So, Starcraft 2 massively improved the pathing and UI from Brood War, but it turns out this ruins Brood War. BW has the curious property that, due to stupid unit AI, there is a nearly infinite amount of actions you could take that change the way a battle plays out.

Also true of being able to select multiple buildings at once in SC2, which was controversial when it was announced since it simplifies things and lowers the skill ceiling. RTS games are in a weird place where UI design and game design are kind of the same thing so it's hard to make the game feel better to play without removing depth.

Is this an unpopular opinion? Because it definitely belongs in the "Cool and Good Videogame Opinions!" thread

NV > FO3 is not a weird opinion, but saying it's better than 1 and 2 will annoy the grognards and saying it's better than 4 will annoy the kids, and he just said both of those things at the same time. *Judge Judy voice* I'll allow it!

Skyrim was dumb because if a grizzly bear attacks you, you have only to slash it a few times with your dagger because you're a blade expert, but you're in for a real fight if you run afoul of a frozen mummy in lovely armor even if you hit square on its rotting skull with Volendrung.

This happens in a lot of RPGs though, it's a consequence of Numbers Go Up design. Either you force the player to grind rabbits and snakes for a few hours, or you go ahead and give them a real fight and set the seeds for narrative dissonance later on, while also letting slip the fact that XP/Level is just a pacing mechanism that doesn't mean anything in terms of the player's actual power or agency in the game.
