I've found a lot of people anxious to move on from Obamaism than I ever saw Republicans anxious to move on from Dubbyaism in 2008, so far

I think he's generally well regarded but it's plain as day to everybody that his approach is not the way forward and, in fact, was not the correct approach even then

probably because obamaism is functionally identical to dubbyaism, only an additional 8 years beyond the sell-by date

Republicans never wanted to move on from Dubyaism because they wallowed in it. They just kept silent afterwards because it was an abject and humiliating failure, and they were eager for anyone who could bring it back , i.e. Trump.

Moving on from Obamaism is basically a measured and reasoned acknowledgment that being measured and reasoned isn't going to do poo poo.

I have a lot of friends who are grade school teachers. One day one of them started sending me snaps of some writing exercise to the presidential candidates.

Every single one of them read along the lines of "dear mr trump please become president and build the wall and keep all the illegals out or we'll be doomed"

Come to think of it I don't think I've ever met an inherently liberal/smart kid.

it actually makes a real material difference to a lot of people whether the person in office is someone like bush or someone like obama and if you don't realize that its probably because you're the kind of person who's going to be just fine under trump

I think there are other differences between political parties and theories beyond "number of torturers prosecuted"

like nobody's trying to argue that we have a hard left and center right party or something, but it's also disingenuous to suggest that republicans would have come up with the ACA (since literally the first thing they set about doing after the election was repealing it) or given executive orders saying government contractors can't discriminate against homos

the difference is namely whether people die due to absolutely malicious and predatory insurance plans that don't work (instead of expensive ones that actually work) and lack of medical care resulting from it

it is pretty amazing that the ACA being shitcanned will result in the wholesale death of the R electorate and they know this hence the handwringing in the GOP

this will absolutely happen and it will be a horrifying bloodbath. the people in charge just don't seem to get that healthcare is absolutely crucial to a happy population and just kinda disregard how important it is until it's too late.

Any wholesale death of the GOP electorate for the sake of profits will more than be made up for by vote suppression and dumpstering boxes of ballots in "at risk" districts because they're all fraudulent

With the VRA gutted we're pretty much right back to the mid-50s in that regard. Nobody will be voting in 2018 that the GOP doesn't want to vote

look im not saying you are off-base about the shenanigans the GOP pulls, but this kind of cynical defeatist attitude is doing their voter suppression work for them

with politics so polarized, elections generally come down to base turnout. the party that doesn't have the presidency tends to be pissed that they're out of power, therefore more motivated. this is why midterms are dangerous for the party that has the presidency.

when democrats have the presidency long enough they get too complacent and start infighting and defecting to novelty green party candidates. republicans have better party discipline but they get demoralized when their leader is weak and embarrassing. obama is a great politician, but he is also a black dude named hussein. you can't really explain the scope of his victory in 2008 without the utter disaster of the bush administration, that even republicans were acknowledging by the end.

my point is, the republicans have the power, and their leader is historically unpopular for an incoming president; deeply embarrassing and childish on a daily basis; goes against GOP orthodoxy on several key issues; and appears to be letting the GOP push through their most unpopular legislative priorities, like repealing the ACA and Dodd-Frank. even with all the bullshit the GOP does to tilt the scales, the democrats have a big opportunity in 2018, and we should not dismiss this.
