I wonder how you spell Tabasco.

I played the Sly Cooper games in high school. I was crazy about them. When they were rereleased on the PS3, I got all of the trophies. I'm trying to say that I really like criminal animals. My friend recently got a PS2 with the first Sly Cooper game, so I thought I would force him to play through the entire series on my PS3 because I felt bad for him.

I haven't done a Let's Play on SA in nearly two years, so I thought I would crank one out with my friend on the weekends.

I am extremely giddy to start this LP. Sly Cooper is one of my favorite series, and my friend Sean is playing through them blind-ish. He watched me play them a lot when I was in high school, so a few things stuck. He also got a PS2 for Christmas, and it wasn't a joke. He's playing them at home for research/to get an initial feel, and bringing that knowledge back to me, which is good because I haven't played these games in seven years, or whenever the HD collection came out.

One of my favorite things about the Sly series is how it feels coupled with the attitude of the game altogether. You perform awesome feats of acrobatics and stealthiness while being a raccoon with a dweebie turtle talking to you the entire time.

And, because we're insufferable, we made this dumb teaser for the whole series that I promoted on my social sites about a week ago.

Are you going to be 100%ing it?

(I played the first three alot, and 100% 1 and 2. Never beat 3 sadly. Also, are you doing 4?)

It depends on how you define 100%. Getting all of the secret bottles and moves and completing the game gets you close to the platinum trophy. I got all of the trophies originally, so I don't know how I'll know if I'm getting to that point. I remember the time trials in this first game to be impossible, but I may try them when Sean isn't over just to play the game a little myself. The time trials weren't included in the trophy list, thank god. They are in the third game, I think. Dunno. Been a while.

And yeah, I'll work Sly 4 in there. Sean's never seen it, and I've only beaten it once.

Sly, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, silver age of Crash Bandicoot. Developers went into overdrive making cool mascot platformers in the PS2 era.

I think I would find Sly's voice more on the side of cool/calm/collected if it were a bit louder in the game and had a bit more bass to it. It comes across as a little soft-spoken so far, though I really liked his exchange with Carmelita.

I loved playing the first two games as a kid. I enjoyed the first more because you could replay levels and use all the overpowered stuff you unlocked, but then I loaned it to a friend and never got it back so I was stuck with only the second.

I definitely think that Kevin Miller got into the role of Sly a lot more in the sequels. He still stays cool and collected but there is a lot more emotion in his voice in those ones from what I remember.

Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

I think later in the first game there's a move you can unlock which lets you run quite a bit faster that makes time trials possible, I distinctly remember 100%'ing everything. They're still a huge pain near the end though and I don't remember what you get for it anyway so I don't blame you for not bothering. I'm going to have to dust off my copy of Sly 2 and beat the final area, it's only the bottles that stopped me from doing that already.

Wow, after watching that trailer, I can already tell that these are a couple of goofballs.

I have no idea how 4 turned out but I like how much the Sly games improved from game to game. Though, going back to the first one now, that dialogue between Sly and Carmelita sounds super stilted.

  • Infamous, the series.
  • Middle of the industry game development dying, I think.

Now that you mention this, I'm remembering about how muddied Sly 3 was with mini games. Gross.

I was able to do the time trial on the first level, and while it wasn't as hard as I remember, I was surprised with how long it took me. I'll record it and post it before I edit the third episode.

Also, Sean and I recorded again last night, and I'm sitting on a massive amount of content that wouldn't take me long to edit and post. What frequency would you guys like these videos? I could crank them all out shortly after we finish recording, but I don't want to dump. Suggestions? Tips? This is only my second big-boy LP on SA, and with Pikmin 3, I released three videos a week, I think.

I think that was more him not being comfortable with the role in the first game, hence why it became more natural in later games as he became more comfortable.

Absolutely. And by the end of the series he became one of the most well known voices from the PS2 era in my opinion. At the very least his voice was recognizable enough that I noticed it wasn't him in the Sly Movie trailer.

The frequency is up to you. It depends on if you want to just get as many updates out as you can or keep a backlog to put out sparcly but regularly. I keep my LP updates to 1 a week with additional bonus videos throughout the weeks when necessary. I know that keeps me from getting overwhelmed at times.

Honestly, Muggshot is easily one of my favorite baddies in the series and one of the three favorites that are in this game specifically. His backstory is really well animated and his pre and post fight banter is great.

We kick off this episode with a few levels that showcase how little I know about adding video effects in Premiere. It's like you can't even tell that I didn't even go into After Effects. If anybody wants to send me an AE filter(?) or something for fast forwards in the future. I have a lot of editing to do for a future episode, and will take all of the help I can get.

Sean was really concerned that we fast-forwarded through some of the race. There's a funny car with three chihuahuas bobbing their heads to mariachi music, and we passed it.

I said it in the episode, but some of the levels in Mesa City are INCREDIBLE. The flooded casino level is one of my favorites aesthetically, but the Camelita level is also really nicely put together.

Hello yes I heard there was a lovely trainwreck here and...

Raccoons are part of the Procyonidae family which is distinct from Canidae (dogs/wolves) and Ursidae (bears), actually. But all three are part of the same suborder, Caniformia, as opposed to Feliformia, which is the suborder of cats big and small, hyenas, mongooses, and civets. Seals and wolverines are also more closely related to raccoons than cats by that standard. :eng101:

e: Bonus biology facts - pandas are genuine bears, but red pandas are not; they're the only living members of their family. Pandas as we know them today are the only living members of their subfamily though.

The basic enemies of a chapter tend to be influenced by the area itself more than the main villain of the chapter. Raleigh's operation involved heavy amount s of water thus his underlings were all aquatic or amphibious animals.

A bit late for the topic, but the enemies in Raleighs stage were walruses, not beavers.
Also, once you find a blueprint for particular villains world and use binocucoms to look at the mooks, you can see their names.

The original Sly Cooper trilogy is amazing. All 3 games hold up today and I made sure to get 100% on all 3 of 'em. The 4th one I didn't love as much. I don't like the redesigns very much. I dunno what it was beyond that, it was just a bit off-putting to me. So that's the one I didn't bother to get 100% on. Sly, Jak, and Ratchet were like the last of the company mascots and they all kicked rear end (though I never got into Jak like the other two).

Also lil fun fact, in the demo for Sly Cooper, the checkpoints were lil treasure chests that a girl would pop out of and take a picture of Sly. The developers felt that it kinda betrayed the entire idea of stealth, so they became Bentley's flashers.

Technically most of them don't since you see certain ones like Muggshot in later games with the second game's plot being about preventing the resurrection of one of the few bosses who actually was killed off.

Mute the audio, the guy is kinda very annoying. Also worth noting is that Sly mentions busting out a "Climb move" on that ladder. From what I remember (I fastforwarded so hard) as a kid, he said it was the Panda King's move. So at some point Raleigh wasn't even meant to be the first boss.

There are a few levels in this video that contain my most vivid Sly 1 memories. We get off topic a lot in this LP. I blame the booze and the relaxing music in Mz. Ruby's lair.

So I'm not entirely sure when the proper time to bring this up would be. Did anyone see the Sly Movie teaser that came out two or so years ago and what are your thoughts? I was pretty excited for it, despite the voice change for Sly. But I know a lot of people were really put off by it. Specifically Murray's design.

Considering how the R&C movie was received, I doubt the Sly movie's going to happen as it's likely been cancelled by now.

Yeah I looked into it. The poor reception of R&C basically killed the Sly movie. Which is really disappointing.

The problem with R&C movie was that it was the first game rehashed and mixed with Nefarious because Nefarious is awesome, but his inclusion wasn't quite enough to save it.
Sly movie I was hoping to be an original story and avoid the safe, familiar and non-exciting taste of the old plot that we already know.

Mr. Goongala?
70 minutes of Sly running around a level collecting bottles and pickpocketing bad guys. 5 minutes of the audience losing their minds because we all know where the bottle he missed was. 10 minutes of Sly defeating the boss with the special move he just pulled from the safe and a sequel hook where Carmelita chases the gang off into a freeze frame. Roll credits.

I would watch the poo poo out of Sly Cooper: The Animated Series, though. Find and replace old Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? scripts and we're halfway there.

Warmal
Aug 12, 2011

Holy poo poo that'd be super cool. The series definitely fits a series more than a movie. Have a couple episodes per location. A full season having it's overall arc and build-up to the big bad and big heist.
