Hinata seems to be modeled after Dieck and Gerik, a swordsman with good bases and bad growths. the difference is that dieck and gerik were in games with way worse growths, so the other units didnt lap them as quickly.

That scene was pretty cavalier about the guys who presumably raised Dwyer just... leaving.

shiro makes a bunch of really good points that he is rightfully angry about, then just randomly gives up on that argument for no real reason. you can practically see the writer going 'uhhh, gently caress it'

In defense just leaving your kid to be raised by retainers is apparently common in the FE universe, even FE awakening has Chrom and co leave behind baby Lucina while they go off to war, they even address this by saying that yea, been like that for us too.
there's a pretty big difference between having your kid raised by a nanny and leaving them in a hell dimension where they'll be dead by the time their parents have aged a year if left alone and where everyone they know and love will have to be left behind to die in a year if they ever leave

seriously, you can get the kids as early as like chapter 10. how much time is implied to pass over the course of fates's plot? a few months? if they'd left the kids alone until the end of the plot they would have been in their like 50s by the time they were out.

rahjat is actually not a terribly written character in japanese but unfortunately the translators decided to take a not terribly written character and make her terribly written

in japanese her basic shtick is that she actually really likes people and her 'basically tharja' shtick is just her pushing people away because she's self-conscious about her field of magic and worried she'll accidentally curse them or get clingy or w/e. it's not shakespeare or anything but it's at least a bit of depth and it makes her the only one of the dumb reincarnation kids to actually play around with expectations set by her reincarnation thing. unfortunately this is more complex than a tweet so the localizers decided to dumb her down into tharja but moreso, and also replace her fairly sweet lesbian support with wacky gay stalker.

So here we get to the worst thing the translation did.

In the JP version, the gay supports (Rahjat/F!Corrin and Niles/M!Corrin) had their own dialogues. In both cases they actually discuss homosexuality a bit - IIRC Corrin just straightup asks if Niles is into men and Niles says yes, and in the case of the Rahjat support Rahjat actually feels very awkward about hitting on another woman and wonders if Corrin would prefer a man, which Corrin responds to by saying she prefers women. The stalking stuff is also very downplayed - Corrin is never made uncomfortable by Rahjat, is mostly just confused by her, and the two bond over Rahjat's insecurities.

For whatever reason - laziness, 'having unique dialogue is homophobic!,' an honest mistake of some kind, these supports were completely removed in the translation. The gay supports are exactly the same as the straight supports.

It's funny that people complain about the lack of facepetting or elise's 'technically an adult' thing as proof this game's tl is censored garbage when it pulls horror show poo poo like that and nobody seems to care. It's also funny that they bothered to do that but didn't change the fact that gay marriage means you don't get any kids. So you miss out on Kanna, plus Ophelia if you're a guy marrying Niles. Priorities.

I mean, maybe it's just where I grew up but I definitely needed to have the Gay Conversation with more than one potential partner. not to mention the fact that fire emblem takes place in a medieval fantasy world and Rahjat is even fantasy Japanese. I think people would understand two characters discussing their sexuality.

The localization did really downplay elements of his characterization. In English when he's a dick to other people he still sounds the same for the most part, but in Japanese when he starts being a dick to people he's a total thug and completely drops all pretense of being polite in any aspect of his language, which is funny and memorable. And the localization cut out all of his best lines.

quote:

I do two things: make tea and murder.

quote:

Someone, who isn't me, will help you. Eventually. 'prolly.

Eh? The hell? You wanna go, old man? I'll kick your rear end, you son of a bitch.

Ok yeah, why did they cut that out? That's a stupid dumb gimmick, but it's a hilarious dumb gimmick. Come to think of it, his FEH portrait looked a bit thuggish as well
because this translation is bad. not because grr censorship but because the translators clearly had zero idea how to write dialogue that sounded distinct from other characters.

fyi, the 'silent dragon' thing is purely a localization thing. Anankos's title in Japanese is 透魔竜

透: Transparent, Permeate
魔: Evil, demon
竜: Dragon

So "Transparent Evil Dragon' if you wanted to be incredibly literal, 'Invisible Demon Dragon' if you wanted to be slightly less literal but still awkward. 透 can also be used for 'sudden appearance,' in the sense of something being removed from its invisiblity, like a stage magician doing a show where he makes a rabbit disappear and reappear. So clearly the actual TL should have been 'Suddenly Appearing Evil Dragon.'

For real though, the silent dragon TL is a bit lame because it doesn't get across the intent of him being an invisible corrupting force. I would have gone with 'Stalking Dragon' or 'Whispering Dragon,' the idea that he's a devil in your ear. otoh this game is bad and anankos is probably the third or fourth worst plot point in it, so who cares
