JOINING THE SA FORUMS WILL REMOVE THIS BIG AD, THE ANNOYING UNDERLINED ADS, AND STUPID INTERSTITIAL ADS!!!

You can: log in, read the tech support FAQ, or request your lost password. This dumb message (and those ads) will appear on every screen until you register! for real though, what are the technical challenges associated with a rewrite? i'm looking for purely technical reasons, not things like "it will inevitably be a buggy and feature-poor waste of time". why is a forum so hard to make?

these dead gay forums are dying because we're all old now, and no one wants to join a weird forum filled with olds and their in-jokes from 5+ years ago

that being said i hope these forums continue to limp on indefinitely, since i like them and have nothing better to occupy my time with

the arstechnica forums are still going along and they're like 10+ years ahead of SA on the old nerd curve

do they still get new users, or are they in the same boat as us? i didn't even know ars had a forum

people who are most assuredly Not Scientists and whose opinions on anything 1 millimeter outside their daily job duties are almost invariably useless:

-police (no, your "professional opinion" about crime rates is useless)
-polling administrators
-social media trends analysts
-marketers
-TED talk-givers
-anyone not carefully quantifying the margin of uncertainty in their work and also freely admitting and pointing out any areas where they were forced to make assumptions, as well as justifications for every single assumption they made
