I've just started reading John Schwartzwelder's The Time Machine Did It. The gags per page ratio is off the charts. Was interesting to see what episodes he wrote (Homer The Vigilante was one amongst 59). Lots of classics but when the Simpsons got bad he did some of the worst clunkers like that alligator one and the UK trip. Anyone else read through his Frank Burly series?

Plan Z posted:That joke always stuck out so hard to me. Like it really comes off something modern Family Guy would do but with blood and guts and Peter screaming for a full minute. Around that time it felt like there were some more outlandish and surreal moments that were south park influenced. Some things felt like they were directly lifted from Cartman's mouth like Homer saying 'screw you guys' and 'I'm not fat, its glandular'. It stood out badly.

quote:This season’s opener seems fresh. Maybe as fresh as season 20, but who’s counting? From the very opening, which puts an Adventure Time spin on Springfield...'Monty Burns Fleeing Circus' is a full variety show, the likes of hasn’t been seen since about aught nine. Or at least the Pee Wee Pageant of 1913. Fire this person into the sun.

There were definitely some bits edited out in Australia. The one where Krusty fakes his death, the bit where they auction off his boxes of porno was definitely cut. Also there were a few random eps in season 6 we missed for no apparent reason in its original airing. The clip show, A star is burns and the one with bleeding gums. We got them eventually but might have had their first showing on pay TV.

It didn't go down too well with some, disparaging the boot being a bootable offence and all. We had to wait over a year between season 4 and 5 but got 5 and 6 back to back during '95 which was nice.

Or are they just clip shows 138th Episode is a clip show and is pretty drat good. Round Springfield and Lady Bouvier's Lover from the golden era I find a little weak. There's No Disgrace Like Home from season 1 is really weird, the characterisation is all messed up even in the context of the rest of season 1 alone.

I watched through the original run of Futurama this year and enjoyed it. I've never bothered with later stuff on reputation and the original run ended nice enough anyway. Anyone who says it at any stage matches or betters the Simpsons golden age is a crazy person, though. Back to the Simpsons, Homer goes into space in season 5, a pretty risky idea for an episode but they absolutely smashed it. Imagine if that wasn't done until the bad seasons or now.

That's the episode I stopped at the last time I watched through the series. I did skip quite a few episodes in seasons 9 through 11, there are probably only enough good episodes to make one season out of those 3. Then I pretend the last 20 years never happened

Atlas Hugged posted:I just watched the Viva Ned episode and it's not nearly as bad as I remembered. The opening is great. I like how Lisa expressed surprise over moving the casino with the rest of the town and then Homer was about to explain why before being cutoff was a subtle nod to the continuity of the show not really mattering and people should just go with what the plot needs. The Homer and Ned relationship was really strong in the episode and the drunken marriage didn't go on for nearly as long as I thought it did and wasn't really cringeworthy at all. Like The Principal and the Pauper it's not terrible but they hosed with a character.
