Just caught a replay. Holy poo poo, awesome fight, Joshua looked was dead and buried after 6. I'm surprised 2 judges had Joshua winning though, I thought Wlad was up at least 2 rounds.

Julio Cruz
May 19, 2006
Parker's basically a nobody who won the title by being the slightly less awful of the two guys WBO chose to fight for it. Wilder certainly has power but he's hardly fought anyone good, and he took 9 rounds to beat Eric Molina while Joshua took 3.

Unification is going to be tough, right now Joshua has at least 3 bigger money and higher-profile fights than either Parker or Wilder (Klitschko 2, Fury, Haye, probably Bellew too) so I wouldn't hold your breath for now.

Wlad didn't get hit with a clean shot in the final flurry, but he clearly wasn't defending himself well so I'm OK with the fight being stopped before his brain got rattled yet again.

Julio Cruz

Ref asks him if he's OK and he says "yeah" shortly before curling into the fetal position. DQ was definitely the right call IMO.

Good fight so far. I have Spence 2-1.

e: is this Froch on colour? If he calls Spence "Spencer" one more time I'm gonna go apeshit.

In his defence, Froch probably can't count, so it makes sense he would think that

He certainly spent most of the fight proving he can't a) read Spence's name right or b) listen to everyone else saying it out loud.

Same eye as before with Brook, right?
He's going to be real worried about that in future if so.

No it's the other one, but even so having broken eye sockets in both of his last 2 fights is surely going to make it difficult for him to go on the attack if it means leaving himself open.

I guess might as well on both sides? Does Joshua have a bigger payday out there? By heavyweight standards recently it was actually a pretty good fight the first time around too.

I was expecting Joshua v Fury but it's possible Tyson needs more time to get back into shape (and maybe to have a tune-up) and I think Klitschko 2 sells better than any of Wilder/Parker/Haye.

Edit: Regarding Loma's Pound per Pound status, Andre Ward was cagey, citing the lack of opposition. At this point I have to wonder if it's not becoming more and more acceptable for fighters to quit against this particular guy. I mean, when you know the last 3 guys quit, that's got to make it easier for you to do it right? I haven't looked into it; did the last 3 guys absolutely tank their careers or have they gotten good fights since?

Neither Walters nor Marriaga have fought since, Sosa has fought once and lost a majority decision to Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Canelo-GGG 2 ends in another draw.
Tyson Fury replaces Haye to fight Bellew and loses in a hilarious manner.

Julio Cruz
May 19, 2006
I think GGG wins via wide decision or late stoppage in the rematch. He came out pretty cautious in the first fight until he decided Canelo couldn't hurt him, in a rematch he'd be immediately coming out swinging. Plus it'd make them both an absolute poo poo-ton of money.

Probably a bit from column A but way more column B. Browne had only fought once since 2016- after beating washed Ruslan Chagev and pissing hot- against some journeyman with a sub 500 record. He looked soft, threw around 40% of his career average and was a literal walking heavy bag.

Yeah I think you're right. At some point one of the Sky commentators said something like "how did this guy ever manage to become a world champion" which was pretty much what I was thinking at the time.

Julio Cruz

Mandatory challengers are a good idea in theory but in practice the boards need to show a bit of common sense occasionally. There's talk that Joshua might get stripped of one of his belts if he fights Wilder rather than a mandatory (I think Pulev) because god knows the first* heavyweight unification fight isn't a big enough deal to waive the rules just this once.
