LITERALLY SHAKING posted:Yes. Even people late in to life. Like at least one of my coworkers who's 40ish. I buy white ones because people generally seem to dislike them and I don't know why. I also just rip the wrapper off any decal covered one that someone leaves at my place so I can add it to the white collection.

I've met full bird captain doctors with nothing but a national defense ribbon. Recruiting good cyber people is a major problem that's been identified and there's been talk for a while at bringing them in at higher ranks just so they can offer competitive pay. They're comlletely isolated to their community and wont be line officers so they'll never be in command.

Nostalgia4Butts posted:we had a heart surgeon that direct commissioned as a O-5. Nice guy. The O6 I met at officer training command in Newport was a heart surgeon. Dude had a son that died while deployed and felt guilty. He left a multiple million dollar practice so he could go work at hospitals in Iraq/Afghanistan. This was in 2008. While at OTCN I was thumbing through one of the navy newspapers there. One was listing bonuses for various doctor specialties. Experienced anesthesiologists were given a 250k bonus and guaranteed to start as an O3 or O4. I only remember that because I think it was the highest bonus offered.

On some navy uniforms, ribbons/medals are prescribed. Working uniforms, such as the old dungarees, utilities, and wash khakis () and current NWUs & coveralls, do not ever have ribbons worn on them. Service uniforms you can wear your full rack of ribbons or just your highest 3 ribbons/medals earned on a single line. Dress uniforms, iirc, full ribbons except when wearing medals. Some functions call for mini medals but no one cares unless you're senior enlisted or an officer.

Flikken posted:Yes, lets make all E-4's in the Army NCO's at the stroke of pen. Every other branch does just fine with all their E4s at the same rank/title. Corporal vs specialist is a dumb distinction and only exists because the army is dumb. It made sense when you had up to spec 9 as an alternative career path. Now its pointless.

Flikken posted:FYI air force e-4 is not a nco. I'm not disputing your point but if you turned all of the specialists currently in the army Corporal that would uhh cause some problems. You just made everyone in the army that had been in 2 years without being flagged into NCOs. They should bring back the specialist career path anyway. And what's the big deal if they are? There are gently caress tons of petty officers in the navy that are pushbuttoned (automatic E4 or E5). The leadership roles are filled by senior E4s or E5s anyways. There is no good reason to keep specialist other than army history. Lets not act like being a corporal is really some big deal.

Flikken posted:Stealth Edit: this is a dumb argument. Much like the specialist rank. (I do agree with you this is silly) Nystral posted:Did you have to introduce yourself with your rank? "This is Private First Class Kuroyama..."? Only time you ever introduce yourself with rank is when you're talking to someone on the phone or someone you don't know. In the military your name is generally Rank Lastname instead of First Lastname. Overseas assignments always are different than conus, and it's usually not in a good way rule wise. There are a lot of dumb rules and restrictions overseas because servicemembers like to drink and rape and stab cabbies. Officers promotion and enlisted advancement are different setups. Officer promotions are congressional appointments while enlisted ranks mostly are not. The most junior officer promotions and enlisted advancement are typically automatic, though they do vary slightly branch to branch. O1-O3 is automatic unless you gently caress up bad and E1-E3 is auto in most branches. The navy pushbutton to E4 & E5 are specific contract bonuses that certain jobs can get. They do not start at those ranks, but rather automatically advance once they meet the requisite time in the previous rank (6 months at E3 and 1 yr at E4).

CTN is a field that they were actually talking about starting people at E7 a while back to match civilian pay better. If he actually makes it through school and all its one of the fastest advancing rates and the work has very little navy bullshit to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

but seriously, duder, look up ctn. There is at least one CTN goon that I know of and probably more out there. You avoid almost all navy bullshit and you get to live the neckbeard dream (although clean shaven) of being in windowless rooms surrounded by computers all day.

Nystral posted:One of my neighbors can barely walk / move his knees after 20 years in the USAF. Yet he claims that he's on 30 or 40% disability and was hoping to get it upped after an evaluation of some kind. 1) No. The 40% is the VA disability rating that determines VA eligibility and compensation. 2) No. Retirement pay will be reduced by the amount the VA pays, though, because the VA pay is tax free whereas retirement pay is income. 3) VA determines disability ratines. 4) Anything wrong with you can be rated by the VA if it's service connected. After 20 years, everything wrong with your friend is presumed service connected. Whenever he is out, he needs to set up an appointment with a VSO like the american legion or any of the ones out there. He'll file a claim for each thing wrong with him, get evaluated, and get rated. A VSO will be able to explain the entire process to your neighbor and get him taken care of.
