I saw this on TV once while flipping channels as a kid, and then never saw it again - until my husband found it. This is Quest (1985).

This looks like every single thing in the Mind's Eye series (Beyond the Mind's Eye, Gate to the Mind's Eye, etc.) which I think were all computer graphics demonstrators.

Back when cursing cartoons on the internet were big business! Another source of weird animation back in the day was Liquid Television, which was a nice collection of mostly cable TV-friendly content that was too grown up for Nickelodeon.

Apparently all some of Liquid Television is available online: https://archive.org/details/Liquid_Television

Nice! Really felt an Aphex Twin vibe off of the LFO video, and Modeselektor reminds me strongly of Mummenschanz.

Here's a clip of them on The Muppet Show, for reference.

There are bunches of student thesis films out there and student films backed by animation schools (like Gobelins mentioned earlier.) Though most don't get as weird or vulgar as Spike & Mike fare. I liked Voodon't dark punchline a bunch.

Loving these shorts (and that collection is impressive)!

In response to the post-apocalyptic shorts, I found this 1959 instructional film about surviving nuclear fallout. Produced by the US Office of Civil Defense, this short bears a rather perky mid-century style that contrasts the gravity of nuclear fallout. Here now is Fallout: When And How To Protect Yourself

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE-nji8-1Ko
I enjoyed how hilariously limited the fallout maps were, with maybe a dozen strikes. Not like "hey, everyone east of Wyoming/Montana missile complexes to the Atlantic, you are turbofucked. Also don't ask about agriculture for the next hundred years."

Very well animated pieces!

While a mix of animation and stock footage, I did find the quality of the animation in this video to be pretty neat - here is Freak of the Week by Freak Kitchen (directed by Juanjo Guarnido):

Yessssss.

My contribution: some guy made a fan series based around the weirdness of the SCP Foundation. Five episodes so far, and it's mostly humorous based around a guy who reincarnates instantly when killed. He reincarnates a lot.

A question for a change of pace: I'm trying to recall the name of a brief cartoon that was part of Spike & Mike's film (when I saw it in a theater forever ago). Featured two kids/young adults basically stealing beer and then going on a car chase, blowing themselves up by hitting a semitruck transporting a missile, and going to hell. Style was kind of a much more distorted beavis/butthead and from about the same era as No Neck Joe/Frog Baseball.

I cannot recall its name and I cannot find it on any filmography for Spike & Mike's animation. Anyone know it or what I'm talking about?

Found this thread going down the rabbit hole trying to find this deranged underground cartoon that some girl animated (and narrated) about a dog that was homicidal or had some sort of sexual deviancy... It's been a while and it came up in a conversation and nobody can remember it because it's been like, 6 years and Courage the Cowardly Dog and any number of "generic name-the-dog" cartoons are the black hole from which no SEO could escape trying to find this.

dog character + homicidal + deviant + man animator = Retarded Animal Babies by David Lovelace (unlinked, incredibly NSFW, on Newgrounds)

Dunno about a woman animator one though.
