Religion provides real benefits using false pretenses, instilling senses of community, duty and discipline that are terribly lacking in general society. Ignorance *is* strength, of a sort. More like armor. It provides a resiliency which is necessary in a robust ideology. Meanwhile, knowing is not all it's cracked up to be. For example, most people who laugh at hicks for not believing in the theory of evolution by natural selection have far fewer children than those same people they're laughing at. So, if you apply the mechanics of evolution to ideology, as memetics has done, you see that these old intransigent ideologies result in a superior rate of genetic propagation.
