CSN has a good breakdown of Caps backup goalie Grubauer, the German wall.
http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/washington-capitals/almost-everything-else-caps-goaltending-has-been-ridiculous

quote:

Among goaltenders who have appeared in at least 15 games, Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer rank among the top four in both save percentage (Holtby boasts a .929/4th, while Grubauer has a .931/3rd) and goals against average (Holtby has miniscule 1.99/tied for 3rd, while Grubi checks in with a slightly better 1.98/2nd.)

Grubauer has produced 10 quality starts in 13 opportunities, giving him the second highest quality start percentage (.769) among goalies that have started at least 10 games. Last season, he produced seven quality starts in 16 opportunities (.438). Holtby, meantime, is tied for the sixth most quality starts this season with 25.

Well he does know a lot about goaltending and that seems to be an issue for the Bruins this year. Clearly a really good fit!

It took Barry Trotz and Mitch Korn a year to undo the damage to Holtby. I wouldn't wish Oatse.cx on my bitterest rival.

Yadda yadda nother caps 5-0 shutout, blah blah they'll still lose in the playoffs, etc. etc. Round and round we go.

Holy crap are the Caps playing scary good right now, I love it so much but I know they'll break my heart in the postseason... :smith:

I've actually noticed something a little different. Obviously they have really good defensive depth and a Vezina goaltender and that is always going to keep the goals against numbers down, but instead of sitting back like they did for much of last year they've shifted to all-out attacking hockey over the past 2 months or so. For the most part they are trying to blow out opponents instead of trying to grind out 2-1 wins like they did the prior two seasons under Trotz. Sometimes it will lead to games like the 8-7 OTL against Pittsburgh or the 5-4 OT win against Toronto, but it's also going to lead to ridiculous blowouts in their favor. I'm extremely encouraged by the fact that Trotz has decided to let his players play an offense-first system and rely on a stud goaltender to cover up any defensive mistakes that may result.

Also it can't be overstated how much of an upgrade Lars Eller is over Mike Richards and how good Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt have been in transition.

Yes their PDO is sky-high right now, but their underlying possession numbers are excellent as well. Hopefully they don't do anything dumb like acquire Mike Weber to replace Orlov or Schmidt in the lineup in the postseason!

They made it through the All Star break, now they have to make it through the bye week. If they come back from that and still look the same, there's hope.

By the way, this happened before the Caps game tonight and owned.

The announcer took a not so veiled shot at Trump which also owned.

It all began when Al Ali met Peter Bondra during a youth hockey clinic the Capitals alumnus was helping to run in Abu Dhabi in November. Bondra was impressed by Al Ali's puck-handling skills and posted a video on Twitter of her whipping the puck around lacrosse-style on her stick blade that went viral.

The players in the Caps locker room feel the urgency. Getting bounced by the Pens in round 2 showed them that they can't coast through the last few months of the regular season and expect wins in the playoffs. For them, they know it has to be now. TJ Oshi and Karl Alzner are both UFA's, both critical to the team, and both will rightfully demand a payday this offseason. Kuznetsov is a RFA, but they will only be able to do so much. Finally, there's the Las Vegas draft, who knows who we might lose. Our former GM is picking players.

Gotta be now.

Unfortunately our bye week starts on Sunday at the worst possible time. If they can come back from that and keep their current momentum, I'll drink the Koolaid and start to believe.
