Just finished LaD, and I guess I'm going to jail because the ending with the English dub got me all hosed up. Ichiban's VA knocked it out of the goddamn park.

I didn't even know about the Demolish skill until I was literally about to enter the final dungeon, so that was fun.

The only pitch Dead Souls needs is "Yakuza-rear end Substories set in a Zombie Outbreak, several of which involve Majima."

Part of that is that Majima spends the majority of 0 under extreme stress and holding himself back, so a lot of what we see as Yakuza 0 Majima isn't entirely him.

Of course, his Mad Dog personality is also a mask, but one he embraces rather than struggles with, so it's sort of difficult to say either way if we've ever seen "real" Majima for more than a single scene here and there.

But I don't think you need to beat the golf guy, 3 let's you fail substories and they still count for completion/amon. Which I don't like but whatever

This isn't exclusive to 3. 4 and 5 have this as well, and even a few in 0 and Kiwami (for example, having Kiryu totally fall for the Water Scam still counts that substory as "completed" for the sake of your completion list and unlocking Amon, even if you've objectively hosed it up entirely).

Yeah, realizing that not only does Poison work on bosses, but it doesn't wear off over time (only with an explicit phase change, but it can easily be immediately reapplied) was HUGE for helping me get through the later parts of the game.

Personally, I thought Zhao's final Drink Link event, despite me not giving the slightest poo poo about the antagonists, was one of the best-acted scenes in the dub (Jail me). That alone sold me a ton on his character.

Kazama's orphanage (that Kiryu was raised in) is called Sunflower.

The orphanage that Kiryu runs from 3 on is Morning Glory. (Botanically, Morning Glories and Sunflowers are often grown together)

Yeah, the thing about the time between 0 and Kiwami (or before 0's release, just the time before Yakuza 1) is that Kiryu, despite his "noble" traits, is very explicitly an obedient cog in a hosed-up system. The later games show that he definitely regrets that time in his life, but you cannot convince me that Kiryu was always a good, friendly, helpful person as a pin-wearing, debt-collecting, passport-forgery-abetting member of the Tojo Clan's Dojima Family.

That was really interesting, thanks for the effort post.

Also reminded me of something I heard on a podcast, which was that some Japanese voice actors are apparently the dedicated Japanese voices for western actors for the Japanese dubs of movies/tv, which has to be a pretty sweet gig if you can get it. I wonder if that's something that happens commonly with other international voice actors, too

I imagine that works or less nicely for people like the Johnny Depp dubber, losing your whole career due to stuff done by people on the other side of the planet.

I'm finally getting into Lost Judgement after a long delay for other games, and I have to ask, is ALL of the school club stuff from the "School Stories" DLC? I'm only in Chapter 4, but that seems like a massive amount of content that feels pretty tied into the main game for it to all be DLC.

DanielCross
Aug 16, 2013
That's kind of Kiryu's problem the whole series. Every game, he insists he's out, he's done, he's not a part of it. And that would be fine. And then he goes and gets involved anyway, and that would be fine too...except he always hesitates and waits for so long to get involved that things end up way worse than if he'd either jumped in immediately or just stayed out of it.

Like, Mine says in 3, "You're always late." And 4 really exemplifies this. His refusal to get involved until after Hamazaki begs him basically directly leads to Yasuko's death. If he'd shown up earlier he could have met Akiyama and Tanimura and helped them rather than having a misunderstanding at the worst possible time, if he didn't show up at all then Akiyama and Tanimura wouldn't have gotten held up with him and could have protected Yasuko themselves.

But Kiryu, the loveable gently caress-up, just can't commit to being in or out.

Just reached Chapter 8 of Lost Judgement. :smith:

On the complete flipside, I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying the School Stories content. Like, they're not the deepest narratives, but they're all pretty different and I'm pretty invested in each of them (except Photos, eSports, and Casino, which were like, ten minutes each to finish)

Edit: Boxing Finale "Kenya Oshikiri: SUPERNOVA OF HOPE" HELL YEAH this is exactly what I mean, I'm all in on this kid

Double Edit: And then teaming up with him to beat the poo poo outta Honda, this game loving rules.

I don't know what it is exactly, but something about the line delivery of the Seiryu Rabbits cheer made.me laugh every time they did it, especially at the big conclusion of all the school stories. Whoever directed that little bit of VA, fine job imo

The English dub is especially funny, because the main girl got a proper English VA, but the rest of the Rabbits did not, so she starts off her part of the cheer in perfect English, and then the rest of the crew jumps in on the rest with the JP VA's saying their part of the line, and it's super noticeable every single time.

This. There's so much poo poo in this series that's WAY more dumb/convoluted than the Rubber Bullets twist, I genuinely don't understand why that's somehow a breaking point for people in this whole dumb series.

I finally, very belatedly, finished Lost Judgement.

I find it funny that, after spending two games yammering on about THE LAW like he's goddamn Dredd, Yagami only comes to the realization in the last five minutes of the game that The Law is not only imperfect, but actively flawed and just not working. I thought Soma was charismatic enough, though I kept expecting that Dust Allergy thing to come around to being relevant and not just a flavorful character trait, though I don't know enough about dust allergies to know if it even could cause the kind of issue that would get in the way of a fight or something. Kuwana was a little frustrating in that he just seemed to actively completely refuse to acknowledge Sawa's death as significant no matter how much Yagami kept hammering it home (which I suppose was at least partially the point).

Kaito Files next, and then I'll finally be aaaaall caught up on the series...until Isshin comes out, anyhow.

The way you phrased this makes me unsure if you know this, but in case you don't: this is literally Majima's side of the game in Yakuza 0, it's a returning minigame with returning characters.

All the Dojima lieutenants are modeled after their VA's (who are legit Japanese movie actors), so it would be really weird to bring their appearances and then have some other JP actor dub over them.

Edit: A bunch of other Y0 characters too
