I believe it was the games forum , there was a Let's Play I stumbled across and would read updates every few days / weeks whenever the pay wall went down

At some point decided to pay my
:10bux: so I didn't have to gently caress with the pay wall anymore

SAMart had been a good place , I've sold a bunch of stuff and purchased as well , beats using eBay

I was on another forum back in like 2005 that got made fun of by somethingawful and everyone was freaking out about it, I checked out the site and thought they had some fair points and comedy goldmine was hilarious. I got a huge kick out of the awkward sexual encounters series in particular.

I was taking a gen ed Pop Culture course in college a few years ago and my professor threw a few images from photoshop friday up on the projector and opined that contemporary cutting edge political and ideological commentary can be found on the internet, which makes you stupid. I lurked for a few years.

The photoshop friday images were making fun a hack painter who exclusively paints idealized depictions of an immaculate garden of eden, and the photoshops were goons' interpretations of the actual effort that would have had to go into maintaining these "untouched" scenes of beauty like little kids pushing a lawnmower through it and poo poo. They had the class in stitches

Oh poo poo, I remember that one! The instructions weren't totally complete; the step-by-step process was enough to make a high-pressure squirt gun, and then the goon said he figured actually giving directions for anything past that point was illegal.

I lurked for a while, and finally joined because of games and LPs. I still play games and do a let's play, so I guess that panned out. Also, there's actually some cool goons out there, and goonmeets are a thing and have been going on long enough that the worst, grossest potential outcomes have all already happened, so I don't need to worry about that anymore.

I know it's off topic, but I just wanted to inform people that flamethrowers are unregulated in the United States. :patriot:

Came here frome EVE

No matter who i talked to everyone said goonswarm is the worst and they only exist to ruin EVE for everyone else (was around the time when bob imploded ) and that you had to be a SA member to join them....
I did not join SA (joined red vs blue and my desire in a 0sec corp faded), stopped playing EVE at some point, but photoshop friday kept me coming back until i joined.

I am a nerdy guy so i can relate to almost anything that comes up here when i browse around for random stuff.. games, bikes, history, diy stuff, reddit goldmines.

Where else do you get a site where porn directors, russian seperatists and dildo manufacturers get together to share their pov?

And since i am from "soso" Europe its always hilarious to read what people form other countries consider good food/cars/bikes/music etc....

oh, have I got some GREAT news for you!

I joined for a WoW guild that's no longer goon-only, or active for that matter. Plus I left that server a few years later.

Though I should mention I didn't join just for the guild, I read the front page and public areas of the forum for a little while before that but finally bit the bullet to join the guild.

Now I mostly lurk certain PYF threads and some LPs. And read A/T on the shitter.

Good thread OP. I enjoyed reading all of this.

I joined the forums (in 2001) because the front page used to be funny as gently caress, at least for a 13 year old. Eventually I stumbled into clicking the forums button. I stayed for many years, mostly as a lurker, but left when I went to college and mostly forgot about this place. Several years into working a job I rejoined because I still believe in this format. The huge internet communities (inc social media) are essentially digital ghettos and the people running them are nearly unaccountable. At least here if I have a grievance with someone I can call them names and there is a reasonable chance they'll see it.

Weight-loss, weirdly enough. Some dude was posting about the miracles of an ECA stack (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) and I wanted to ask him some questions about it.

And I pretty much still use it for weight loss reasons. Been morbidly obese twice in the last 12 years, and levels inbetween.

He also didn't have a check valve (I think that's what it's called) on it initially, so theoretically the flame could have gone back into the tank and blown him up. I don't remember if it was goons that noticed that and told him he's an idiot and to fix it, or if he figured it out himself.

I came here because SA had really strictly enforced rules re: grammar and civility which made it a breath of fresh air compared to everything else on the internet, especially at the time.

Ironically while I could go back to capitalizing properly in every post if I had to, I'd probably get chain-probated for being mean to people if I were sent back to the SA era when I first registered.

I read somewhere that browsing forums and stuff at work is equivalent to taking a coffee break: it kind of resets you and you get to re-orient yourself to working. I remember when I had a more regular job, I would eventually stand up from my desk and check out the latest in the Pol Cartoons thread or Schadenfreude on my phone. It really did help me refocus. And then I would go get a cup of coffee.

My cousin told me about it when I was (19? 20?) and how great goons are. I was a reader of fark before that. I stayed because I like some of the in depth threads, and reading along with people when we're all watching the same TV shows.

I stayed because it's a great research tool. I'm a writer by day, and if I want to know about something specific, there's usually a thread covering some aspect of it. Also, politics. Also, video game.

Most importantly though, the self publishing thread in Creative got me to start self publishing 3 years ago? I now have a thriving business and work for myself entirely because of it.

It's still a huge time suck, and as I move on to being a YouTuber at some point this year, I'll probably have to cut back to five or ten minutes a day at most.

Stumbled across the forums around 2005 thanks to a thread mocking an attention whore who was threatening to commit suicide after 30 days (no idea if he carried through or not). I lurked for a few years because my bank didn't issue a Visa debit card as standard, Lowtax stopped accepting Paypal after Katrina, and I never got around to slipping a friend :tenbux: to buy an account. I found by accident that back then you could bypass the paywall by going in through the lepers colony, so it wasn't a big deal. Eventually my bank got its act together and dropped Maestro in favour of Visa, so I signed up. The younger internet communities such as Reddit irritate me, so I still stick around.

Found SA from the "How to make a webcomic" guide back in...2000? Stayed because the conversations about....everything were better than the lame forums I frequented at the time (PvP? Long gone now, Kurtz hated his fanbase) lurked, when I got my first CC in 2004 I signed up.

The :filez: were an unknown perk to me at the time. :shobon:

Still coming back because the conversations here are more...grounded? Take "Games" for example, you still get the obsessed weirdoes and anger that you see in reddit but there's enough people that are just talking about the game and enjoying it to counter balance. There's an underlying cynicism to SA in general that I like.

Also, I prefer the forum conversation format to the garbage "new" format of reddit upvote down votes.

This, pretty much. With the caveat that SA is probably one of the only tolerable forums out there on that front if you're actually looking to goof off and relax and not be obnoxiously obsessive towards others about optimizing your play.

Originally though Penny Arcade played with Somethingawful on a few games way back in the days of my youth. It slowly became apparent that SA knew a hell of a lot more what they were doing when it came to having fun and not freaking out over min maxing numbers. Then the sperglords started to infiltrate many of the gaming goon groups here as well. Not that I mind, for all the bitching about it DnD is probably one of the better forums out there for talking about politics.

Also the GBS photoshop threads back before it was converted into it's current lovely form were amazing and helped to seal the deal. I got like a year's worth of laughs out of lurking before I figured it was worth :10bux: for that.

I joined to play Mafia games on the forums. I don't play them any more. I initially stayed because I went to a small college in a remote part of the USA and the forums were a way to stay connected with the wider world. Well, I was pretty young and the Something Awful vs. Sony's Dating Game thing was the loving pinnacle of hilarity back then. I didn't get the $10 together for another year, but then I pretty much hung out here almost exclusively until 2010 because gaming with goons was generally awesome. I played on some of the best multiplayer servers and with some of the best guilds of my life thanks to these forums.

Nowadays, I dunno, goon gaming seems pretty dead, so I pretty much just check in once a week on some threads I'm following, and maybe post about my cat in PI. gently caress, I've been here for 14 years.
