Barudak posted:In summary; it is mechanically absolutely awful and from a narrative perspective it is explicity to the point of the main character/developer of the game in game telling you post modernism is wrong and that the game is not post modern. post modernism has lost what little meaning it still had to me now. Is there an obvious concept that 'post modernism' is standing in for in the game's narrative, or is it just a massively over-elaborate rant about doing art wrong?

Anime often has some weird demographic stuff going on where it's aimed primarily at schoolgirls and secondarily at aimless adult men, because... Japan. That said, genres like 'shonen', 'seinen' and 'shoujo' are literally named after their target demographic. That said a lot of it is also nostalgia as high school is probably the last time most Japanese people remember being allowed a smidgen of individuality and having positive social interactions. Look at Aggressive Retsuko for a closer depiction of what adult life is like.

Isn't there a thing in Japan where being given an office by the window is the equivalent of being kicked upstairs? Japan seems to have basically been ahead of the pack with the late capitalism grind where children are under immense amounts of pressure to succeed in arbitrary hoops and make connects to get what few opportunities for a stable middle-class life are left, and all too aware that any mistake or straying off that path could set them back for life. And a lot of them just plain give up after enough of those, and then you get hikkomori, 'herbivore men' and people who take being written off as surplus to requirements by society in interesting directions.

It probably doesn't help I'm hearing 'Naked Butler' as a jaunty title theme tune like Lil' Butler from Steven Universe.

It goes the other way too, I loosely remember a big fuss when they banned/rejected Ladykiller in a Bind for having explicit sex and a rape scene.

That paragraph was written from the perspective of someone who thinks that lazy criminals and smart people are two different categories of existence; whether it was the author or one of their characters is uncertain, but presumed at time of writing to be the author (since it's in a block called "Synopsis" and not "History of the world, 3rd edition") Of course there are various conspiracy theories basically involving a manufactured underclass of undesirables being inflicted upon a society by (((Certain People))) whose existence is prolonged by bleeding-hearts and race traitors.

I know at least one or two people who had a real thing for men being transformed into women, and surprisingly enough they ended up coming out as a trans woman. These things are all over the place. And don't think it's exclusive to men in the slightest, Naked Butler is still on Steam isn't it?

Somfin posted:Not out loud. New Sincerity works are massively undercut by explicit self-awareness like that. Implicit self-awareness, on the other hand, is solid gold; a good New Sincerity work knows not to, for example, waste your goddamned time even if that's a genre staple. ...so the main examples of New Sincerity are things which were made either before the term was a thing or likely in complete ignorance of it?

The terminally online have to invent a new term to define 'not being irony poisoned about everything all the time', which I'm pretty sure actually just means have absolutely no shame or humility even by terminally online standards. Though that just might be coincidental given the kind of people who desperately cling to a new buzzword that they'd have no idea what it means even if it had a meaning in the first place. Like Super Mario Odyssey is just Nintendo doing what they've always been doing, making some gameplay innovations while mostly keeping what works and celebrating their history along with their fans, and Undertale is a game that takes apart many of the concepts and assumptions of RPGs (which I thought would easily fall into postmodernism in that it acknowledges, examines and subverts pre-existing assumptions and experiences its audience is assumed to have, as well as its heavy use of parody and mockery of pop culture, especially that which much of its target audience is assumed to like) while also having its own story to tell.

Which just backs up my theory that it really means 'having absolutely no self-awareness'.

And just to take things full circle I'm pretty sure this ends up with the new sincerity dorks putting a lot of aggressive effort into performatively liking things so they maintain cred Oh no I've gone cross eyed

Kinda does seem like the people making YIIK had some decent cred with the indie community and at least some of them thought the game looked promising before it came out and turned out to be actually pretty terrible. I'm guessing most of them guessed that at worst it would be harmlessly quirky, but you know how these things pan out.

NutritiousSnack posted:Also I'm feeling mildly bad for the Subverse people when I mock them, they are trying to make a game without Crunch and actually distribute the game's profit more equitably according to interviews. That really is a noble goal and especially since this game looks like it's going to be a legitimate hit. Exploitation and crunch also heavily effect a lot of this self funded indie games. There's been a complete blackout of coverage in pretty much all the English gaming press. Let's face it, probably because they have no idea whether they're supposed to praise it for being woke or drat it for being objectifying and are waiting for someone to blow the whistle.

Might be something significant given how a lot of porn games either tend to get stuck in development hell because the devs are all amateurs doing it in their spare time, or fall apart because one of them runs off with all the assets or something, that it takes a healthy and equitable dev environment for anything remotely major to get a hope of actually being released.

Rotten Red Rod posted:To be fair, a LOT of the fuckups and aimlessness on Anthem were due to EA forcing them to use the Frostbite engine. It can't be overstated how awful that engine is to work with if you aren't Dice and making a Battlefield game. They had to scrap their original concepts in large part because of the engine - maybe if they didn't, they would have stuck with a consistent vision and made a decent game. Not to mention all the times they had to pull people off the project to concentrate on DA:I and ME:A due to Frostbite causing development issues...! Plus, the release date was mandated by EA. Was going to mention that, though I wasn't aware of how major it was. Figures that the one EA mandated problem is basically Not Invented Here.
