Because you own the land, and it's your fallback option.
And also UT-Austin seemingly has right of first refusal on every single tract of land suitable for a soccer field that doesn't belong to a local high school.

We went through the same thing last year. In order for both the USL and NASL to get "provisional" Division 2 status, they had to have their initial applications rejected, followed by weeks of back and forth between the leagues and the USSF.

The difference this time is that somebody made the initial decision public immediately after it was made.

Because soccer in the US isn't enough of a clusterfuck, apparently we now have the NPSL sending letters to the USSF and threatening to sue because - if you'll believe the reporting - the USL has been caught bribing NPSL teams to switch over to the USL's amateur circuit, the Premier Developmental League or PDL or whatever you call it.

One of the good lower-league news sources was able to confirm the attempts to intice NPSL teams to switch with 2-3 owners, but they wouldn't go on the record because apparently things are still unfolding.

So now we have a kerfuffle over teams being offered cash to switch amateur soccer leagues.

Shame about the Deltas. They never had a chance, what with that terrible logo/league.
They would have had a chance had the owners hired actual front office specialists instead of literally trying to crowdsource attendance through word of mouth.

Also their ticket prices, for American D2 soccer, were hilarious.

San Diego 1904 is the name of a new NASL club, but you don’t want to know why it’s called that.
Given the indirect Anchorman reference let's just agree to call it Whale Vagina FC.

also not that it matters but either the san francisco deltas who folded on september 1 or north carolina railhawks football club who are defecting will be in the final nasl soccerbowl lmao
Scuttlebutt on the Deltas is that the dude who folded up the PDL's Burlingame Dragons after looking at a USL bid might take over the team.

The Malik thing: yeah I can kind of see why people are mad at him. It reads like he dropped all support of the league in order to chase his 3% chance of getting an MLS team in Raleigh, North Carolina.

I get the redesign given how dated the old logo looked, but holy balls there is way too much going on there.
