There's no DSA chapter in my state. I did get control of the Facebook page from the college student who had made it and have been making daily posts. I set up an informal meet up at a Dunkin Donuts for DSA members and those interested for this Friday. I hope people show up.

GlyphGryph posted:The DSA chapters seem to very... city centric, right now. Is that just a consequence of that being where people have started chapters, or do they prefer as an organization those larger more condensed organizational meetings? I asked about places where there's no city and the membership is spread out and was told the New Jersey DSA rotates it's meetings between towns to help people not have to travel to far every month.

Hey all. Had 9 people total at the DSA meeting I organized today. The meeting went rather well as an icebreaker. We discussed getting involved in our Dem Town Committees and town politics to push better candidates. We talked about the various issues we wanted to work on and the situation we face in NH. Everyone there was a new member. A lot of former Bernie supporters venting about Clinton and the Dems withered roots. We're going to meet again in two weeks to formally form a DSA Organizing Committee. I'm pretty happy.

Hey everyone the NH DSA had another meeting. 24 people showed up. It was a bit of a cluster because the bar wasn't prepared for all of us (they told me they a separate room for us when I made the reservation, but that wasn't true), but we had a good discussion in smaller groups. One person might be able to get us space at NCC or maybe the Hooksett Library. A lot of people want to do something, but seem unsure what they can do. I hope to lockdown a larger venue and channel this into something that will make a positive difference in NH.

GlyphGryph posted:OhFunny can you tell us more about how you got started? A few of us are trying to start up our own chapters and maybe your guidance would be useful Sure thing. I first heard about the DSA here on SA and looked for the closest group on Facebook and found a NH DSA Facebook page. The person who had created it had posted for help organizing since they are a college student and were leaving the state for school. I was unsure what to do since the NH DSA was basically just him and a Facebook page, Syndlig told me on the Dem/DSA Discord to seize everything and run myself, and the person handed me the NH DSA Facebook when I asked. I just started making at least 1 page a day on either something related to NH or Trump. I then just decided to make an informal meeting at a Dunkin Donuts on a Saturday and 9 people showed up. I brought a notebook and got everyone's name and number. Another person volunteered to write a newsletter. When we were discussing where next to meet we decided on Manchester and I just started calling up bars asking if they had a spare room to use and emailed everyone that's where we would meet along with making an event on Facebook. I'm going to meet with 2 other people Wednesday after work to hammer out an actual agenda so things are less of a meet and greet next time. I was told by someone who is attending a community college they might be able to get us a classroom to meet in cost-free. I was also told of a library where we can meet that's also cost free. One person is a member of the Teamsters Union and a full fledged communist. I hope to be able make inroads with them through him. I know it's cliche, but build it and they will come. Don't worry about the first steps being perfect. The important thing is take those first steps.

Thanks to the great people with me in the NH DSA. We're going to rent a room at a local UU Church for our next meeting. I had a meeting with, well let's call it the Organizing Committee, and after some discussion we're going to organize a protest Senator Hassan or Shaheen's office like NYC DSA did to Chuck Schumer. To keep the fire under their feet. Also to set up a committee for Direct Action, for Theory Education, and for Community Service/Involvement. I'd like to present a platform of 15/h min. wage, free tuition, and public childcare at the next meeting as things to immediately fight for in New Hampshire after having a lot one-on-ones with the people who showed up at the last meeting.

Fiction posted:Do you think those goals are attainable in a state like NH? How strong is the small-c conservative influence there? I picked them because I feel those three are the most attainable in the state. Conservative influence is strong with a healthy dose of libertarianism and Republicans have complete control of the state government at the moment. I place that blame on failure of the Democrats and Clinton's campaign which depressed turnout here. You might remember that Sanders crushed Clinton 60/38 in the NH primary. NH had only one single term Republican governor (our governors serve only two years.) since 1997 and control of the House and Senate has swung back and forth depending on turnout. 1. $15/hr: New Hampshire has the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 2.7%. We're facing a worker shortage. Massachusetts and Maine just raised their minimum wage. Why would someone stay in the state and work here when they can make more somewhere else with benefits on top of that? We need to attract skilled workers into the state and a competitive wage is how to do it. 2. The University of New Hampshire is one of the most expansive public schools in the country. Our students have been going out of state for college or graduating with crushing debt. This was a plank of the Sanders campaign and I intend to carry it forward. UNH announced they will be raising tuition again due to not receiving requested budget increases. 3. Public child daycare is widely support. Even our new Republican governor has a plan for it. The state needs public daycare for those who don't have family or who can't afford private daycare. Right now it's a responsibly of the towns which shuts out the poor.

Ronald McReagan posted:An odd argument for a socialist group to be making, imo. Republicans already by and large support minimum wage increases, no need to cede ideological ground to them in the process of fighting for it. Let me try that again then. We need a $15/min. wage because the American worker is getting crushed. Why is it my mother gets a 1% pay raise annually and a lot of her coworkers get 0%? And Jamie Dimon gets another $10 million? My great-grandfather was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America for 40 years. Paid his union dues and retired with his pension and Social Security for 30 years. My great-grandmother didn't have to work. You can't do that now. It's not enough to bring jobs back or keep jobs if they offer poo poo pay and no benefits. More and more wealth is getting concentrated into fewer and fewer hands. We need to fight for workers, fight for unions, and the first step is $15/min. wage. Get that money into the hands of those who need it to live and not billionaires and millionaires counting their stock options. New Hampshire has no minimum wage laws btw. We default to the Federal minimum of $7.25.
