Speaking of contracts, it's interesting to see the cap fall on it's face compared to what we expected say 2-3 years ago. I wonder if Bergevin was prepared for a 32 year old Subban with a 9MM hit on a 85MM cap, or Poile with a 40 year old Weber with a 8MM hit on a 95MM cap.

Well, Poile had limited options in the Weber contract situation.

Though them taking the 4 firsts and letting Weber go is an interesting timeline to consider. They probably would have been a little worse for the last 4 years but they were bad for 2 of those years anyway. Probably would be better off now.

edit: Philly's cap situation would have been hilarious.

Also Vinny Viola is dropping out of being Secretary of the Army because he couldn't divest his business enough to meet the ethical standards, which is hilarious considering who nominated him.

Those weren't really crazy contracts. Just guys who died early.

Looking forward to 2025 when Weber, Suter, and Parise still have $7.5m+ cap hits.

If you get 6 great years, 3 good years and 3 bad years in a 12 year contract then it worked out phenomenally, even though it comes out as "too long" in the end. It's the ones that turned bad in the 3rd year that were the real issue.

I was trying to find a list of the long contracts and came across this article http://grantland.com/the-triangle/were-any-long-term-nhl-contracts-a-good-idea-2/

A ton of these guys are out of the league already. Keith, Luongo, Zetterberg, Hossa, Ovechkin, Backstrom, and maybe Carter are already 6+ good years in on their deals.

Visiting Nashville, glad I picked tonight's game to go to and not the 7-4 loss from yesterday. Preds looked mostly ok, but man did the Stars just tank in the final period.

Bridgestone arena was always nice, but they really made it a lot shinier since I was last there (4-5 years ago).

I went to both and can confirm, Sunday was way more fun.

The CBA expires after the 2011-22 season, and both the Habs and Preds are going to get out of the recapture on Weber's contract.

IMO that would be a good compromise for closing the Pronger-style LTIR loophole, since that will probably be where most of those recapture contract players are in 2022.

Anything over 8 years, so a bunch including:

Sidney Crosby

Marian Hossa
Duncan Keith

Jeff Carter

and a bunch of others who have already moved on including:

Ilya Bryzgalov
Brad Richards
Vinny Lecavalier
Mike Richards
Christian Ehrhoff
Johan Franzen

You'd have to get a majority of owners to let a handful of teams out of some very dubious contracts that benefited them cap wise while escalating salaries across the league. So yeah, they're here to stay.

Also Zetterberg and Kronwall. And I think Franzen is still on the books, just perma-IR. Zetterberg has a pretty steep recapture if he retires early at all, at this point.

There have been 10 trades involving players to appear in an NHL game this year, not one of them has involved a player who regularly appears in the lineup. The esteemed list is:

Vern Fiddler (43 GP)
Tommy Wingels (42 GP)
Nikita Nesterov (41 GP)
Logan Shaw (37 GP)
Nail Yakupov (31 GP)
Mike Condon (31 GP)
Cody McLeod (31 GP)
Peter Holland (27 GP)
Michael Sgarbossa (27 GP)
Dylan McIlrath (5 GP)
Jonas Enroth (3 GP)
Steve Kampfer (1 GP)

I really wish the NHL would do something to start encouraging more trades, because that is stupid. Trades in the NBA are just as complicated, and yet they've had a bunch of big deals so far. Being able to trade cap space was supposed to improve things, but if anything they've got worse. The Hall/Larsson and Subban/Weber trades were entertaining as hell and surely the NHL must see that they're great for the sport? Constant excuses from GMs and an abject lack of noteworthy player movement is just a needless way to bleed entertainment from a sport already desperately short on casual fans.

Expansion draft might be an influence too, this year. Also every team thinks they can make the playoffs.

I think they'll protect Neal and Arvy and leave Wilson and Smith and Aberg and Jarnkrok exposed. At least they only lose one!
