is anyone else hype for vp10 av1? it will be so nice to finally have an actually-good royalty-free codec with real hardware support. the best part is how it only happened because the h265 patent-holders were greedy fucks who couldnt just be happy with what they were getting to keep the gravy train rolling but instead had to ask for so much that even loving netflix (who people actually pay for their content) couldnt afford the royalties.

linustechtips settled on https://www.epiphan.com/ for their live show after trying blackmagic and a bunch of other, they are also stupid so take it with a grain of salt

to give you an idea of how stupid they can be, their production file server was a bunch of cheapo ssds in 3 raid-5 arrays that they soft-raided together in raid 0 mode. and then one of the raid cards died. and they had no backups. here is the video where they attempt data recovery:

the last ac3 patents finally expired so now we're one step closer to viewing and authoring dvds in a fully :rms2:-approved manner (the last mpeg-2 patents expire early next year). also, the last mp3 patent expires next month so you can finally tell turbonerds that ogg vorbis no longer serves any purpose in this world and they can get stuffed for suggesting it (tho thats already been true since opus was standardized...).

Fraunhofer has terminated their MP3 patent licensing program, so I guess MP3 is now "officially" patent-free.

is there a modern freeware Windows (or, hell, cross platform) program for very basic video editing (cutting, cropping, etc). Virtualdub was always my go to but it seems to crash constantly on Windows 10

will avidemux suit your needs?

as i continue to only ever watch movies on airplane seatback monitors i now and then lend the people like pagancow a though, who did the fantastic job of carefully formatting and reencoding the movie for this high-tech device

fun fact! as recently as a few years ago some airlines were still distributing in-flight movies on analog videotape:

the founder and chairman of mpeg wrote a blog about how profit-driven companies (both on the side of patent-holders who want maximum royalties and media companies who want to pay no royalties) are destroying his precious standards committee :qq:.

i can't believe nobody's posted about the newest release of the best video player (since the death of mpc-hc :rip:), vlc 3.0. new features include hardware accelerated video playback, 10-bit hdr support, hd audio passthrough, hidpi support, and chromecast support.
