I hope no one itt is stupid enough to advocate a knife for self-defense. But I'd agree that a knife has a lot more utility then a gun.

Nothing wrong with a good knife for all kinds of things. Apples to Apples, I have a shotgun for hunting. I didn't buy it to defend myself, I bought it for hunting birds. If I were in a situation where I needed a weapon quickly for some reason, I would certainly use the shotgun, but that was not even on my radar as a possibility when I bought it since I've judged the risk of being attacked and needing a weapon as near-zero. If I was worried about getting attacked suddenly for some reason, then I'd go buy a handgun.
