It was funny watching a video from some youtuber playing YLAD for the first time because I forgot that after the like hour long opening of Arakawa's past there's almost immediately another 30 minute part that's just a different part of Arakawa's past, the guy was probably 3 hours in and Ichiban was still in 1999 lol

Expecting Infinite Wealth to break these records obviously

I just started with this over the weekend, completely new to the yakuza series. About 6hrs in and it feels like I'm just watching a movie. I assume not all the games are like this. At least the story so far is pretty engaging.

The RPG mechanics in LAD so far, at least at the low levels, are not that great but the novelty and being really absurd is so great that I overlook it. I don't know much else about the series but I really look forward to completing it and then picking up Infinite Wealth in a few months after FF7.

I asked a few pages ago about playing Infinite Wealth without having played any of the others and got a response to play 0 and another to play 7. I see Gaiden also recommended on reddit. I've never had interest in these since I don't play any JRPGs, but I like the Besties podcast and they think 8 will definitely be in their GOTY discussion despite none of them previously being big Yakuza fans.

I have Game Pass so I could play 0, 7, or Gaiden easily so would the beginning of one of those be the closest representation to start with to see if I would even like 8? I suppose if I like that I would know if I would like 8, and it would be easier to convince myself to play whichever of those 3 are needed first.

I started with 7 because the trailers for 8 made me really want to play 8 and I don't have a ton of time to get into the whole series.

If you start with 7 and go straight to 8 you will miss out on a ton of backstory with one of the characters which I guess you can catch up on later or watch a youtube video.

Do not go straight into 8.

As for 8 I'm about 55 hours in and I kind of feel like I've spent most of my time playing Pokemon and Animal Crossing. My major complaint so far is having to mash to get sujimon.

Did you play any others after 7 and before 8 then or are you saying you are disappointed that you're missing a lot of Kiryu?

And yeah I don't have a ton of time. Playing 7 and then 8 looks like it would be almost 100 hours when just the main story meaning it would probably take me like 4 months.

No unfortunately due stuff I was only able to play 7, nearly finish it before FF7 Rebirth, and now I'm on 8 currently. I feel like it might have hit harder to know certain things about Kiryu like he used to run an orphanage? And I just saw a cutscene in Y8 where a little girl shot up people in a bar and that's why he's so invested in saving Lani maybe???? Just started ch7 right now.

Y7 took me about 70 hours and I'm trying not to spoil anything but Y8 seems like a 100 hr game.

I do want to play the previous entries but I honestly don't think I have the time due to other games/obligations. Looking at Elden Ring dlc after Y8... I might just have some Let's Play on in the background as I work :(

edit: You mentioned not playing a lot of RPGs so I want to say that the RPG elements in 7 and 8 are not amazing by any means but the novelty really carries it. 8 has some improvements but its still not as great as The Good JRPGs™️. Someone in this thread said you're basically playing Dragon Quest and that's largely true plus the weird absurd humor of Yakuza.

Or have the FMV team cook steaks like Dragon's Dogma 2 instead of making softcore porn.

My first thought as well and I really hope they do this.

Instead of hiring softcore porn actresses they should literally just film a takoyaki stall in Dotonbori
