Attended my first Seattle DSA meeting last night. The attendance was huge; they had just moved to a new location to fit all the new people, and now they're going to have to move again because they ran out of space and people had to crowd outside the room. They mostly talked about last week's protests and preparing for internal elections and drafting the chapter's main principles.

One of the reasons I'm not scared about fascism winning out in America is because the fascists here are keyboard warriors and any attempt to turn their rhetoric into real world violence either ends up with them running away or getting swiftly punched out Remember how everyone got scared that Bikers For Trump would be the new SS until they looked at the size of the crowd and just stood there all day like a bunch of pussies

My local DSA redesigned their website and now they have their own version of 5 Calls for local issues in Washington: https://calls.seattledsa.org/ This is a really cool idea and I hope other chapters follow suit.

Pollyanna posted:It helps that the average person takes better to "let's talk about inequality and what we can do to improve our society" than they do to "let's talk about how lovely jews and women are", re: proselytizing. I honestly believe that most people would be on the side of the DSA over the alt-right. that's not a surprise, the alt right are a bunch of openly racist unshaven college students that carry around anime gently caress pillows, it is not possible for a movement to be less accessible to normal people

Acting like "the Democrats" is some sort of foreign faraway entity and not a dumb group of clueless idiots you can influence and replace is stupid as hell If you think that ousting incompetent clowns like Robby Mook from the Dem power structure is too hard of a task for you, then good luck accomplishing anything else

maybe instead of complaining that bad dems won't literally roll over and resign in shame, you should run good candidates for office and convince more people to vote for them than the bad dems so you don't have to deal with their bullshit anymore part of why the left has failed to reform the party is because they just run a flashy presidential candidate every four years and then give up because serious political change is boring and hard

unbutthurtable posted:A sweet spot in the middle is to use the main meetings to have the different working groups present their status update to the main organization and advertise for the events they've planned where they need the massed actions of the group at large. If feasible, you can precede this stage of a meeting with 20 minutes or so, where everyone breaks into their group for more details. This is how it is in Seattle. They also do a pretty good job in making sure that more casual members are clued into various marches and phone call campaigns. They're also working on a system for texting alerts.

I'm black so I guess I'm exempt from this question, but my local chapter has a "progressive stack" system of calling on members that prioritizes POC/LGBT voices. It's Seattle so there's not too many POC but they definitely do stress intersectionality

Lack of nonwhite support killed Bernie's campaign, so I'm not surprised that the DSA is trying to stress racial intersectionality in order to have a successful socialist movement

people realize that there are heavily black districts in the south, right?
|
# ¿ May 3, 2017 04:53 |

people don't pay attention to black districts in the south because people vote by racial lines, meaning you get a handful of districts where all the black people are crammed in, and then all the statewide races that matter are dominated by white R voters it's especially bad in MS because there aren't any actual urban centers to even things out. Jackson is the largest city in MS and it's only 171k people
