I don't mind random encounters, personally, as long as they're handled intelligently like in this game, or other games that allow you to adjust encounter rates to your taste, even if you need to use spells and/or consumable items to do so. Low detail 2d sprites with 2 frames of animation are worlds away from animated 3d models, which you know modern gamers would demand. DQ8 3ds did it so it is possible, but it has its own limitations with encounters
