This isn't really all that different from D2. You needed a bunch of specific gear for most end-game builds there, as well. It wasn't usually sets, but you still needed several specific uniques per character.

Comparing anything to D2 now is unfair, it's gone through so many changes, but you kind of made my point.

You needed specific runewords or uniques to make whatever build possible. If you wanted to make your own build, or if you were just following somebody elses, you cherry picked the best options out of the hundreds of uniques available and combined them to get the effect you wanted. Before the top builds of any given patch were found people spent hundreds of hours testing and playing with different uniques and skills to see what actually worked the best.

In diablo 3 it's just whatever set you're using. Sure you will have some uniques outside the set and maybe some of them are sorta important, but 90% of what you want is just that set. There is no testing, no theorycrafting, no creativity or inspiration. Just a god drat 'collect these 6 items and roll your face on the keyboad'.

Though I do agree with you about the whole 'sombody might still enjoy making builds that don't matter thing' I did state in the video I was simply giving the reasons I personally don't enjoy D3. I think some of them are ubiquitous and others are more specific. They ruined builds for me with their skill system for the reasons I said in the video, whether other people can enjoy them or not doesn't factor into my own reasons why D3 is such a bad game.

Yes, I realize that. It was still amazing to witness that vocal minority dash themselves on the very rocky shore they had mapped for themselves.

Probably not the smartest business move, buuuut, crunch time is stressful and you can only take so much histrionic screeching before snapping. So petty, but I'm sure it was very satisfying for some of the devs.

Hell, when I stopped playing Diablo 3, I still had a grand total of like 10 high-level unique items across all my characters and they were ... not very good, for the most part. One of the things they did really wrong was to turn off the Skinner Box. What's even the point of playing an endless loot grind when you can't actually expect to get any of the cool loot?

If you watch the GDC Postmortem, the game director for Reaper of Souls highlights that they didn't actually turn it off, they just planned for people to still be getting upgrades 8-10 years down the line. Thus the scarcity of drops in the first couple of years.
The astonishing thing is how no-one apparently realised what a terrible idea that was until launch.

I don't agree that you have to stick rigidly to the 'best' build, though, unless you're planning on being in the top 1-5% of players. In this Season, I just finally got a ring that lets me get Set bonuses with 1 fewer pieces of a Set (i.e. you get a 6-piece bonus while wearing only 5 pieces), which let me drop my 2-handed weapon for a 2x 1-handed weapon set, while keeping a 2-piece bonus from another set. So now my DPS has gone up by ~20% which should let me progress a bit further.

The original Diablo is Good if you play it as intended. If you don't remember or don't know, single player would only let you save and quit and if you died, that was it. The project started out as a roguelike, so it makes sense. Everyone played single player as LAN games or on Battle.net so they could die over and over again. Don't be a scrub; get good and murder Satan like a grognard.

We talk about it a bit at some point but the current consensus is 'until our builds suck as much as they did in act 4 again'.

Right now we're doing well in the next difficulty since the pets scale alot better now but if it gets that bad again we'll probably just stop. It was so painful.

Well, there isn't any real place for crazy four player shenanigans in TQ...

That isn't bugged, it just means that all bleeds that you do have an extra 89% duration.

The game only has that text format for increased duration on weapons.

Yeah, the +89% bleed time means the bleed will tick for that much longer. Each tick still does damage as if it were the original shorter bleed, so it's never a bad thing. Just no bonus damage in this case.

Grim Dawn definitely has a lot of refinement over TQ. Sounds like your murdertimes definitely need a ranger to shoot things, makes it go fast. I have a pet build in GD around lvl 50something, and the pets have more functionality/utility there, on top of toughness and dmg. That thornbeast is pretty good.

It's weird that your damage output went down so much. Like I really don't see the reason why, your Phantom Strike should still oneshot dudes. It's 200% dmg after all. You might wanna max out Lucid Dream, since this will improve your damage and electric burn dots.

If you keep getting on low HP, take off Poison Bomb and use Flash Powder. Then once you get some cooldown-reducing gear, you should be able to keep stuns up on 100% of the time. Then unspec out of Flash Powder.

Is cooldown reduction equipment just really rare? You guys have yet to find any I think.

And just keep pumping, Distort Reality and its tree and into the Envenom weapon tree. If your damage is lacking, shove some points into your passives. IMO don't take shrapnel cause you don't have synergy with bleeding and more points in Poison Bomb means more range.

Really though if you can get cooldown reductions then you can do some whacky loving poo poo with Phantom Strike :unsmigghh:

One of my big problems is that most stuff with cooldown reduction tends to be on INT gear, and my INT is garbage. My weapon damage is all STR, and Dream gives me more points in STR than INT even. Rouge wants nothing to do with that namby pamby casting spells poo poo.

I'm a bit behind on the episodes, so I only just watched the one with the Diablo 3 rant. It's funny, I also think Diablo 3 is awful... but for mostly different reasons.

I actually quite like the art direction; for the environments at least. They have a nice painterly look. I'm not so fond of some of the character design though; that's where the WoW influence really creeps in, and I've always despised WoW's art direction too.

I didn't mind being able to hot-swap skills - I think I mostly stuck to the same selection of skills anyway. I don't know, I didn't engage with the skills too much, mainly due to one of my main problems with the game; it's too easy. Far too easy. I didn't need to pay attention to skills. I played it through when it first came out and only died a few times in the whole game, from memory. The New Game + difficulty improved things a bit - it's what the normal difficulty should have been, I think - but by that stage I was burnt out and didn't want to play anymore. Simply put, it was boring without any challenge!

A friend persuaded me to try it again after the expansion came out, saying it had been much improved with various patches. It was actually even easier than the first time, though. I don't think I died a single time, even after bumping up the difficulty as much as I could in the game setings (which I guess was added in a patch).

The second big issue I had with Diablo 3 was the always-online requirement. Just let me make an offline character, guys; all I want to do is play this singleplayer game I just bought - not wait in a queue to be allowed to load it. I definitely shouldn't be experiencing lag in a singleplayer game. I think lag was actually the cause of a couple of my scant few deaths in that playthrough.

The last big problem was that the equipment and loot system was incredibly dull. Everything was the same, no unique items, no decisions to make. Night and day when compared to Titan Quest, for example.

Man Diablo 3 was disappointing. It might not have been to the same degree as Agent355, but I was really looking forward to that game.
