Bloodborne is the only one where I ever bothered learning to parry because it actually gives you the opportunity to. Since your parry is in fact just shooting someone with a gun, you can A: do it from a sorta safe distance to give yourself some time to dodge if you screw up, and B: even when you fail the parry you often make the enemy flinch a little (especially with the higher caliber guns) giving you yet more opportunities to salvage the situation by dodging. Plus your guns are damaging the enemy anyway so a failed parry isn’t necessarily “wasted effort”. And finally the game is just really good at visually telling you what can be parried while also making parryable moves constantly happening.
In Elden Ring or Dark Souls the time spent vs risk ratio just never makes learning a parry pattern worth your time because there’s zero chance for error, with it got worse every game until in Elden Ring it’s suicide. Every failed parry absolutely will take of 2/3rds+ off your full health bar off and is a complete net loss (no flinching or bloodtinge damage). And they just plain got bad at telling you who and what was actually parryable.

Silent Hill 2 is a good game but it largely doomed the series.

every dev after Team Silent was obsessed with the idea of recreating it until we ended up with a dozen awful games about the main character’s TRAUMA

Ooh, time for my hot take on console generations: there are only 4 meaningfully distinct generations in video game history. The first is hardware games like pong, where the game is part of the hardware itself. Next is removable media games like basically everything from the Atari through the PS2. It's a wide span of time, but as far as how people used their consoles it was basically the same, you bought a video game the same way you bought a VHS tape. Third is the downloadable media generation, where onboard game stores had a selection of individual games to pay for and download. This also covers Steam which arguably kicked off this generation. And the fourth is console as a subscription service or streaming model like Gamepass or whatever Google's thing was called. This is still pretty new but I would bet in our lifetime we're going to see consoles that requires a paid monthly subscription to do anything.

Haven't the Xbox consoles been a hybrid subscription-based model since the beginning, where you buy games but also have to pay a monthly fee to play them with people? Like I guess you could play singleplayer games on them still but why would you want to

Actual controversial take I honestly think.
Far cry 3 and follows are all pretty lovely games that when released it was very obvious they were made for consoles in mind, what with the huge reticule sizes and perks turning clearing entire camps into a soulless QTE. And no timmy, a tiger spawning 50m infront of you and attacking the deer that popped into existance 30m infront of you was not dynamic ai, was not impressive even for the day. I felt like fc3 was insulting my intelligence when I was playing it. And blood dragon was just a retheme with the same exact core problems, just the annoying characters and lovely plot was fixed.
Far cry 2 was pretty fantastic when it came out with a couple of huge annoyances, but now is pretty much unplayable.

The only good thing Far Cry did is the one where you beat the game if you go afk for ten minutes in the intro. Saves you a lot of time doing boring rear end shooting and tedious animal skinning.

Far Cry at least gave us Blood Dragon. It's definitely a product of its time, but it was so much more fun than anything else in the tower-based exploration genre at the time. It was a breath of fresh air.

I dunno about the room, I get bored midway through every time and I've never actually completed it, but yeah Shattered Memories is under-rated. It's got the thickest sleazy small town malaise atmosphere, especially if you play it that way which is cool.

I dunno if it's better than the first three but I like it at least as much.

i thought Primal was kind of interesting as well. maybe a failed experiment, but still an experiment that changed things up a bit, and if you turned off all UI elements and also changed the video settings to grayscale, you could pretend it was Beastmaster: the video game.

Primal's failure can also be put squarely on Blood Dragon's shoulders. It was was lightning in a bottle, and when Ubisoft heard "This DLC is so good, it could have been its own release", they learned the absolute wrong lesson from it.

charging full price for it was idiotic of course, but i think it wouldve done relatively poorly even as a free addon because there just wasnt much to it. it was a good idea but not a good game.

wouldve been cool if it had led to more experiments and trying out that formula in increasingly bizarre and divergent settings but it seems the opposite happened. imo fc4 was the last even decent game in the series and the last two main titles were super formulaic and boring af.

the last one especially seems like a cynical "spend all the budget on a celebrity and phone in everything else" move that seems to have finished off any interest in the series even from longtime fans.

I dunno games are weird. I had Sechiro 'click' during the Lady Butterfly fight and happily went through the entire game despite its low points because getting the timing and rhythm of fights along with getting the louder 'CHING' sound of a perfect parry hit all the serotonin synapses in my dying brain

And then I tried Bloodborne and never got the timing of the gun parries and it never felt right and I dropped it after 2 hours

Same here, I was having a hard time up to Lady Butterfly and died to her tons of times until something clicked and I felt like Neo figuring out the matrix.

ABSOLUTE FUCKING GUDGEON
The Room is a piece of trash, but it's the video game version of a bad horror movie - it's the right kind of trash to be enjoyable. I love being stuck in the tiny room and the hauntings, they did spook me. I like how it's outside of Silent Hill, so it insinuates that the corruption is spreading outside the town. I both loved and hated how the end battle was directly impacted by how well you did protecting Eileen. Because escort missions feel like such bullshit in general, giving it stakes that how well you protected her effected the ending you got made it have more value than just getting her from point A to point B. I like how it completes the story from SH2 in the same way that SH3 completes the story from SH1, so you essentially have two sets of complete story pairs, SH1/3 and SH2/4.

But it was so rushed to production - the choice to make so much in the room itself is clearly an efficiency choice because they didn't have time to build a big world. It's so full of repeating enemy mobs and unfinished things like the burping nurses, just absolutely slapped together, that it's understandably reviled. The story itself feels very much built on tiny spook gags from SH2 taken in wild directions, and is nowhere near as good as SH2 which invites inevitable comparisons that leave it wanting. The fact it's a hot mess endears it more to me personally, but I get why people would hate it.

To be honest I never played The Room past the halfway point. It was my first SH and I thought it was pretty neat, then a few years later I played SH3 instead for some reason (it was pretty good at the time).

i assumed that poster was referring to how a lot of ubisoft open world games have overly long forced tutorial sections that are extremely boring and tedious to get through before you can play the actual game part of the game. like a lot of them seem intended for an audience that does not know what video games are and needs every single mechanic in the game explained and demonstrated one by one. tho ubisoft is hardly the only company guilty of that poo poo

It doesn't work a lot. I won't buy an Ubisoft game ever again if it requires anything but Steam.

Companies need to shut the gently caress up. Valve won the war, accept it and stop trying to push your rear end in a top hat idiot platforms on everybody. Sorry you don't have a license to print money, but you never will. It sucks for anyone who isn't Valve. But that's the way it is.

Actually I'll qualify that: if you do it the way GOG does it you're good. Give me DRM-free downloads and I'll buy your poo poo all day every day. But I will not EVER allow another stupid rear end launcher onto my system.
