I like hurting others as much as anyone, but what's the point aside from getting an erection? Isn't democracy the real issue here? Why should these people have any kind of power?

Yes, if only we had a means to use violence to deter and enforce a certain set of rules in society and groups of professionals who has worked for hundreds of years learning this strategy.
