The apparatuses that monitor and manage the American empire are an opaque and open secret. These institutions are neither gods nor men, something in between, a hive mind divided and set against itself. A virulent strain is now ascendant in power and a reaction has occurred in the system. Which one endures and which one cracks. A classic drama, in many ways.

Helsing posted:It's funny how most of Nixon's political career is forgotten now and people just remember him as the guy who opened up diplomatic relations with China and then was taken down by Watergate. Really everything about Nixon is interesting, he's like a dense chocolate cake and a complete mess of one too. Of particular note is his stuff on the command economy, price controls, grain reserves and his use of the police state, but his role with China really is the biggest thing to take away. Imagine of China was still as estranged to the USA as Iran or something. It really was a big deal and to this day the groundwork is set for even closer American-Chinese relations, it's just domestic political and economic situations are standing in the way. A big deal, but potentially only short or medium term.
