Packers free agents, all are UFA. Bolded the ones I think Ted will fight to keep:

OLB Julius Peppers -- Probably finished with the Packers unless he takes a cheaper contract (he won't).
OLB Nick Perry -- Will get the money freed up by Peppers. Slow to develop but had a great season in 2016. Ted will be very reluctant to let him go.
OLB Datone Jones -- Hasn't shown any reason for the Packers to retain him. Will end up as a backup somewhere for cheap.
CB Sam Shields -- Finished with the Packers and likely with football.
SS Micah Hyde -- Will be resigned. Not excellent at any one position but can play all secondary positions very well. Given the Packers' penchant for injuries, that's a valuable asset to have.
C JC Tretter -- Will probably be resigned, he's a very valuable backup/starter.
G TJ Lang -- Possibly won't be resigned, he's turning 30 and has a high cap hit for a guard. Ted let Sitton go, abruptly, and his replacement turned out pretty good still. Be a shame to see him go, though. He'll be a solid 2-3 year investment for a team that's in need of interior help.
RT Don Barclay -- Probably won't be resigned. Was once a versatile backup who could play multiple positions on the line, but over the last two seasons has not really been able to hold up against opposing linemen.
LS Brett Goode -- Reliable and cheap, will probably be resigned.
RB Eddie Lacy -- May be resigned on a prove-it contract (like Perry last season), but Ted won't fight to keep him. Lacy/Monty would be a pretty decent 1-2 punch.
RB Christine Michael -- Cheap and provides okay depth. Who knows what Ted will decide to do? Keep him or look for another young RB?
RB James Starks -- Finished with the Packers and likely with football.
TE Jared Cook -- Took that prove-it contract and more than proved himself. Opened up the offense to near-2011 levels by playing a similar role that Finley once did -- but he can actually catch. Will be resigned.

Are there any Charles Woodson/Julius Peppers/Jared Cook-type reclamation project veterans in this year's free agency? These are the only players I care about :v: Thompson won't bother with anyone else so it's kinda useless to keep track of what's going on in FA as a Packers fan.

There's a ton of teams with a ton of cap space and not that many good free agents to go around.

Gonna be a whole lot of overpaying going on.

quote:

The Black and Blue Review reports free agent Victor Cruz visited the Panthers over the weekend.

Per reporter Bill Voth, Cruz met with GM Dave Gettleman. Voth reports at least one other team is interested. The visit comes three days after ESPN's David Newton speculated the Panthers could have interest. Cruz came up with the Giants while Gettleman was still with the organization. The Panthers need receiving help, but it's unclear if 30-year-old Cruz could really help anyone at this point.

I don't get how you can be mad at this trade. Thomas can be penciled in as a 1b starter. With Dion Sims resigning you've got your two TE. Sims is a great blocker and strong receiver. Mediocre in athletic ability but he's produced when needed. I think Thomas can be better than Cameron on day 1.

Yeah and he took a pay cut

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article133913059.html

quote:

One of the hurdles that was overcome Monday to get Thomas to Miami was a restructuring of his contract.

Thomas originally was signed through 2019, with cap hits of $8.3 million this coming season, $9.8 million in 2018 and $10.3 million in 2019.

Those numbers have been cut signficantly, according to a league source as has the paragraph 5 salary Thomas is scheduled to earn. But Thomas will get a chance to earn back much of his money through incentives if he plays at the level he did in Denver -- something he has confidence he can do because of his past performance.

Thomas is basically betting on himself. And he’s showing the Dolphins he wants to play in Miami rather than anywhere else.

This was a key point for the Dolphins because they are focused on working deals that may not meet the top of the pay scale but still reward players that show a desire to be in Miami.

The Dolphins are also focused on rewarding their own players who already played for them rather than players new to the team. The Dolphins in the past have been known to pay incoming free agents while allowing their own players -- running back Lamar Miller and defensive Olivier Vernon, for example -- to move on to other teams.

That is changing now under Gase, general manager Chris Grier and executive vice president for football operations Mike Tannenbaum.

The team wants to keep its own players and not overpaying players that are coming in to the team this season.

The Dolphins and Jaguars continue talking about doing a deal for left tackle Branden Albert. Although that deal is close and Albert visited the Jaguars on Monday, that issue is separate and apart from the Thomas trade.

The Dolphins are expected to send the Jaguars a late 2018 draft pick in that trade.
