really feels like a one woman hurricane. You can focus more on lightning or wind and have all of her powers automatically spawn tornadoes or sky splitting columns of lightning independently on top of her maelstrom stuff and screen obscuring sig. feels super powerful and impressive

Some other heroes like Loki and Cyclops have a ton of new powers and play styles open, but I haven't been able to form a real opinion on them yet, but I love the way they look, at least

Super duper excited about the patch. I think I'm gonna prestige Hawkeye and take him through the story again because when I'd come back to play with a friend, I forgot how ridiculously fun to play he was. He's also got the best gear pre-patch of all my 60s, so I might as well. I need to level my team ups for the bonuses anyway, so I'll run about doing that.

It'll be nice to see other peeps online again.

Taskmaster is a fun hybrid hero right now an can be built very tanky. Go combo points with a ranged filler attack and make your cooldowns mostly melee and you can stay at a distance while jumping in and out of melee range.

As far as dashing everywhere, Silver Surfer has actually retained nearly the level of movement he had prepatch and has some pretty absurd healing baked into his kit.
