In 2008, Dennis Kucinich was branded as too far left to be electable and did poorly in the primaries. In 2016 Bernie Sanders proved that narrative wrong. Full disclosure: I never voted for either because I may be a Social Democrat with Market Socialist leanings but I'm also a Machiavellian partisan hack with centrist sympathies who puts party and political strategy above principle.
