Weirdly enough I'm reminded of a short story I once read about a machine that automatically writes stories (controlled with an interface more like a car) and they quickly realise that it can't make anything really new or exceptional, it can only at best produce mediocrity, because it's only copying what came before in semi-random order. People figured this out a long time ago.
