The recent thing was Valve banning a group of curators (all actually run by one person) who were using the system to acquire free keys to resell

https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/valve-bans-steam-curator-groups-identified-in-key-reselling-scam-3301436

But Valve only acted after the Brok dev made a big fuss on social media, the curators system is completely overrun with fraud at this point

the curators system is a perfectly reasonable idea, but it needed oversight to keep it from descending into mass fraud, and valve are categorically unwilling to make that kind of effort

they expect features to just work without human oversight, or they defer the human work to the community through crowdsourcing, such as the tags on steam games being assigned by users (which of course gets abused)

apparently the executable for that game is named monke.exe, it has to be an intentional shitpost on some level

what if [public domain IP] but dark and twisted and hosed up? wouldn't that be epic

the people who would give it a bad review wouldn't buy it in the first place

just imagine, with GPT generating ren'py scripts and stable diffusion generating sprites and CGs you could churn out hentai visual novels with no human input whatsoever

it's a revolution in shovelware development

Right now there's some lag either way for parsing player speech and then generating a response, but I'm sure that won't be the case for ever.

that just seems to prove their point, the NPCs in that demo are generic blank slates which don't incorporate any novel worldbuilding or interaction with the game state beyond dropping everything to talk to the player when they start talking

once the novelty of talking to chatgpt inside a game wears off there's not much actually there

I’m fine with some unreliable narration from NPCs, tbh

there's unreliable and then there's elder scrolls NPCs accidentally talking about being from new york because the LLM is an inscrutable black box that can only be tweaked on a best effort basis

another not great aspect of LLM agents in games that just occurred to me is localization, nobody is going to tune a separate native LLM for each language they support so in practice it means that everyone playing in not-english is going to get the google translate experience (and that's another ongoing cloud compute burden on top of everything else)

even assuming that giant models like GPT are capable of consistently good translation, i would imagine that the models being pushed for games are much smaller and narrower in scope

We're currently at a point where a Star Trek character talking about a "rogue planet" will suddenly end up talking about a "criminal planet" in the German version of the show, and that's with a professional localization studio behind it, so i'm sure AI translations will go over just swimmingly in the future

yeah that's the kind of thing that machine translation fucks up all the time, because it lacks the broader context of the line it's translating

suck up demonstrates a major limitation of conversational AI in games as it stands - it's far too resource intensive to run locally, so it gets offloaded to the cloud, and those cloud resources are expensive so buying the game only gives you a finite number of tokens for pinging the AI servers and when you run out the game is no longer playable

that's maybe justifiable for games where talking to AI is the entire point, but not so much for more throwaway use cases like more reactive GTA NPCs

i remember MGS5 having "AI" which reacted to your strategies and deployed countermeasures (headshot everyone -> enemies start wearing helmets, etc) and people complained because they actually just want to brute force the same strategy for the whole game

it would be a lot of effort for something that players would immediately defeat by coming up with a codeword that identifies them as real

an enemy simply replaying recorded clips of players speaking would be much simpler and achieve more or less the same result
