If Washington thought that Vegas would for sure take Grubauer they could trade him to get some return. Or they could make a trade with LV to leave him unprotected from Washingtons side or not take him from Vegas' side.

Vegas taking Grubauer would be ok all things considered. Obviously it sucks losing a quality backup but he's never going to supplant Holtby, and otherwise they are likely going to lose Orlov or Schmidt who are both good enough to be regular top 4 defensemen.

I'd be thrilled if Vegas took Tom Wilson for some dumb reason.

Yeah I really doubt Beagle is taken. He's a fine 4C and PKer but he'll be a UFA after next season and he's struggled in any top 9 role.

Orlov is looking like a lock to be protected so I would guess McPhee is going to select Schmidt or Grubauer. The Caps don't really have any NHL ready D in the system now so I hope it's Grubauer. I'm assuming Alzner is going to like Calgary or Edmonton on some insane deal this offseason.

From an outsider's view Maatta has looked terrible almost every time I have watched him. Obviously I don't watch every Penguins game so I might be missing something, but it seems like Dumoulin is a much better player.

Yeah Bruce Cassidy was a legit rear end in a top hat behind the bench with no clue what he was doing. The Capitals team he had was pretty talented (Jagr, Bondra, Gonchar, Kolzig, Lang, etc.) and he managed to turn them into poo poo.

So congrats Bruins friends.

Someone should offer-sheet Gostisbehere this offseason but it'll never happen. For instance, would the Flyers be willing to match a $5M contract for 6 years or would they just take the first and third as compensation?

The one thing I'm latching on to to keep the hope alive is that I don't recall them keeping opponents from scoring so well last year. Seems like we've have a pretty ridiculous number of 4-0, 5-1, kind of games.

I've actually noticed something a little different. Obviously they have really good defensive depth and a Vezina goaltender and that is always going to keep the goals against numbers down, but instead of sitting back like they did for much of last year they've shifted to all-out attacking hockey over the past 2 months or so. For the most part they are trying to blow out opponents instead of trying to grind out 2-1 wins like they did the prior two seasons under Trotz. Sometimes it will lead to games like the 8-7 OTL against Pittsburgh or the 5-4 OT win against Toronto, but it's also going to lead to ridiculous blowouts in their favor. I'm extremely encouraged by the fact that Trotz has decided to let his players play an offense-first system and rely on a stud goaltender to cover up any defensive mistakes that may result.

Also it can't be overstated how much of an upgrade Lars Eller is over Mike Richards and how good Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt have been in transition.

Yes their PDO is sky-high right now, but their underlying possession numbers are excellent as well. Hopefully they don't do anything dumb like acquire Mike Weber to replace Orlov or Schmidt in the lineup in the postseason!

The Capitals have abandoned all pretense of the turtle after taking early leads and it is really refreshing.

Also their third line (Connolly-Eller-Burakovsky) is fantastic this season. I think they are only behind the insane Marchand-Bergeron-Pasta line in terms of possession this season. Unfortunately it looks like Burakovsky probably broke his hand last night blocking a shot but I assume that's like 6-8 weeks so he should be good to go for the playoffs.

No one should have faith in the Capitals' ability to win in the playoffs because of their history (OTOH Trump is president and the Cubs just won a World Series so anything can happen).

But it's also reasonable to say that this is probably the best team they have ever had in the regular season despite having two seasons of 120+ points in the past 7 years or whatever. Their PDO will come back to Earth but their underlying play has been excellent for months (unlike last season) and I think it's reasonable to expect them to maintain a higher than 100 PDO given the quality of their goaltending and shooters.

Shea Weber only has 12 5v5 points on the year, which is the same number as Brooks Orpik or Andrew MacDonald. Weber has also played 200+ more minutes than both of these guys at 5v5.

Here is my favorite Michal Neuvirth story:

http://www.russianmachineneverbreak...ompetition-yet/

quote:

You mentioned that Holtby is the weakest competition, but he was awesome in playoffs, don’t you think?

"He sure is a great goalie. But I can’t compare him to Voky or Varlamov, that’s what I meant. In comparison to those two, he played nothing in the NHL and that’s why I take him as the weakest of them three. I’m definitely not saying that he is bad, not at all. I actually like the way he plays. But he is the worst of them three, that’s all.

I’m not afraid because of how he did in the playoffs. I think that a year ago I played in the playoffs the same as he did now. They always say that the second season is the turning point, I’m curious how he will do…"

Holtby pretty much single-handedly beat the Bruins in 2012 (they were arguably a better team that year than when they won the Cup), and Neuvirth poo poo his pants in 2011 against the Lightning. Also Holtby is like a top 3 goaltender in the league and Neuvirth is rocking an .887.

Also I had no idea he cheated on his wife. gently caress that guy.
