STRONG as an OX and TWICE as SMART
Is this also the thread for lower division US soccer?

Tonight is the national semifinals for the NPSL. The matchups are:

(1) Elm City Express (New Haven, CT) vs. (4) CD Aguilochos USA (Oakland, CA) -- Kickoff is 7PM in New Haven. Elm City is the #1 remaining seed, going 9-1-2 in the Northeast Conference Atlantic Blue Division in their first season. I dot know poo poo about this team except that they play on Yale's pitch.

CD Aguilochos USA went 8-3-1 in the West Conference Golden Gate Division. That earned them a first round bye and an easy road to the semifinals. They last made the semifinals in 2015, losing to the NY Cosmos B team. They benefited from an early upset of undefeated FC Arizona.

A lovely stream for the game is here.

(2) Detroit City FC (Hamtramck, MI) vs. (3) Midland-Odessa FC (Midland, TX) -- Kickoff is 7:30PM in Hamtramck. Midland-Odessa formerly played in the PDL as the West Texas Sockers (:barf:) before making a lateral move to the NPSL. Last year, they lost in the PDL semifinals 3-0 to the Michigan Bucks, so it would be a fine coincidence if DCFC knocks them out this year. Midland-Odessa went 7-3-0 South Conference Lone Star Division. They've made a remarkable playoff run with 4 straight wins, including the #1 seed in their conference, FC Wichita.

DCFC went 9-2-3 in the Midwest Conference Great Lakes Division after starting the season 0-1-2 then rattling off 9 straight wins. Both losses came to the #1 team in the league (based on points per game), Ann Arbor AFC. In the playoffs, they put up 10 goals in 2 games against Dakota Fusion and Duluth FC before facing Ann Arbor AFC for the conference finals. DCFC took a 2 goal lead into half time, squandered it to 10-man AAAFC, and the scored a dramatic 94th minute goal for the first regional championship in team history.

DCFC plays in a stadium renovated with $740,000 of donations. They routinely fill the stadium with over 5000 fans and have a pretty killer supporters' section. The only NPSL team that compares in Chattanooga FC. Tonight's game is sold out, so somewhere around 7200 people will be there. To note, the average attendance for the USL is only 4400.

A great stream for the game is here.

Was there, 7500 in attendance. Midland simply outplayed DCFC and it's a god send they went to kicks. Great run for le rouge though.

E: oh, the officiating was really really bad. Ref didn't understand offside rule at all and called the end of the second half at a clear corner kick to DCFC. Either way though, Midland deserved the win unfortunately.

Was at the game as well; the 7,500 reported seemed at least crazier (and significantly larger) than the previous 7,400 record at Keyworth. Can also confirm the officiating seemed especially poor, even for the NPSL.

DCFC was exceptionally lucky the game went into extra time, though once it did it seemed like DCFC came on and controlled the entire 30 minutes despite not being able to finish. Midland's keeper played out of his mind in PKs, props to him.

Yes! The D2 drama over the winter caused the thread title to be a little too specific.

Rowdies beat Harrisburg Coat Outlet 3-0, move into tie for 2nd place (actually third, 1 goal difference). Pickens plays 100th match for the Rowdies, gets his own "fear the beard" Tifo:

The current NPSL scuttlebutt is that Midland-Odessa FC don't have enough remaining players to field a team for the championship, opening the real (inevitable?) possibility that the match will be forfeit and Elm City will be crowned champs.

The only other possible option is the league sabotaging itself and offering DCFC the spot, which would be insane. It also doesn't seem like the DCFC FO has any interest in entertaining that possibility.

As one of them, there's definitely people who have their... let's call them strong opinions. Personally, I'm more keen on the grassroots efforts of the SG and club and very much not a fan of the idea of Detroit funding yet another stadium. Gilbert seems like a crap owner (judging by his inability to do anything other than luck into LeBron twice) and I'm already wary of the amount of power he wields in the city as it is, too.
Though I will say, at least from the informal polls run by NGS themselves, the overall base is split roughly down the middle on supporting a potential MLS team. It's mostly the founders who've helped build the SG and the club who are vehemently opposed to MLS, which is understandable. Not everyone's thrilled when WalMart rolls into town.

But a good little doc! Apparently they recorded way, way more footage than they ended up using, I'm hoping they do something with it instead of letting it fall by the wayside.

e: Don't mean to be confrontational or start up any debate about MLS or whatever, just giving my two cents.

Why would you build a minor league soccer stadium in the same bad location as a race track known for being in a bad location?

And also UT-Austin seemingly has right of first refusal on every single tract of land suitable for a soccer field that doesn't belong to a local high school.

It'd be great for the overall product on the field, but part of the charm of the NPSL is that most of the teams in our division play within a couple of hours of one another.

It would be nice to have a team that isn't stocked with college players who are recalled at the end of the season.

I like the point in the article that it'll breed more of a rivalry between the inevitable MLS team. Can totally see that

Considering you only have three home games left, I wouldn't worry too much about not getting the highest attendance medal. I WOULD worry about losing 5-0.

Las Vegas Lights sounds like the name of a lite beer, or a Vegas show, though.

I'd have gone with reviving one of the old club names like Las Vegas Quicksilvers.

But I agree FC is overused, as is SC, which is even worse since "soccer" is just a nickname for association football; if we are going to use initials, then AFC and SFC and AC aren't being used yet in MLS; I think there's only one AFC currently in USL(?).

But then I am weird and perverse; I like names like Austin Aztex.

San Antonio FC should have been San Antonio Hotspur (they are owned by the San Antonio Spurs; so much better name than just another FC).

Phoenix Rising should have been Phoenix XI (XI = 11, or the last two letters of Phoenix, reversed).

Orlando City should have been Orlando Furioso (all the literary nerds would have loved it).

Yes I'm weird and too clever by half; but the MLS/USL soccer marketing drones are unimaginative and clueless about soccer history and tradition and simply don't get clever references; they just mindlessly copy whatever is the current fad or trend.

Las Vegas Silver finished third in voting. From the way the fan vote was structured they would have added an SC/FC to whatever name won. I'm sure some people, like me, submitted Quicksilver but it never even made the top six. I also suggested something like Vegas 1906, a nod to the year the town was founded.

So this is the best we've got, at least until the planets align years in the future and they get renamed.
