Tom Perez is fine. I wouldn't have voted for him, but the main knock on him is basically 1) Bernie didn't endorse him, 2) He was an Obama appointee, and 3) as an Obama appointee, he talked the administration line re: TPP.

Fortunately, given that DNC chair is emphatically not a policy job and is about apportioning resources and coordinating strategy of various other campaigns... and given that what's Perez has had to say sounds an awful lot like what Keith Ellison has had to say, and having him be the chair as a full time job and letting Ellison stay in congress...

Eh, it's fine.

It's not good or exciting but loving lol if this is your line in the sand.

A good point; virtually everything that the most obnoxious City types hold special about NYC exists solely because of the Finance sector in one sense or another. The irony is that the actual scumbags that work on wall st are less obnoxious about the magic of NYC than the anime Marxists in Brooklyn

perez doesn't want to ban corporate donations, which is a severe red flag that ellison disagrees with. also, TPP would have sucked and supporting it does suck, but it's a bit of a moot point now. if this were even a year ago, ellison would have been absolutely thrashed without getting the support of schumer or christine quinn and would have gotten nothing instead of vice-chair

he's not ideal by any means, and it does suck if only for the first reason i brought up, but he'll doubtlessly do better than Debbie, who ran everything like nothing was wrong when it absolutely was. also delaware didn't fall to the GOP yesterday so there's momentum in realizing state elections actually matter

http://news.wbfo.org/post/advocates-hope-common-council-support-will-lead-universal-healthcare-ny

quote:

For the third year in a row, a bill is traveling through the New York legislature with the goal of creating a statewide single-payer healthcare system – more commonly known as ‘universal healthcare.’ Similar bills passed the state Assembly in 2015 and 2016, but failed to gain Senate approval. With the repeal of the Affordable Care Act on the horizon, advocates see this year’s attempt as more important than ever.

The bill – currently in committee with the state Senate – was sponsored by two Manhattan Democrats – Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried (A.4738) and Senator Bill Perkins (S.4371).

Among the highlights of its summary are the establishment of a “comprehensive system of access to health insurance” for state residents, creation of a trust fund to finance the plan, and progressive payroll-based premiums.

Buffalo Common Council Member David Rivera issued a resolution before the Council’s Community Development Committee on Tuesday, calling for support of the bill by his fellow members. He urged them to consider what life will be like in the future if healthcare remains on its current path.

“We’re going to need to go to a doctor. We’re going to need the prescription that we want. We’re going to have to pay premiums. We’re going to have to pay co-pays. And that is when our eyes are going to open up and we’re going to say, ‘Oh my goodness, we had an opportunity to do something.’ And this is the opportunity right now.”

NY Republicans are like cartoonishly lovely, though, so we can't hope for any good there. Like, I remember right before Skelos got busted, he held this press conference where he literally said, "heh heh, it would be a shame if anything happened to poor people in NYC" like he was baby Gotti.
