I am glad to have found a disc for the PSO2 song Rare Drop Koi Koi, a song about how it is fun to play a video game and grind for rare drops

I looked them up and while they're not from the same artist like the English chapter titles, all the Japanese chapter titles are the names of popular songs:

Chapter 1: 白日 (Bright Sunshine): King Gnu, 2019
Chapter 2: 異邦人 (Foreigner): Sayuri Kume, 1979
Chapter 3: また逢う日まで (Until We Meet Again): Kiyohiko Ozaki, 1971
Chapter 4: イミテイション・ゴールド (Imitation Gold): Momoe Yamaguchi, 1977
Chapter 5: 魅せられて (Enchanted, AKA "Love is Calling Me" in English): Judy Ong, 1979
Chapter 6: 慟哭 (Lamentations): Shizuka Kudo, 1993
Chapter 7: 美しく燃える森 (Beautiful Burning Forest): Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, 2002
Chapter 8: リライト (Rewrite): Asian Kung-Fu Generation, 2004
Chapter 9: うそ (Lies): Kiyoshi Nakajo, 1974
Chapter 10: 嵐の素顔 (The True Face of the Tempest): Shizuka Kudo, 1989
Chapter 11: 祭りのあと (After the Festival): Keisuke Kuwata, 1994
Chapter 12: 粉雪 (Powdery Snow): Remioromen, 2005
Chapter 13: つぐない (Atonement): Teresa Teng, 1984
Final Chapter: ありあまる富 (Infinite Wealth): Shiina Ringo, 2009

I always love the way the Yakuza games present and flesh out the neighborhoods they're set in, and Honolulu's distinct enough from the various Japanese entertainment districts that I really enjoyed just getting like 5 chapters to soak it all in while poking at the edges of the plot

I choose jobs because I think it's funny to see Zhao in a sparkly tuxedo

whats the deal with these coffee bros anyway. are they a real thing cos its so weirdly specific and obscure it feels like it is.

Mameoka and Sorata? They aren’t real, but there is an endless stream of one-hit wonder Japanese comedy duos who get popular for like six weeks off of one catchphrase and then disappear into obscurity again

i also recall it being very mechanically mediocre from YLAD7

it's still pretty mediocre in 8, its moveset is mostly functionally identical single-target physical attacks that each buff a different stat and I don't think any of them is really worth borrowing for any other job

It's a genuine question how any of the yakuza families made money seeing as how there are twenty distinct Chinese and Korean crime organizations operating in Japan at any given time.

because of the focus on Kamurocho, we don't see the piles of money the yakuza rake in just off-screen in famous nearby neighborhoods like Akihabashi, Kinza and Happongi

if the next Yakuza game is a split protagonist game again, make it Ichiban and Kaito

Takaya Kuroda is the lead singer in the band Takaya Kuroda & Goodfellas and it's pretty good if you're into croony indie rock

How is Ishin, both play and storywise?

three of Ryoma's four fighting styles use lethal weapons so there's a different feel to the combat than the mainline games, but it felt like the coolest stuff you could do was not as effective as just using tthe basic charged katana attack

one thing I like about the English dubs is that for all the bit mid-level yakuza guys they more often than not do the broadest Brooklyn fuggedaboudit cannolis accent as if someone just found a bunch of audition tapes for Sopranos extras and decided to repurpose them

before you can truly appreciate the Ryuu ga Gotoku series, you first need to watch Beat Takeshi's entire filmography, become a certified fifth dan mahjong player, volunteer for 300 hours at an orphanage and be able to recite Suntory's complete liquor catalog from memory

That being said I think the story and characters were some of the weakest but I am not sure how historical accurate the writers tried to be.

Most of the broad strokes of the main story are fairly accurate to the actual history of the period, the two main divergences were making Sakamoto Ryoma and Saito Hajime the same guy, and basically every time Hanpeita impersonated other people to further his grand plan, especially Yamauchi Yodo

Straight up I would’ve used the dub but I can’t abide not having Kiryu’s distinctive dulcet tones for what’s presented as his send off.

7’s dub was really good! I just don’t think Kiryu’s specific voice can be replicated well in a dub. It’s way too distinct.

They could've at least gotten closer, the combination of the VA they picked and the direction they apparently gave him just miss by a mile

At the very least you need a VA who can sing

I feel like Nanba's English VA has completely different vibes between 7 and IW, it's weird

in IW it sounds like he's deliberately trying to make his voice sound more gravelly as some kind of put-on mannerism, it's a little strange

The sense of morality at play in RGG games is so muddled I have no idea if a cop who wails on people with a baton is supposed to be morally compromised or he just Get Results since the one other time you play as a cop its mostly doing stuff like this:

In the context of the game, I think it's just "the way Japanese police officers fight" since it's all taiho-jutsu techniques

My first thought as well and I really hope they do this.

Instead of hiring softcore porn actresses they should literally just film a takoyaki stall in Dotonbori

you can definitely play Ishin whenever, the references are almost exclusively "this guy in Ishin looks like a guy in another game", and there's absolutely nothing you'd have to know about the mainline games to understand what's happening in Ishin

Judgment and Lost Judgment are their own thing too, though maybe having some context about the Tojo and Omi clans as of 2018 could round out the setting

I've just been assuming that Katsuya was the new chairman, and he just let Watase run everything because Watase was the more memorable character/the one Kiryu knows.

I also feel like the Omi Alliance is a lot more factional/confederated than the Tojo Clan and the guy with the biggest family ends up being the de facto leader, instead of taking orders from above
