The Emperor Josh Norton story is great. A guy who lost all his money declared himself emperor and the whole city of San Francisco played along with it. He got free meals at restaurants, free tickets to concerts, printed his own currency to pay off debts and would regularly walk around the San Francisco inspecting the things such as cable cars.
