It was the most painful loss I've ever watched as a Chargers fan. The fact that I had just moved back to California after a long term relationship ended probably didn't help.

Do you think the Chargers would have beaten the Colts?

I dunno. A Patriots offense featuring Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney and the ghost of Troy Brown beat the Chargers. You think the Chargers defense would have been able to handle prime Manning, Harrison, Wayne and Clark?

24 points when you're kind of gifted 7 isn't exactly the worst thing in the world. Plus that San Diego team was pretty well equipped to win a shootout.

And the Pats looked way better offensively against eventual champion Colts, who by the way were the #2 scoring offense that year. To the Chargers.

e: poo poo, 492 to 427 after checking. So the Chargers were the best scoring offense by a full 65 points over the #2 team in the league.

I guess that's nothing compared to what the Pats did the next year but they weren't hatefucking the Redskins and whoever else for petty reasons with the best offense ever. This was a Marty coached team.

The reasons weren't petty. :colbert:

The Chargers never ever had a problem with the Manning Colts.

Yeah, I guess you're right about that - now that I think back to when they did play.

It's pretty amazing to consider how much that stripped ball changed the future of that franchise. Chargers could have gone on to win the Super Bowl. Then there's no way Marty is fired - at least not for a couple of years. And who knows what they could have done with that roster and competent coaching.

Yeah I agree, but people are acting like the Broncos are a total dumpster fire that needs to rebuild.

The Broncos are two years removed from a Super Bowl. They're not the Browns. They still have plenty in place to build around and support Brees and we know Elway wasn't shy about throwing money to land Peyton.

An elite pass rusher? Great cornerbacks? Good receivers?

a neat cape posted:

The Broncos OL is an absolute trash fire, their running game is nothing special, their special teams are really bad, and their defense has given up 100 points in the last two games.

These are all issues that one good off season could fix.

They reality is, if they added Brees and fixed up the OL they would not need that defense to be elite.

I think in retrospect the Raiders were really playing over their heads last season and had a ton of lucky breaks go their way. They still need to plug a lot of holes on the roster and consider replacing players who have not stepped up, and a few who have regressed.

Last year the Raiders had the 5th ranked offense until Carr got hurt and the defense made nice strides after the opening few games disasters(kind of like the Pats defense this year). They did get lucky in one sense, no major injuries until Carr's. This year the already thin defense has been shredded with injuries and the results have been predictable, especially with the new OC also being a bad.

Last year the Raiders won seven games that were one score or less. You can't count on that happening every season.

Mahomes could be great, or at least better than Smith has played the last few weeks. Or he could come out and play like Nathan Peterman and completely sink the Chiefs' playoff chances. I'd imagine that Andy Reid maybe likes his chances of fixing Smith over switching to Mahomes. Just playing devil's advocate.

Apparently Johnson was originally brought in to get the QBs up to speed on the playbook since Gruden wasn't allowed to talk to the players per the CBA, until OTAs.

Ah, as I suspected, all part of Chairman Gruden's glorious and ingenious plan.
