I finally got to ride the bike some after a long winter hiatus. Conditions are still sort of poo poo and I've just been commuting but it's still super fun and feels good to scratch that itch. I caught myself doing some very basic newbie mistakes on the bike yesterday, I'm definitely a bit rusty and I need to actively work on some fundamentals. Like, the proper muscles to tense up when things get a little hairy are in the legs, not the arms. Though I was done with that poo poo a long time ago but seemingly not.

Today would have been an excellent start to the season but this weekend was already packed and next weekend is rain, then I'm out of town. April is when I'll get started again.

you can actually inflate your scrote pretty safely with sterile saline, syringes, needles, and aseptic technique. its a niche kink iirc

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

cleaned the starter button and it stopped binding. jumped the battery and it fired up. i'm going to change the oil before i let myself off the leash but im stoked

Now that's what I call a geekMAN!
Almost dumped the Bonneville today, but in a way that both would have gone far worse even a year ago and that left me feeling really good about how I reacted.

How I hosed up: Going into a roundabout, I almost shifted down into 1st but thought I’d be fine in 2nd. Realized I missed my exit and decided to just keep goin aground so I wouldn’t have to backtrack.

I was going just a hair wide because of when my plan changed and saw that I wasn’t going to be able to avoid going through some remnants of the gravel they threw down over the winter that had collected in a corner.

Did not target fixate. Looked where I wanted to go. The back tire slid right when I expected it to. Stood the bike up now that I had turned enough not to hit a berm, down shifted, feathered the front brake to shed a little speed, and went on my way.

Kept waiting for a rush of adrenaline to hit, but I felt totally calm afterwards. I knew what I did wrong. The back tire tried to squirrel away from me, but I never lost control. Just one of those learning moments.

Would have been better to just not gently caress up, but loving up and keeping my cool was the next best outcome.

My next bike once I get the Harley sold is gonna be a lovely little dual sport I am gonna be so stupid on.

I have a week off work and there was one single nice spring day when I didn't get to ride because of family obligations, then the weather turned to proper poo poo and now there's half a foot of snow on the ground, I'm sure they're out in force spreading salt too. My bike's road legal status lapsed since I didn't manage to get it inspected in time and I think I have a cold coming on. Next week looks to be warm and nice and I'll get the inspection sorted as soon as the ground is bare again but this still sucks. So I'm at home feeling miserable, looking at light dual sports as a second bike (I am convinced it is The Way). This popped up:

1989 Cagiva T4 350R. I ain't buying that for any number of reasons but it looks really clean and the power/weight specs look right and it's cheap. I'll hold out for a DRZ or NX250 or WR250R or KLX250 or something though.

o/x-ring (which is to say, 'most') chains have lubricants sealed within the rings and cleaning and oiling/greasing done by the user is more for the benefit of the sprockets and cutting down on chain noise. Lube it when you can, it should be fine.

I want to go to an instructional track day because I think that's the next step in improving my riding skills. The track near me requires one piece race suits (or two pieces that zip together), and those are real expensive. I don't plan on making track days into a lifestyle, more of a one off thing, and I don't want to buy a thousand dollar suit for a single event. It doesn't seem like anyone around here offers rentals for race leathers. I'm sure I'm not the only one to come up against this. What do people do if they just want to go to the track on special occasions?

The $600 Sedici from CG/Zla is competent, that's what I'm using now. Or get a used one, plenty of used but perfectly serviceable suits to be found on the trackday FB groups/forums for $300ish. If you're truly never going to use it again just sell it on afterwards, you may not get all your money back but consider it a rental fee.

Get a 2nd hand suit. You might actually like the way they feel. I like good fitting leathers a lot more than my textile suits - you're catching a lot less wind, which makes highway riding more comfortable, and they offer more freedom of motion for the movements you make on a bike.

The main downside is that you can't really wear streat clothes underneath, and the temperature range at which they're comfortable is somewhat limited to 15 to 25 degrees, and doable but not comfy till 10 and 30 degrees.

I've been thinking about Track Day Bruh for the last year or so too. With used suits obv you can just try it on, but how does it work with buying online? Do you end up getting a couple different sizes and returning the ones that don't fit?

I guess you could go that route. They all post their size/measurements but I agree nothing better than actually trying one on. I'm lucky to have both a Cycle Gear and a Revzilla store nearby so I was able to try it on in person.

All depends on where you live and how much you wanna spend.

There are a few things to pay particular attention to:
- Ripped seams or seams that look like they would wear through instantly.
- The condition of the protection. Foam can deteriorate. Some really old suits have styrofoam-like protection, that stuff is just too old to be useful in any kind of crash - avoid.
- I wouldn't race in anything older than 15 years. Plastic parts on moto suits can deteriorate when they get older.
- Often the lining plays a role in keeping the protection in place. Make sure it's not almost worn through.

These things are most important when you're looking for quite cheap suits that'll be on the old side. If you buy something between 5 and 10 years old, it's likely that you can find it for like €200, and that it'll still be in great shape.

Don't worry too much about a suit that doesn't quite smell nice. Sometimes the lining can be removed and washed, but even the leather can be washed. Hose down suit with water, spray some diluted detergent onto the suit inside and out, gently work it in with a sponge, rinse out very well until all detergent is completely gone. Don't make it a habit - but doing it only a handful of times during the life of the suit isn't terrible.

Dry it as quickly as possible by using some fans (ideally blowing air into the suit) on a warm day. Don't put it on top of a heater. Immediately use leather conditioner after this.

With regards to size - go to your local biker gear store, and try on some suits. The well used suit will be slightly bigger and much softer/looser than a brand new one. You don't have to buy them there, just say they don't fit perfectly and you're gonna continue looking or whatever.

No gear stores where you live? Tbh I bought most of my gear online once I knew what my sizes were, but I assume they will let you try on a suit as long as you’re wearing base layers and aren’t gross.

With regards to “race cut” sizing, I find it’s basically the same, just tight. If you are very fat or muscular, you may run into issues, but if you normally wear a size 50 pants/jacket, then you should also fit into a size 50 suit. 1 piece is more aggressive than 2 piece, even if they’re the “same” suit otherwise.

Sorta/not really. There's some dealerships that stock suits (the one closest to me is actually far more of a gear store than a dealer any more) and one store I know of that only does gear and accessories, but when I've looked for my current gear the selection is straight bad. I think between Canada's short riding season and our hosed up distributorship system we just don't get a lot of variety. It's great if you like Joe Rocket.

I’m planning on doing Mon & Tues, that’s what I did last year (registered for Mon and did a walk in for Tues)

It’s less drills and cones and more of a track day with classroom time between sessions. It rules.

Suit chat:
Had a suit made-to-measure from a guy in Pakistan. Had to pay his brother, and the whole thing felt sketch as gently caress.

Cost half of what an A* suit would have locally (not saying much tbh, NZ prices are poo poo).

it’s well made, double and triple stitched everywhere, kangaroo leather, and in a loud as gently caress design of my choosing.

Downsides: the printing on the leather isn’t holding up. His logo “Motogem” is the same as the MG car logo, and its embedded into all the plastics, some parts don’t fit perfectly (the crotch is lower than it should be, the hip pad pockets are a tad low), and when the thermal liner is zipped in the entire thing contorts as if it was made for Quasimodo being wrapped around a five dimensional torus.

But, and it’s saved me many times already from slips and slides from being overly confident at Gymkhana. What was a “I’m done for the night” event is now a “let’s do it again”.

I would 100% recommend this guy if you’re looking to cut your teeth on track days, but don’t want to go all in on a retail full suit.

I was going to bring the bike out of hibernation today but while changing the oil I broke off one of the oil filter cover bolts after draining the oil and replacing the filter and gasket. Part #20 in the bottom left corner of this diagram, one of the lower two bolts of the four holding it on: https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/2020/cb300ra/right-crankcase-cover

The bolt is broken off just about flush with the crankcase cover after I remove the filter cover - it sticks up about half a thread, not enough to grab with anything I have so I'm going to have to get some help to remove it given my consistent failure to remove similar breaks bolts without damaging everything. While I figure that out and run down a replacement bolt, is it going to cause any issues as long as I don't start it up?

Nothing extreme, just a few hours of rural gravel roads planned, we'll see what else I find and how much time I have before I'm expected to eat burgers with family. I've ridden this bike maybe 25km so far (99% asphalt) and I'm a total newbie off the pavement and a chicken in general so I'll take it easy for sure, but I'm very excited. Weather looks to be perfect the coming days, first real warmth and sunshine of the year pretty much. Hopefully nothing important breaks. Wish me luck!

fixing a broken bolt beats the hell out of fixing stripped threads. i'd bet the soft bolts are them being like "nobody is ever going to torque this to spec, and the case is aluminum, so make the bolt of spun sugar"
