i've been loving with codecs. one idiot spare time project a while ago was re-encoding media like Keeping Up With The Kardashians to play off of a modded playstation 1, in their STR format (similar to JPEG) with interleaved XA audio. it's a couple ffmpeg scripts to get it in the right form (limit framerate and lower resolution, into a format that works with the official sdk tooling) and a fair amount of C code for the player. i believe there used to be a PS1 video-CD scene a long time ago, in other countries, and there was a specific hardware dongle for the purpose. i might get a dreamcast for higher quality playback, or a saturn for worse
