From what I've read, Idea Factory has a really bad reputation in Japan because most of the stuff they produce is shovelware trash like this and Agarest and so on, rather than the Neptunia series. (which was also poorly received before the re:birth remasters from what I can find)

Also, Japanese nerd companies choose to target a small subset of nerds instead of broadening their customer base, so you get stuff like cheaply-made VNs sold for AAA (or at least AA) game prices.

I've read some stuff about how the whole VN industry is trying to get out of a unsustainable spiral. Apparently sales have been dropping in Japan due to economic reasons (as usual, Millennials are killing stuff because they don't have money) and market over-saturation, which leads to studios raising prices and releasing stuff with less content because they don't have as much money in their budgets, which leads to further drops in sales. According to some stuff I saw a while back a widely popular release 10-20 years ago, would sell something like 20-30,000 units, but now 10,000 units is considered a big success and many studios have trouble selling half that amount.

last I heard, this Japanese paytowin slot-machine-simulator mobile game about boats that are actually cute anime girls is currently losing a ton of market share to the Chinese knockoff paytowin slot-machine-simulator mobile game about boats that are actually cute anime girls, but with less clothes on.

The Chinese made the exciting decision of adding actual gameplay to the mix, instead of just making a "game" where you build a spreadsheet of anime girls and then press a button to roll some dice.

And out of the hundreds of "9000 year old catgirl little sister" VNs on Steam, the only one they remove is a gay one?

Anyways, a suspiciously familiar name.

It's important to note that Kantai Collection has no actual gameplay. You just put the characters into a spreadsheet and then press a button and some animations play and that's it.

Looks like the Survarium (game by some of the Stalker devs after GSC canceled Stalker 2 and shut down) devs are jumping on the Battle Royale bandwagon. 100 legally distinct "hunters" drop into the "area" to battle for Fedorovich's Loot Crates.

Aha so it turns out the assets for Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass only partially came from a "100 Serious Sams parachute onto a island from the Talos Principle" game. :allears:

Dead or Alive has to be one of the most visually bland fighting games out there, like, I don't really play fighting games but I still at least know most of the Street Fighter characters, can recognize several Mortal Kombat and Soul Caliber characters, know that King of Fighters has the red trucker cap guy and the Shrine Maiden-Ninja girl, Killer Instinct has Sadako-with-a-spear and a dinosaur, Tekken characters are sort of a middle-ground between Street Fighter's cartoony designs and MK/SC edgelords, and the various anime fighting games are all fairly visually distinct in their designs, but my impression of DOA is "a bunch of random Asian swimsuit models punching each other."

At first a friend recommended me this title because it was apparently furry cringe. So, I went in with very low expectations, and to say I'm surprised is an understatement. This is like ironically going to see the emoji movie and getting Wreck-It Ralph. I mean wow, the gameplay could easily be classified as a rage/puzzle game as you're going to be dying ALOT. It's basically "Try not to become a furry: The Game”, except there are some great characters and a creepy tone that this game manages to pull off

So maybe this game is targeting the people who played the poo poo out of M&B multiplayer and can't be arsed to wait for Bannerlord to finally release.

:wtf: in what world does pitting your team against itself a good idea? Didnt SEARS do something similar?

Edit: or fostering an environment that would cause that to happen. Sounds like Valve would implode if not for the storefront.

The Germans did it in WWII. As we all know the Nazis were big into "Strife breeds greatness! Arrragh!" poo poo, and thus decided to apply this to their industry and as a result there was a stupid amount of infighting and duplication of effort between industrialists and elements of the Nazi party and so on. Like higher ranking Nazis would send the SS to kidnap workers from factories run by their rivals or by lower-ranking Nazis, or would send the army draft board after the workers at those factories, and the guys at the top like Goering would intentionally keep the infighting going to prevent their subordinates from getting enough political power to threaten them. One of the best German night fighter designs never got built in any great number because the head of the Reich Aviation Ministry was a fan of a different design and kept sabotaging the aircraft and also arranged for it's main proponent, one of the Luftwaffe's more capable commanders, to get exiled to Norway.

There was some girls with guns visual novel thing from a few months ago where (IIRC) there was drama leading to their main artist quitting/getting fired because the other people got upset they were spending "too much time" drawing fanart/OCs and were having life problems, refused a offer by the artist to reduce their participation in the project and take a pay cut, and then released the private messages about it in what I can only assume was an attempt to shame the artist and sabotage their future career. IIRC they also cited the artist's refusal to draw porn scenes as a reason for the split.

They get a lot of (deserved) poo poo because the majority are cheap, low-effort crap. Generally it's all the same story but with A Gimmick like "Transported to another world but I'm a vending machine" or "Transported to another world with my Hot Mom who has the dual attack skill" or whatever, but generally the gimmick and author's skill are only good for a single volume gag manga before it turns into yet another generic isekai power fantasy where the protagonist wins everything and enslaves women.
