Perhaps you have not been to the *Playground*.
The *Playground* is for Taalo and for Orz, but *Campers* can go.
It more fun than several.
You can go there for too much fun.

I kind of hate Tress MacNeille, her work is so “generic animation voice acting” that I feel she brings down most work she is in. Naturally there’s a huge increase in her usage during the Scully seasons which were also the “steep decline” seasons.

I think she comes across as generic is because she's been in like every cartoon ever made at this point. Kinda like how Frank Welker's monkey noises sound more like monkeys than the real thing sometimes.

This is just because she has been in so much because she is very good. Yes, her voice is a little overexposed, but I wouldn't call her performance as Dot Warner generic. It doesn't help that she basically replaced Phil Hartman, but her characters aren't nearly as well written as Phil's were.

Total fuckin' silence.
The Yeeeeees Guy was the worst of the bunch. At least the other referential/parody characters were funny at first, he wasn't even funny the first time. Naturally, I remember him popping up more and more as well.

I'm pretty sure that's all the same scene? They get all of their good 'disco guy in the 90s' jokes at once and then he just keeps on hanging around saying DISCO STU forever

Nah, the yard sale was the George Bush episode (season 7) and the goldfish shoes was the pretzel wagon episode (season 8).

Sideshow Mel at the town hall is a bit of a funny joke at first, since he's so weird and apparently still in character makeup, and then the joke eventually unjokes as his presence becomes just a signifier that everybody in town is there and the population of Springfield is incredibly finite. I don't think they've tried to expand on Bumblebeeman much, which is probably for the best since he's a fairly shallow joke on the incomprehensibility of Mexican television.

The fact that the Simpsons canon has become cemented and the current writers just can't or won't build out new material really handicaps the show, since they're stuck with the jokes that were made 20 years ago that they can only slightly recontextualize.

I think it's a little of both. There are some roles where she really acts, and there are some roles where you can barely tell that it's her, but she does so many roles that are just generic cartoon female, and that's partially her fault for being unadventurous, and partially the fault of the people writing and directing her just wanting that specific generic voice so often.

I had a similar feeling about Rob Paulsen for a while, but I did eventually notice him in a few roles where he actually acts with some kind of finesse.

Man, remember when the show used to reference other media by inserting it flawlessly into a scene without holding your hand and telling you, the viewer, what the reference was? They were so drat good.

"Lisa-uigi" would have been better. Not that anything could have salvaged this.

Also, the "punchline" is pretty dumb when Homer mentions "Rainbow Road". Being a modern Simpsons writer seems like such an easy gig.

I lol'd so many times watching this

Including right at the very end when they cut off right before they could have done one more obvious one, Streetcar

(also funny how they went back to the same well multiple times, like with Godfather and the Graduate, and getting a different gag out of it each time)

The Mario Kart segment could have been mildly amusing, but they didn't just fail to be funny, it's like someone took the segment and actively tried to make it un-funny. It actually might be one of the best examples of the show going out of its way to over-explain and ruin every joke just to make sure everyone gets it.

If they would have shortened it and not have the delivery be so awkward, “what’s Mario Kart?” could have been a pretty funny punchline.

Ugh the animation is so lazy, the kart steering wheels don’t move even when they are turning, why have a generic cloud start the race instead of Lakitu, and with so many items to choose from why use a generic bomb? First draft final draft.

Yup I’ve listened to a few interviews with them when they’ve been on the Doughboys podcast, they had a Simpsons trivia segment & guaranteed anyone reading this thread has watched more eps than they have. Although yeah, considering it’s acceptable for the main cast to be audibly dying guessing would be a cushy gig with standards that low and an audience/network that will always be there.

Ned gets a ghost item & it’s Maude. Nelson Bowser corners Milhouse & keeps hitting him with shells, not trying to win the race. Krusty drives into lava and the race stops because a man died.

Anybody can make a flat nothing of a joke. The mark of a real hack is over-explaining your jokes while not bothering to develop more than a cursory understanding of what you’re lampooning.
