Out of the houses, which is the most blue?

Did you know:
Michigan touches every Great Lake but Lake Ontario, and Ontario touches every Great Lake but Lake Michigan?

Sault Ste. Marie contains a set of locks called The Soo Locks because much like with Mackinac Island and Bridge vs Mackinaw City, Michiganders can't keep a consistent frigging spelling? They get boats through the difference in height between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

The Great Lakes combine to make up 21% of all fresh water in the world, and are collectively the largest non-frozen source of it? (Lake Baikal in Russia comes close in volume at 20% of all fresh water due to its massive depth)

Lakes Michigan and Huron are technically a single lake?

Please clap share your favorite Great Lakes facts.

There are a number of lake freighters that are too large for the Welland Canal and are thus stuck in the Great Lakes.

Side note: the Wikipedia list of Largest Lakes by area has the Caspian Sea as the world's largest lake. I have no clue why a body of salt water that doesn't even empty into an ocean is being called a lake instead of a sea, especially since Wikipedia also says that the Caspian Sea doesn't even rest entirely on a continental shelf, but there you go.

For me it's Blackout Stout.

Also, they used to stock Lake Erie with Salmon and there are still Salmon in it. P cool, would be good to catch one. There is also a minor league hockey team called the Lake Erie Monsters. Cleveland is also called the 'Mistake on the Lake' by idiots who don't know what a cool city is, sad!

Have fun with these cool facts.

The Mote in God's Eye

The Great Lakes was home to a commercial bass fishing industry until the 1950s, when the population suddenly collapsed and the endemic species went extinct.

Deepest Lakes in Canada:

1. Great Slave Lake* - 614 m [2014 ft]
2. Quesnel Lake - 610 m [2000 ft]
3. Adams Lake - 500 m [1500 ft]
4. Great Bear Lake - 446m [1400 ft]
5. Lake Superior - 404 m [1333 ft]

Indiana had enough clout to get congress to steal part of Michigan so we could have some Great Lake frontage.

The markers have all rotted away so now no one really knows where the border is.

A 1998 NYT/AP article posted:

The move had angered some lawmakers from the Great Lakes states. "If Lake Champlain ends up as a Great Lake, I propose we rename it 'Lake Plain Sham,' " Representative Steven C. LaTourette, an Ohio Republican who is co-chairman of the Congressional Great Lakes Task Force, said recently.

Yeah they weren't too pleased. Vermonters didn't really care that much, and we were only really in it for the increased funding our state universities were able to weasel out of the feds as a consequence.

Why aren't the large lakes in Canada considered "great lakes" as well? They're large, they're lakes, they formed the same way. What's going on?

The Great Slave Lake and the Great Bear Lake are also larger than Lake Erie.

Is this some America #1 USA bullshit?

I've always wanted to walk to Canada when Lake Erie freezes over, but you need $50k/head insurance in case the coast guard needs to helicopter your rear end out of there
