Is that even legal? That specific drawing of knuckles is definitely a copyrighted work, and it features prominently in the game and the trailer. I give about a ~5% chance that any given game about an intermet meme actually asks the original creator for a license instead of just assuming it can do whatever it wants.

The SHA256 hashing algorithm (which bitcoin uses) is mostly relatively simple operations like performing "AND" or "OR" on individual bits. It's just that it does a whole bunch of them in a complicated order. If your gamified group of human participants perform less than a million operations per second, you're gonna be waiting a pretty long time.

Tales of Maj'eyal is definitely an outlier.

It has something like 2-300 achievements in game. But it keeps track of which difficulties you've earned those achievements on, and there are 9 different possible combinations of difficulty settings.
The solution when it was ported to Steam was to just create 9 copies of every achievement.

It's all kind of hazy to me after Portal 2... Is there like new system architecture or game engine tools they've been doing?

Well, they're trying to release new game-changing tech or demos. They're a private company with an infinite money tap, so rather than feeling pressured to make successful games, the devs are all just running around picking up different pet project that they think is gonna be the "next big thing", or at least whatever sounds cool and new. That's what all those things you listed came from, I'd say.

Ever since HL2, Valve had some hippy-dippy "everyone is their own boss" type of management structure. Mucking through the 872 billion horrible games on Steam is something no one wants to do, so no one does. A game that draws a lot of complaints will get pulled, but tiny obscure 'games' that fly under the radar can be as horrible as you can imagine.

But surely that's just for the actual developers and artists, right? They've gotta have other staff too for poo poo like maintaining the servers, janitoring the floors, handling customer service (okay maybe not that one).

e: ^^^^ AFAIK Artifact wasn't a failure because of poor development effort or bad gameplay or anything. They just had some crazy monetization scheme where you have to buy the game just to get in the door and get a basic starter deck and then pay even more real money to get any card packs. At launch there was literally no way to get any new cards to play with without microtransactions, and the ranked/competitive online mode cost money to play too (because it gave out card packs when you won).

Probably Gabe's dumb idea. He was really into the Skyrim paid mods thing too.

Surely there's someone somewhere that knows how to program + design fun gameplay, but has no artistic skill and figures something like this is good enough.

I heard goons in the roguelikes thread saying positive things about Dream Quest. It's some kind of roguelikey dungeon-exploring deck-building game, I guess like slay the spire but 5 years earlier and with MSPaint art.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, there's a copypaste that got popular because of a Reddit post about how Japanese people had this long list of keywords they would use in replies to Chinese phishing emails. From what I understand, it's not that they're hoping the government sees it, it will just automatically lock them out of the internet for a certain amount of time or something, possibly repercussions extending from there like you said but apparently the effect is instant. I know people who, with mixed results, have placed this in the chat of 1v1 games against players with Chinese steam names and they'd get booted from the game instantly.

I know some Japanese posted the original form of that myth as a joke, poking fun at Chinese censorship. Then a ton of people online started spamming it as the hot new meme.
But I haven't seen any actual evidence that it leads to people getting disconnected or having their internet shut off.

"What is Isekai?" I asked the thread, nervously.

It refers to the surprisingly popular-in-japan genre of "normal Japanese guy gets reincarnated/teleported/whatever into a fantasy world". It's especially popular among amateur web novel / light novel authors, who occasionally get popular enough to get their very own manga or anime adaptation. (Both Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero, the two shows mentioned in this thread, started out as web novel series posted online by hobbyist authors.)
The genre tends to come with overpowered mary sue main characters, and often a lot of worldbuilding through video game mechanics. But to some degree those elements are part of the popularity of the genre, and appeal to its readership.
