STRONG as an OX and TWICE as SMART
Is this also the thread for lower division US soccer?

Tonight is the national semifinals for the NPSL. The matchups are:

(1) Elm City Express (New Haven, CT) vs. (4) CD Aguilochos USA (Oakland, CA) -- Kickoff is 7PM in New Haven. Elm City is the #1 remaining seed, going 9-1-2 in the Northeast Conference Atlantic Blue Division in their first season. I dot know poo poo about this team except that they play on Yale's pitch.

CD Aguilochos USA went 8-3-1 in the West Conference Golden Gate Division. That earned them a first round bye and an easy road to the semifinals. They last made the semifinals in 2015, losing to the NY Cosmos B team. They benefited from an early upset of undefeated FC Arizona.

A lovely stream for the game is here.

(2) Detroit City FC (Hamtramck, MI) vs. (3) Midland-Odessa FC (Midland, TX) -- Kickoff is 7:30PM in Hamtramck. Midland-Odessa formerly played in the PDL as the West Texas Sockers (:barf:) before making a lateral move to the NPSL. Last year, they lost in the PDL semifinals 3-0 to the Michigan Bucks, so it would be a fine coincidence if DCFC knocks them out this year. Midland-Odessa went 7-3-0 South Conference Lone Star Division. They've made a remarkable playoff run with 4 straight wins, including the #1 seed in their conference, FC Wichita.

DCFC went 9-2-3 in the Midwest Conference Great Lakes Division after starting the season 0-1-2 then rattling off 9 straight wins. Both losses came to the #1 team in the league (based on points per game), Ann Arbor AFC. In the playoffs, they put up 10 goals in 2 games against Dakota Fusion and Duluth FC before facing Ann Arbor AFC for the conference finals. DCFC took a 2 goal lead into half time, squandered it to 10-man AAAFC, and the scored a dramatic 94th minute goal for the first regional championship in team history.

DCFC plays in a stadium renovated with $740,000 of donations. They routinely fill the stadium with over 5000 fans and have a pretty killer supporters' section. The only NPSL team that compares in Chattanooga FC. Tonight's game is sold out, so somewhere around 7200 people will be there. To note, the average attendance for the USL is only 4400.

A great stream for the game is here.

It'd be great for the overall product on the field, but part of the charm of the NPSL is that most of the teams in our division play within a couple of hours of one another.

It would be nice to have a team that isn't stocked with college players who are recalled at the end of the season.
