Update 24 - Tower of Death

Now, before we venture into any towers, it's a good idea to look around the school and prepare yourself. Let's start by checking out the stores and seeing what the students are doing.

Our first stop is Sennen Mannen-Do. Lucky us that all of the stores just popped up in the frozen school.

Wow! What beautiful gems... Hey, buy me some! Pleeeeease!
Wasn't Sennen Mannen-Do a sweet shop?
Hey, why's there a sweets shop at school?
Chemistry teacher: This is pretty elaborate for a Culture Festival stall. I'm impressed.

The Satomi Tadashi convenience store is a good place to stop before going on any exploring.

Frog: I respect your curiosity. Here's a sample recommended by Satomi Tadashi himself.

> Obtained Muscle Drink

Frog: Sample Muscle Drink. That is my, Frog's essence. It's pure love for you. Hmm... Missing a syllable.

You can talk to Mr. Frog two more times to collect two more Muscle Drinks. If you try to talk to him any more than that...

Frog: You're talking to a frog. A complete stranger frog, at that. You must be bored. I respect your curiosity. Here's a sample recommended by Satomi Tadashi himself. Just kidding. I give you three and you don't even thank me? Wait... don't tell me... You're not stealing clothes and mini medals from people's houses, are you? Just go die. No, no, seriously.

I'm always watching from up above. Heeheehee!
What's with the old guy? And what does he mean by "up above"? And never mind that--why's there a pharmacy here at school!?
Ooooooooooh! A frog! Soooooo cuuuute!
So many suspicious medicines... I hope they aren't harmful to one's health.
No's-Bleed Z... Sounds like that'll do the trick, all right.

Across the hall is a pair of stores that have been opened by some strange fellows, starting with the froggy weapons shop owner. Written on the blackboard is "Welcome to my shop."

Bring very good things. Mister need this. I sell at low price, you buy.
From Devil's Peak, huh? Then is that kid a demon too...?
Yikes, what's with the little arms dealer at school? ...Well, I guess it's part of that small stuff you're not supposed to sweat.
Male teacher: What is the matter with that child!? This is a school! He can't open a store here without permission!

Male student: Check it out! With all this, we can stand up to the demons whenever they appear!
That child is supposedly a merchant of death from the demon world.
Hey, are these, like, real?

The other store, located a room down, is the armor shop.

Female student: Squee! Look, look! This dress is soooo cute!
Oh... such cute clothes... so expensive, though...
Oh man, this is soooo cool!

All these clothes have some practical use. They're more like armor than clothes.
Hey, what's with this store selling these crazy clothes at school? ...Eh, whatever. It's not like the school regulations mean anything anymore.

Other than stores, there are also regular classrooms with students and staff inside.

Kiichi: It's just as much the student council president's fault! Is yelling at students without listening to them a teacher's job or what!?
How dare he give me lip that way! I'm not listening to his excuses! They're only lies, anyway. As punishment, he must clean windows, write lines, and polish my shoes!
Honestly, that man... The student must have had a reason for starting the fight. Teachers must hear all sides before making a decision...

Kiichi didn't do anything wrong, either. I saw it before the school froze... He couldn't take any more of that student council president sitting on his rear end... So he just gave him, like, a little warning is all.
A proper adult acting that way is rather unsightly in itself.
I hate getting attacked with cold logic, but I wish people wouldn't get so angry.

Younger girl: Blue curtains and a blue carpet... I wonder what goes on in that room. It's the room just to our left. Heh...
That girl by the window... She's been muttering something for some time...
I'm hunnnngryyyy! That reminds me, where did the home ec room go? I had ingredients left over after I made sweets this morning, so I left 'em there.

Gambling-addicted student: I'm so frickin' excited! You should check it out, too!
A casino? Sounds temping.
Hey, that sounds like fun. We should try this casino ourselves!

The last stop is the drama club's room.

Drama Club member: They say she fought with her best friend over who would play the Snow Queen. I forgot her last name, but I think her first name was Tomomi. There were tears in Ms. Saeko's eyes when she told me about that.
So our drama club's good enough that it can win competitions?
Here one may find the sweat and tears of maidens who devoted their youth to acting. Hey, what should we do!?

Hiding in the corner behind a blackboard is the student council president, who we just heard had been in some sort of altercation with Kiichi.

Student council president: See, I got in a fight. The Vice-Principal almost caught me, which would have been bad. But I bet he won't find me here.
What a teeny-tiny room! I feel like I'm in one big fridge...
Nothing but sheets and sheets of ice... It's not beautiful at all; only cold.

And if you try the doors to the courtyard?

Wow, don't touch the door. It's so cold, my fingers got stuck to it.
drat... It won't budge.
C'mon, let's do what that guy said and like, gather these "mirror shards."
Yeah, let's trust his advice and head for the towers. Hang in there, Ms. Saeko...

Our planning isn't done yet! It would be suicide to attempt Thanatos Tower with the Personas our party is packing right now, so we've got to fix that. Spell card acquisition was done prior to starting the Snow Queen Quest, but there's one more piece to the puzzle - and for that, we're going to finally have to hit up the casino.

Casino

Fro-Man: While I was puzzlin' out future jive, my mama was workin' a nine to five. While I was cleaning the toilet stall, the Man set up my daddy to fall. Ya dig? Da ba shoobee bop, oh yeah!
Hehehehe... I could spend all day here!
This is still our school, right...?

Why a casino? Is the idea to forget about reality and waste away? Oh well, no sense sweating the details. Might as well take a short break.
Male student: Woo-ha! I'm on a roll today!

Well, first things first: we've got to get our hands on some coins.

The price is 100 yen per coin, and a good starting amount is 50 or so coins.

Now, there's several different machines for us to choose from with four games in total. The first is the slot machines.

It's a pretty basic slot machine, but with one big difference - instead of having three rows of three, Persona's machines have five big reels and sixteen small reels. Like ordinary slots, betting more means more ways of lining up a win. The small reels stop on their own, but you control when the big reels stop. However, the real key lies in the fact that after the small reels stop, you can rotate them. For example, I could rotate the top group of small reels so that the watermelon was on the bottom instead of the top.

Once you've got some more coins from your slot winnings, it's a good idea to move on and check out the blackjack machine.

Like the slots, the blackjack is played by the rules and the main goal is to get as close to 21 as possible. You can hit (take another card), stand (stay with the cards you have), or double down (increase the bet in exchange for standing after the next card you get). There's a couple more ways to win coins, such as the triple 7 (get three 7 cards), getting specific face cards such as the ace and jack, and getting 6 or 7 cards without having their value go over 21.

Next up is the dice machine.

The goal of this game is to guess the outcome of the dice roll. If you win, you get the amount of coins determined by the multiplier. When you win, you can also stake your winnings on the Extra Game. In the Extra Game, you don't bet on the outcome but rather win if the dice roll doesn't equal 7. If the dice rolls a 7, you will lose your winnings; if it doesn't, your winnings will multiply based on the dice roll's amount.

So, last but not least is Code Breaker. This minigame has been in several Megaten titles, including Shin Megami Tensei II and Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. This game also differs from the others in the casino in that you need an item called a Metal Card, not coins, in order to play. You can collect Metal Cards from treasure chests as well as drops from enemies, and some of the prizes for Code Breaker include Metal Cards.

The Code Breaker found in this game is reminiscent of Sudoku, in that you must arrange the numbers 1-9 on a 3x3 grid. When you make a guess, it will show your guess on the Result table on the left and then give you some hints on the right. The orange H shows you how many numbers on that row or column are in their correct position. The green B shows you how many numbers are in the correct row or column, but aren't in the correct position.

Once you've won enough coins, it's time to take them to the counter and exchange them for some prizes.

This particular Judgement 1999 has two types of prizes to choose from - totems and tablets. While the totems might be good for some future fusing, what I'm here for right now are the tablets. With these tablets, I can give lower-level Personas some drat good, high-damage skills like Megidolaon or Maradgidyne. With the 19,000 coins I won, I purchase a tablet for each of my party members.

Now it's time to head to the Velvet Room and fuse up some Personas.

Naoya gets Lilim, daughters of the succubi queen Lilith who tempt men and kidnap children. She specializes in inflicting ailments, but is also given Megidolaon so she can dish out major damage. Lilim is one of the best Persona to use for the tower, as she absorbs all elements.

Yukino gets Janus, the Roman god of gates, doorways, duality, beginnings, and endings, who is often depicted as having two faces that look to the future and the past. Janus already has good elemental coverage, but is given an extra move in the form of Megidolaon.

Ayase gets Urvashi, a nymph in Hindu lore who is infinitely charming but always elusive. She specializes in Ice magic, so she gets an even heavier Ice move. Her stand-out stat is Agility, which we'll need.

Elly gets Ame no Uzume, the goddess of dawn and revelry in Shintoism. She'll serve as our healer with the healing spells Media and Diarama, and has been given the high-damage Fire skill Maragidyne. Like Lilim, her elemental resistane will help a lot.

And last up, Brown gets Fuutai, tiger-tailed god who supposedly lives in the mountains in China's Henan province and has the ability to move the heavens and earth. Like Janus, his elemental coverage isn't bad, and I've added to it by giving him the all-target Electric spell Maziodyne. His high Vitality and Agility stats will serve him well.

With all that out of the way, it's finally time to go ahead and tackle Thanatos Tower, whose entrance is located in Class 2-1.

It's soooo cooooold... Ow, my lower back...
What an awful feeling... The air here is as bad as the hospital basement.
Hm... Thanatos Tower... Thanatos is the Greek god of death. Not someone you'd want as your friend...

> Enter Thanatos Tower?

The Thanatos Tower stands tall and foreboding in the darkness. You can only really see it in the PS1 version, but the school is surrounded by an icy expanse on all four sides, with the towers resting in the distance.

Thanatos Tower
Devil, Sing! (Dungeon - Thanatos Tower)

(Amusingly enough, this dungeon shares its music with the final dungeon from the SEBEC route)

The party steps into the shadowy, dark purple inside of Thanatos Tower. In the top right corner of the screen is a clock that shows you how much time has passed, with the time limit for Thanatos being 3 hours. Luckily for us, time only passes when you're walking in the dungeon and not during battles, cutscenes, inside rooms, or in the pause menu. Speaking of cutscenes, let's check out what's in the room ahead.

Tension
Snow Queen's Theme - Main

Welcome to good old Thanatos Tower! How're you all doing today? I'm your host, everyone's favorite idol, Yuriko Yamamoto!

...Ugh! I got carried away... Who the heck are you!?
Oh. My. God. You look, like, SO dumb. Who do you think you are, weirdo?
Uh, hello? Who's calling who a weirdo? Ohh! Are you jealous 'cause I'm so cutesy-wutesy? *sigh* ...Being too pretty is a sin, isn't it? Sorry 'bout that! Ahahaha!
Er... so... why are you here? Is it a battle you seek? We'd have no objections to that.

I'm just here to tell you how to open the door back there. So put your listening hats on! Reaaaady? Then here goes!
You see those two candles? One to the right of the door, one to the left? Good! All you have to do is blow one out, and poof! Door's open! Okey-dokey! I hope you try 200% to get to me! Bye-bye!

But that girl... Yuriko, right? I get the feeling she's tougher than she looks.

Don't think of it as a "trap," think of it as a fun surprise. Let's see what everybody thinks before we proceed.

It seems as if she enjoys our confrontations... And catching us in her traps. It's as Yukino says... this won't be easy.
I can't believe that girl! What a loser! What does she think life's all about? Who does she think she is!? Oooooh, she's so aggravating! Right?
It's hard to describe how, but... this tower has an eerie feel to it.
Psst! Hey! Yuriko's a cutie, huh?

Uh... yeah. I'm glad you're still cheery enough to talk about this in a literal tower of death, but I'm not really interested at the moment.

Nobody's comments really helped, so it's up to Naoya to pick the right choice. The "right" choice? I guess we'll pick the right candle.

Aagh! AAAAAAAHHHHHH!

Teeheeheeheeheehee! Did you really think you could get past here for free? Silly billies! Tit for tat's the name of the game! If you want anything in this tower, you gotta give something up in return! Life is hard, huh?

Thanks! Teeheeheeheehee! See ya!

Yuriko disappears into thin air again as Yukino picks herself back up.

What was that all about, anyway? "I'll be taking your other life"? What did she mean? drat that Yuriko! She acts like an airhead, but she's a hardcore con artist!

What Yuriko meant by "taking your other life" is that Yukino's Persona-summoning ability is now gone. If we'd chosen the left candle, it would've been Naoya whose Persona ability would've been taken. Losing access to her Personas means no skills and no increase in stats or resistances.

Attempting to use her Persona during battle shows that its been sealed away in Tartarus, the abyss found deep within the underworld that houses prisoners in Greek mythology. Our priority should be to travel to Tartarus to reclaim her ability.

Without her Persona on her side, Yukino's going to be relegated to the sidelines for the time being. The extra stats that Personas bestow are of the utmost importance in this tower.

Also of the utmost importance in Thanatos Tower is the ability to communicate with demons. All of the demons in the tower are a good ten to fifteen levels higher than our party, which means being wiped out is extremely easy. The best thing to do is to speak with demons in order to lower the number of enemies in battle and to get rid of any particularly nasty demons. For an example, the Kuchisake-Onna in the picture above loves to constantly use the all-target Death spell Mamudo to easily take down all of our party members.

We've already gotten to see the conversation options for Naoya, Yukino, and Elly, but now we've got two more conversation partners. Ayase's brusque and sometimes mean-spirited attitude comes into play, but she can also attempt to flirt with or elicit sympathy from demons.

Brown, on the other hand, is generally positive and can attempt to strike up some fun conversations with demons and may even play a small prank on them. Like Ayase, he can also (attempt to) be seductive towards demons.

Normally a single party member dying in battle isn't too much to worry about, typically only losing them EXP. Thanatos Tower, however, is not that forgiving.

When a party member falls during battle, they also lose their Persona-summoning ability and must reclaim it from Tartarus just like Yukino. It's easy to see how a lot of time is easily eaten up in this dungeon.

As this quest of the game has a lot of focus on battle and gameplay, I've decided to show off some more of the demons we'll be running into. Another dangerous demon is Arachne, a spinstress of Greek lore who was turned into a spider by the goddess Pallas Athena. Though she's weak to elements, she can also spam heavy Gravity skills like there's no tomorrow and so should be talked to and avoided.

Power, the sixth of the nine orders of angels, can be dangerous not due to his moves per se, but due to his resistances. He nulls all elements (though no Death or Curse, so if you have a Persona with those skills then go for it) and is weak to physical attacks. Because you'll most likely be packing weak weapons and Personas with mostly elemental skills, a battle against Power may become one of attrition. Also pictured in the screenshot is Tisiphone, one of the Furies of Greek mythology who punishes those who commit murder.

Similar is Eligor, a grand duke of the Goetia who commands over sixty legions of spirits. He nulls all elements, though is weak to Expel and Miracle. His moves can be dangerous, especially as he can blind you with Shibaboo and packs a heavy Spear attack by the name of Dragon Whirl. Also pictured is Phunbaba, a giant who was tasked with protecting the Cedar Forest from Enlil, and Anatomy, who, well, is an anatomical model come to life.

When we hit the third floor of Thanatos Tower, new enemies will begin to appear. One of them is Hi no Enma, a Japanese spirit who is equivalent to a vampire. She drains all elements except for Expel and Mirror, and can use the move Deathtika for an inta-kill Curse attack.

Last on our dangerous enemy list is Yaksini, the female equivalent to Yaksa who guard treasures found in the earth. Other than being resistant to elements except for Death and Curse, she can also take your party down with the all-target Expel attack Mahama. If she doesn't hit you with that move, she also has skills that can paralyze and charm party members. Also pictured is Orthrus, the two-headed dog that was slain with Hercules.

Now then, it's a good idea to head directly to the third floor of Thanatos Tower, as it contains both armor and weapon shops. All three of the towers contain both shops as well as a healing spring and Velvet Room. Let's grab some weapons first.

Girl with a camera: I'm Mariko Yabe from Yamakumo High's Paranormal Watchers Club!

Mariko: It's an unofficial club, and I'm the president and only member! My homeroom teach refuses to recognize my club, just 'cause he thinks it's lame! So I came to visit Tsutomu, my fellow devotee, but... I... this is...
Mariko: This is GREAT! I'm SO lucky I get to see an awesome paranormal event like this! I was just exploring those three freaky towers that popped up around campus! They're chock-full of demons! You wouldn't believe the photos I got! I'm gonna submit these babies to some national magazines! If the media admits they're real, maybe my teach will recognize my club! Here goes nothin'!
Mariko: I'm thinkin' about interviewing some demons, but I don't have a recorder. Hey, you know anyplace that might sell some?

Also present in all of the towers is paranormal extraordinaire Mariko.

Oh, man! I want this one, and that one too. But they're so expensive! Hmm...
Considering how far we've come, it's not surprise the items are getting pricier.
I wonder what that child intends to do with the proceeds...

After getting geared up, the party shufflers next door to the armor shop.

It gives one rather a turn to consider its origin...
Not that I care, but the armory clerks sure are creepy.
Look! It's like, soooo charming!
Man, I look good in just about anything. So it takes me forever to decide! Mwahahahaha!

Now that our party is sufficiently armed and ready, it's time to venture back to the second floor and down into the dungeon's most dangerous section - Tartarus.

Mystery

Large beast: BE AWARE THAT THIS IS THE ENTRANCE TO THE UNDERWORLD... AND I AM ITS GUARDIAN, CERBERUS.

He does look strong, though... I know! I'll strike up a little conversation. Umm... "ME MAD. YOU MOVE."
Look, we don't wanna fight you, okay? We just wanna see what's through there. Pretty please?

Cerberus: I DOUBT YOU HAVE ANY BUSINESS THERE.
Ahaha... The key to the mystery of our lost Persona power may be here. When Yuriko said, "I'll take your other life"... What she meant was that that she'd taken away the Persona. Taking life means death, after all. And this is apparently where the souls of the deceased gather...
Where else could our missing "other soul" be? Excuse me, Cerberus? Am I correct in thinking you've been set here by Yuriko to keep us out? You must let us through! Or else...
Cerberus: VERY PERCEPTIVE. YOUR DEDUCTIONS ARE LARGELY CORRECT. YES, YOUR SO-CALLED "PERSONA" IS HERE. BUT I HAVE NO DEALINGS WITH YURIKO. I GUARD THIS PLACE OF MY OWN WILL. THE LAND OF THE DEAD NEEDS NO INCOMPLETE SOULS. TAKE WHAT IS YOURS.
Sounds good. Then we'll be on our way. No need to bother you.

He sure is a friendly fella, for somebody who guards the entrance to the underworld.

The land of the dead, huh? Never thought I'd go there while I was still alive.
Whoa, the land of the dead! Cooool! Maybe we can get on TV after all this! "A Student in the Afterlife," starring Hidehiko Uesugi! Mwahahahaha!
Wow! I get to visit the underworld while I'm still alive! I'm the luckiest girl on Earth!

Cerberus: THEIR HATRED OF LIVING IS FIERCE. BE CAREFUL.

Next update we'll head into the darkness of Tartarus.

Kaneko said that the idea of making Philemon look like a handsome Chinese man came from the connection with Zhuang Zhou, so I think it's less a direct reference to Zhuang's physical appearance and more of a reference to him. Or something like that.

Black Thursday was a disaster, plain and simple.
We lost too many good people, too many planes.
We can't let that kind of tragedy happen again.
Love the LP, Persona was always a favorite series of mine.

A request down the road ,which I wish I couldhave posted earlier, is to show off some bonus dialogue of the police station near the beginning of the game right AFTER you leave the hospital but before you head back to school. Also, dialogue attempting to negotiate with bosses.

Good times, good times.

Sorry about the wait! Company and a job training and blah blah blah. But fear not, for a new update is coming your way.

Ah, I totally forgot you could do that (also why the P2:IS script doesn't have them, sorry about that). After I've finished up the SQQ I'll go back through both routes and get all of the boss dialogue and put them into one update. While I'm going back through I'll grab some dialogue from the police station and throw it into one of the earlier updates.

Update 25 - Depths of darkness

Thanatos Tower
Dungeon - Disorted School

Last time our party headed into the depths of Tartarus, the dungeon of the underworld where wicked souls were sent for punishment. Tartarus reappears as the main dungeon in Persona 3, and Persona 3 FES gave us an awesome remix of the Snow Queen theme that you can play while dungeon-crawling.

Tartarus is made up of one big sprawling floor, with several rooms for us to look into. First, though, we need to get Yukino's Persona back!

Whenever somebody loses their Persona, it'll show up here in the first room for us to reclaim.

That means Yukino is back in business and will join us for the remainder of this dungeon's battles.

Mariko from the Paranormal Watchers Club is here as well, and is overjoyed to tell us about what she's seen.

Mariko: Sometimes these images appear on the walls here, and they look like you guys! I took a few snaps. I'll give you a print once the film's developed! Not many people have photos of their own ghosts!

What do you mean, "you guys" plural? That whole Elly getting knocked out and her Persona disappearing thing was just an example, you see? I'm not bad at video games or anything.

This place is very different from our common perception of the underworld.
If I die, I'm going straight to heaven for sure! So this is the last time I'm gonna be seeing the underworld! Yep.
Seeing my own Persona like this drives home how mysterious a Persona really is.

We could just grab our Persona and run, but there's some other goodies to be found deeper within Tartarus's walls

Other than the appearance of demons who usually start showing up on Thanatos Tower floor 3 and up, Tartarus also has large sections of dark areas for you to stumble through.

Makes me think I might be powerless after all.
Thanatos Tower and Tartarus... It's all like something from Greek mythology.
It's kinda nice, having everyone work together toward something like this.
It sucks that this happened to our school, no doubt about that... But then again, it's a break from our boring everyday lives! That's kinda cool!

I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, Brown. Most rooms in Tartarus are treasure rooms, usually containing weapons or totems for fusions.

But there's some treasure that's more useful than others, contained within these skull-shaped boxes.

Mirror shards! Like Philemon said, the shards of the demon mirror have been scattered throughout the towers. Thanatos Tower contains the most, with six of the twelve shards resting within its rooms.

But after fighting along with you, I get it now! You're one hip, happenin' dude! You're like, the next strongest and second most reliable, after me! I gotta give you props! Seriously.
I admit, my opinion of you has slightly improved. You haven't uttered a word of complaint, even in a situation like this... You've been a real unifying force. I never knew you had such a brave heart.
So mirror shards can be in treasure boxes, too! Let's try and check as many treasure boxes as we can, time permitting.
I always get goosebumps when we're about to open up a treasure box!

There sure are a lot of boxes here.
Ughhhh! This is supposedly the world after death, but there's nothing here. Boooooriiiiiing! Hey! Let's start heading back up the tower and go see Yuriko!
Haha... it's really rather amusing. We never knew each other well, yet here we are on an adventure together... And not only that... part of me takes a real delight in this situation. It really is amazing...
Hey, if we beat the Snow Queen and rescue Ms. Saeko... that's it, right? Everyone will go back to normal, and we can, like, go home, right?

Well, we do still have to deal with that whole Deva System and Kandori business, but yeah, it'll go back to normal other than that.

That's two shards now!

Treasure boxes! What could be greater!? Man! Treasure boxes! Everyone knows what they are, but how many have actually touched a real one!?
There's no end to this. The clock's ticking. If we don't stop this at some point, we might be in trouble.
Please do keep our time limitations in mind.

I can see who the level-headed ones are here.

Another skull chest... another mirror shard...?

Mariko: Yeah, sure! This broken mirror piece! I can feel strong spiritual energy in it. It's gotta be some kinda powerful supernatural object. Huh? You want it...? Hmmmm...

Mariko: I found it first, after all... It's not such a bad price, is it?

Alright, alright, you got me. I'll pay 5000 for it.

Mariko: Thanks! I've been taking roll after roll of pics here, so I'm nearly out of film. Now I can buy some more!

You think you'll even find any film roll here? (Look at this game, showing its age)

Same goes for Tsutomu. I just don't get these guys who're into the occult.
She may be even more of a danger to herself than Tsutomu...
Her pink uniform's cute, huh?
Maybe I should explore this tower with Mariko...

One last room and one last mirror shard! We're already a third of the way there.

Cerberus was right... this Tartarus place sure is exhausting...
It sounds strange saying this in the world after death, but... I hope we all make it back alive.
Hey, hey, some of these treasure boxes might have mirror shards in them.

It's a little bit too late to be saying that, don't you think, Ayase?

With our Personas recovered and treasure collected, it's time to head back on out to Thanatos Tower.

Bye bye, Cerberus! Thanks for the hospitality.

Thanatos Tower
Devil, Sing! (Dungeon - Thanatos Tower)

With Tartarus out of the way, our party heads back up to the third floor of Thanatos Tower. While heading up the tower, we'll see a few clocks reminding us of our time limit.

We'll also see more of Ayase and Brown's favorite things: treasure chests.

It seems that if you transgress in some way while in this tower... There is a rule that you will pay with your "life." But in our case, it seems we'll lose our Personas instead of our lives.
This totally sucks! What am I gonna do without a Persona!?
drat! Fighting without a Persona? This tower has really strong monsters in it, too! This is no joke!

On the fifth floor we get more treasure to nab.

I'm hungry... Do any of these treasure boxes have, like, food in 'em?
Eternal Night... What would that world be like? Despite my curiosity, I dread it...
Even if we had more time, it still wouldn't be enough. This "Eternal Night" thingy could happen any second... What a drag.

When we hit floor 6, we'll run into even more in the form of damage floors, as well as some new demons.

First is Alastor, a name which refers to several people in Greek mythology, including as another name for Zeus as well as the son of Neleus and Chloris. He's annoying in that he nulls all elements except Miracle and Expel, and dangerous in that he has several Death and Curse skills in his arsenal. The worst is Hell Eyes, a move that can instantly kill one party member. He also has Baeiha, which inflicts Death damage each turn, and Eternal Black, a heavy Curse skill that hits everybody.

The next menace is the blue-skinned Incubus, a male demon who appears in women's dreams in order to seduce them. Other than draining all elements save Miracle and Expel, he can cause four different ailments - Sleep, Bind, Charm, and Paralysis. It's in your best interest to get rid of him before he can catch you in any of his traps. Also shown is the demon Rakshasa, demons who feed on human flesh who are thought to have been born from the breath of the creator god Brahma.

Another blue demon to look for is Mizuchi, a Japanese water spirit who rules lakes full of fish. Both of his attacks have the chance to cause ailments (Freeze and Paralysis), and he's only weak to Death, Curse, Fire, and machine-guns. He also shows up with Virtue, angels who perform miracles through God's power. He should also be watched out to due to his elemental nulls and the skills Baikouha (Expel damage each turn) and Eternal White (heavy Miracle damage to everyone).

Despite his cute appearances, the messenger of love Cupid can cause some damage. His most powerful attack is Bufudyne, a heavy Ice attack with a chance to freeze. The other ailment he can cause is Charm.

The last stop on our demon tour is a look at these two demons. First up is Salome, the daughter of Herodias who used her charms to get John the Baptist beheaded. She can cause some nice damage with the heavy electric attack Ziodyne, but the real danger lies in her two dances. She can perform the Waltz of Sadness, which causes Guilt, and Sexy Dance, which causes Charm. The other demonic woman is Scylla, who was turned into a six-headed sea monster by the witch Circe. She's not as dangerous, only being able to cause Sleep.

After definitely not having any of my party members dying and having to go back to Tartarus to retrieve their Personas, we reach a special room on the sixth floor.

It's bad news, like that room with the candles. You know how they say to let sleeping dogs lies? We should leave these be.

Snow Queen's Theme - Main

I put together a present just 'cause you guys were trying soooo hard. And you're gonna walk away just like that? I'm gonna cry... *sniffle*...
A present!? L-Let's take it, Yukino! No one that pretty can be a crook. True fact! C'mon, we can trust Yuriko!

I don't wanna chicken out... Okay, go ahead and tell us what's up!
Woo-hoo! I knew you'd get it! I think you and me could be best friends forever! Oh, I'm so happy!
I'm sure you're up to no good with this so-called "gift." It's a waste of time.

Oh well, I'll go ahead and explain the gift! Put your listening hats on! One of these two chests has a Mirror Shard! We all like those, don't we? And I'm feeling super-duper-generous today, so you can try your luck for free!
But! You only get one try! And of course, something bad will happen if you open the wrong one. Uh-oh! Whee! Sounds fun, huh? Good luck! Teeheeheehee!

With a wave goodbye, Yuriko disappears back to wherever she came from.

Hmm... well, it's a good chance anyways! We should like, give it a shot! I have a feeling she's not lying. C'mon, it's not big deal, right? I take full responsibility if anything happens! So let's crack one open!

I don't know, Ayase... Let's talk to everybody else first.

*sigh* I hate her frickin' guts.
Man, the traps here are evil! This tower's packed with danger for an honest joe like me! No, seriously.
These traps in the tower... It's all a game to her. Each time we make progress, she torments us just enough so as not to kill anyone. She's even prepared a gift to entice us. Everything's been meticulously planned so that she can kill us herself at the endgame.
I dunno why, but it seems like Yuriko is forcing herself to be like this. That's just how it feels to me.

Well, Ayase said she'd take responsibility, so I guess it wouldn't hurt to see what this whole thing's about. Last time we chose the right candle, so this time we'll choose the left chest.

See? I toldja we should open a chest! Am I right or am I right?

At Ayase's words, Yuriko pops up in the room again.

Okey-dokey! You win this game! Congrats! It's just a little further to my room, so don't give up now, 'kay? I'll give each of you the bestest death ever! I'll be waiting!

We're really filling her up now. If you picked the right chest, Ayase would take "full responsibility" by getting her Persona taken from her.

After heading up another set of stairs and traveling to the end of the seventh floor...

Confrontation
Chamber

But this isn't what I was expecting from her cutesy attitude... Hey, Yuriko! You know we're here, right? Hurry up and come on out! Or are you up to something again?

Yuriko appears, and with her will come lots and lots of :words:.

Anyway... You have a really nice face! How 'bout you die here? That way you can keep your looks forever! If you keep on living, you'll get older and end up all wrinkly and ugly! So c'mon, why not die right now, when you're most beautiful, like I did? Then we can live in this tower together, looking gorgeous! Does that sound great or what?
C'mon, we totally should! It'll be soooo much fun! I'm super glad I came to this tower, like the Snow Queen's mask said! I'll stay young and pretty forever and ever! But I was getting a little bored, being here all by my lonesome. And I don't wanna fight you guys, so... Whaddya say?

The Snow Queen's mask killed you and now you're the guardian of this tower, huh? Well, if you're dead now, I guess you won't get any older, but... That's not worth throwing away our lives, our futures, in the real world. Sorry, but I'm gonna have to pass on this "eternal beauty" gig!

You guys just don't understand how it is to be a girl! H-How about you? You're totally the cutest one of the bunch. You get what I'm saying, right? You can have eternal beauty, right here! We'll stay pretty... and...

Ayase's Theme

Don't think for a second that you and me are the same type! You really, and I mean REALLY, piss me off! I would never die just to stay pretty! You know what? You gave up on dying! And growing older! And living your life like a normal person! You gave up on everything you had! Yeah, you heard me! You're a loser who threw away all her responsibilities!
Spot on! That was so cool! I couldn't have said it better myself, Ayase! You blew me away! Now then, Yuriko... Since you've been rejected by Ayase, the one who could identify with you most... I doubt anyone else here would have time for you! What will you do now?

Snow Queen's Theme - Violent

I was only trying to help you guys out! I just wanted to have some laughs with everyone! What about that don't you get!? That's it! No more Ms. Nice Yuriko! You have no idea how strong I am! Beg for your life if you want--I won't listen! I'll crush you so hard there'll be nothing left! Not even your soul!
Heh... As Kei would probably say, "Only death can cure a fool!" Too bad death doesn't seem to have helped in your case! Come on, then! We'll kill all the stupid out of you! Here we go!

:siren: Boss - Thanatos :siren:

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

Thanatos: All righty, time to beat everyone up. Hope you're ready!
Pbbbbt! You're uglier than death warmed over!
Thanatos: Excuse me!? Oh, I have HAD it! I'm SO not forgiving you for that!
Urgh... she's not the only one who's had it...!

Here comes Thanatos!

The most annoying part of Thanatos is his tentacles, six in all. They're not dangerous at all, since they can only hit our party with a normal physical attack. However, there are two different types, each with complementary weaknesses and resistances - one type drains everything that the other tentacle is weak to, and vice versa. Thanatos himself is weak to guns as well as Fire, Nuclear, and Miracle.

In terms of damage that Thanatos can do, he specializes in status ailments and Death and Curse. Here he's casting Slumpa, which will inflict the Unlucky status. As the name implies, the Unlucky ailment drastically decreases the affected's Luck stat and can even drop it to zero. Luck mostly plays a role in whether or not ailment-inflicting skills will hit.

He can also cast Decover and Desanga, which makes it so the affected cannot recover HP or change Personas, respectively.

In terms of skills that will cause damage, Thanatos can cast Deathika, Hell Eyes, and Dark Verdict. Dark Verdict (pictured above) is a heavy Curse attack that will hit everybody and can cause the most damage. However, Deathtika and Hell Eyes both have a chance of instantly killing a party member.

After taking out all of the tentacles as well as Thanatos...

Thanatos will turn into an eyeball. The eyeball retains all of Thanatos's weaknesses except Miracle and loses its resistances except Nuclear.

However, the real trouble is that the eyeball's only skill is the insta-kill Death move Hell Eyes. It luckily can only hit one person at a time, but if it's not promptly taken care of and your party doesn't have proper coverage then it's not out of the realm of possibility that your party will be annihilated. Reminder that you cannot save at any time during the towers and will be sent back to the beginning if you fall here.

Daily Life
Snow Queen's Theme - Sad

Or are you gonna go cry to the nice Snow Queen who gave you eternal beauty? What's it gonna be, huh!?
...I... I don't... I don't like the Snow Queen... I really don't. I'm glad... it ended like this... I had fun with you guys. I got to talk to you... have a nice battle... And now... I got beaten... It's a good thing. That's right... I'm... human. And humans have to die... I was so stupid... Why didn't I understand something so easy...?

I admit I've got a soft spot for a cute girl in tears, but I know you're faking. You've gotta be up to no good again. Well, it's not gonna work this time! Sure, maybe you coulda fooled someone else...
But not me! Nnnnope! I mean, you were all about the Snow Queen, and now you're saying you don't like her? Hah! That's a new one on me. If you're gonna lie, try to come up with something better than that.

Can't you tell? Ugh, no wonder you still don't have a girlfriend! You don't understand girls at all! And c'mon, Yukino, don't be so hard on her! Give her a chance. I don't think she's all that bad. I... I can't explain it, but...

Theme of Nemurin's Love

I wish we'd met and become friends... while I was still alive. To tell you the truth... I was scared. I used to hang out with my friends, and we'd go out and have fun... I had a lot of friends and a lot of guys who said they liked me. Plus, my mom and dad were really sweet. Every day was fun, and I was so happy... I thought, "It just doesn't get better than this!"
But then... I got scared... "If it doesn't get better than this... Is it all downhill from here? For the rest of my life... Will I ever be happier than I am now? Am I just gonna grow up, get old, turn ugly... and die...?" I couldn't shake those questions. I got so scared, I couldn't sleep at night... That's when the Snow Queen's mask I wore in the play spoke to me. It said, "I can help you live forever, exactly as you are now."
Before I knew it, I was in this tower... And I've been here ever since... all by myself... Mom... Dad... My friends... All gone. Just me... I was so selfish! I was stupid for not wanting to die or grow old! Every human has to! That's why I fell for the Snow Queen's offer... I was such an idiot!

I couldn't stand it anymore! That's why... when you guys showed up... I was really happy! I'd finally be able to put an end to this... one way or another... I wouldn't have to be alone anymore! That's why I... I...!

It came from your unfathomable sadness... The utter loneliness and bottomless grief you felt... That gave rise to despair far stronger than any of your prior feelings. Combined with your sadness, that was the root of both your peculiar attitude and the frightening power of your Persona, Thanatos. I see now, Yuriko, that you too were a victim of the Snow Queen.
But it's finally over... I can't thank you enough. Thanks to all of you... I can die... feeling like a human... I... I have to go now... Thank you so much. Goodbye...

Wiping her tears from her eyes, Yuriko disappears into the darkness for the last time.

And the last mirror shard from Thanatos Tower appears! With six shards, we're now halfway done with completing the mirror.

Like I stated earlier, other than mirror shards we also get Ambrosia as a reward for conquering the towers. We won't get to see their use until later, but I'll say that they're good to have. Since we completed Thanatos first, we get three - if we had completed Thanatos second or third, we would have only gotten one Ambrosia for our efforts.

I'll make you pay for toying with people's lives! Yuriko... We're doing this for you now, too! So don't worry... rest well...

And so this is my biggest problem with the Snow Queen Quest - we get a lot of words and some characters that serve as little more than set pieces for the tower and then are never heard from again. Like man, that was a lot of words for a girl who will never show up again and whose words will not affect the larger plot at all. I still really like the SQQ, but I'd like it better if the tower masters showed up again and meant more to the story.

But anyway! One tower down, two more to go!

Our party is dumped unceremoniously back into the school, which is still as freezing as ever.

I'm hungry... how much longer is this gonna take?
Ah... ah... ACHOO! Argh! We really need to get rid of all this stupid ice!
The desire to remain beautiful... I can somewhat understand how Yuriko felt.

Next update we'll prepare to enter the second tower!

The second image is a copy of the first one!

And Yuriko seems like a pretty interesting character, what with her fear of aging and death, but it's a shame that she's not more fleshed out like what later Persona games might do.

This game is such an interesting look into the series, considering how much even 2 deviated from the formula developed here.

Big sorry, and I'm back! I got hit by the LP curse and had my computer die on me. All my files were safe, but unfortunately I lost all of my programs and so have been trying to reinstall and reconfigure everything. However, I do have an update ready and it'll be posted in just a second.

Update 26 - Tower of Retribution

After our trip to Thanatos Tower, our party heads back to the nurse's office to rest and regroup. Brown wasn't here last time, I wonder what he has to say?

Ah, right, right.

Now that we've defeated one tower, it's time to head to the other dungeon lurking inside the icy school. Two demons stand outside the doors, but they're of the friendly variety.

Raiho: We transferred to this hee-school from Devil's Peak-ho behind that door.
Reiho: Hee-ho! It's hee-so cool and comfy-ho over here.

Raiho is a reference to the Jack Frost of the same name from the Raidou Kuzunoha series. However, in the Japanese version he's known as Heeho-kun, a reference to Heeho-kun from Shin Megami Tensei if... His companion, the lovely Reiho, is named for the character Rei Reiho from the Devil Summoner series.

Raiho: School is pretty fun, isn't it, Reiho?
Reiho: Yeah... it's all right, ho.
Raiho: Think we'll make a hee-hundred friends?
Reiho: I doubt it...
Raiho: Hee-huh...? Human girls aren't cold like that, ho!
Reiho: They aren't? Sounds hee-hard...

Careful... Their outwardly adorable appearance is a ruse to lure people in. Then, they use their icy breath to freeze their unsuspecting prey!
Who the hell built snowmen here!?
Omigosh! Look at those dolls! They're, like, sooooo cute!
Hey, check out those weirdos! They keep saying, "Hee-ho, hee-ho."

Along with saying hello to the Jack Frost pair, you can also check in with Yukino to see how many Mirror Shards you've collected so far. We have six of them at the moment.

> Go to Devil's Peak?

Now for the main reason we're here... Devil's Peak.

Devil's Peak
Dungeon - Devil's Peak

Devil's Peak is this route's version of the Mikage Ruins - a dungeon that can always be accessed that has all of the non-boss enemies in the game. This is especially useful for the Snow Queen Quest, as the time limits and lack of save points in the towers can sometimes make card-collecting and level-grinding a dangerous task.

Each of the towers corresponds to different sections within Devil's Peak - for example, because we took on Thanatos Tower, we can access floors 6-7. These different sections are connected by an independent staircase, so you can easily access the higher floors without needing to go through the lower floors.

After gaining a few levels and cards from Devil's Peak, I return to the Velvet Room to fuse two new Personas for the party. First is Azarael, the Islamic angel of death who carries a book where he inscribes and erases all those who are born and die. Other than the heavy Curse attack Dark Verdict and the attack-boosting Tarukaja, I equip him with the heavy fire attack Maragidyne. He's especially useful due to the fact that he nulls all elements.

The other Persona I fuse is Pyro Jack, who comes from the will-o'-the-whisp phenomenon in which a distant person carrying a lantern would appear to be a spirit. He's not much, especially with his multiple elemental weaknesses, but giving him the full-heal move Mediarahan allows Ayase to be our low-cost healer.

With that taken care of, the party can head out to the library in order to take on the next tower.

Well, as long as you have my back! With Brown's help, we're sure to get through this in one piece.

> Enter Nemesis Tower?

Yes, sir!

Nemesis Tower
Invasion (Dungeon - Nemesis Tower)

Nemesis Tower shares a tileset with the SEBEC route's Kama Palace dungeon. We had to deal with a haughty, queen-like ruler there, maybe we'll have to deal with one here as well? No choice but to step further inside.

Tension
Snow Queen's Theme - Main

Haughty voice: Good day to you all. It's a delight to see you here in this tower. Allow me to extend a warm welcome. Ohohohohohohohohoho!

My goodness! The vaunted ojousama laugh...!

I assume you're the guardian of this tower... Can't you even appear before us? Haha... I suppose there's nothing to be done for it... You call yourself a guardian, but you're powerless without the Snow Queen!
Yeah, you hear that? You're scared of us, aren't you? Hahaha! Hey guys! This tower's boss seems, like, totally weak, huh? Lucky us! Hahahahaha!

What a litter of witless, yapping whelps you are! But it's all to the good... I think you can keep me entertained for a while. Weak playmates fall so easily I rarely get to enjoy my sport! Ohohoho... I haven't introduced myself, have I?
My deepest apologies. I am the Snow Queen's faithful servant... The guardian of Nemesis Tower... Michiko Matsudaira. I hope you grasp the honor of dying by my hand.

Oh, what a pleasant surprise! Such a fine, handsome gentleman! I'll spare your life if you become my pet. What say you?

It's true, boys and girls - this is what a gentleman looks like, whether you like it or not.

W-W-Wait a second! What the hell!? Who do you think you are, Ugly!? Comin' outta nowhere and saying that stuff... You think that I, the magnificent Brown, would stoop to be your pet!? 'Cause that ain't funny, dammit! I'm gonna beat the crap outta you! I'll take that ugly face and make it uglier!

I take pity on you... and you bite back in response!? H-Hmph! I suppose you commoners could never understand my greatness. Very well... Then I'll execute each of you whelps myself...
The time restriction on this tower is hereby lifted! Take all the time you want! Come to me, no matter what it takes! Once more... take as much time as you want! I look forward to seeing you! Until then... farewell!

Looks like she won't go down easy.

Looks like it. What does the rest of the party think?

You know how she's like, super arrogant?
She's so egotistical, it's like she was born that way... And she acts like she's better than everyone in the whole world! Just between you and me, she's a lot like our very own Mr. N!
No time limit? From the way she was acting, there's gotta be a catch. Don'tcha think?
No time restriction...? I wonder what that's all about. Is it her way of saying even without a handicap, we're no match for her? Or... is it something else? Whatever the truth, it's clear that she's hiding something. It may be best for us to hurry, even without a strict time limit to observe.

Alright then, we better hurry up and get going then!

Nemesis Tower isn't quite as convoluted as Thanatos, with the armor and weapon stores conveniently located on the second floor.

It's true that some clothes are only worthy of a handsome man. Mwahahahaha!
Heeey! This is like, totally cute!
Why is it that all the armory shopkeepers wear masks?
There's no time limit on this tower. Let's take our time and prepare.

What? Yukino, you were the one who was just telling me that this whole "no time limit" thing was a catch and now you're going along with it?

Mariko: Have you been abducted by any UFOs in the last two or three days?
Ew, it smells like oil here!
I wonder where in the demon world that child amassed such a stockpile...
Hey, how come all the vendors at every weapon shop have the same face?

Now, despite being a step down from the demons of Thanatos Tower, the demons found within Nemesis Tower can still cause you some trouble. Here we have Hanako, the ghost of Japanese urban legend who pulls students into toilets. She can cause Death damage with Maeiha and bind us with Shibaboo, but is easily dispatched with Fire or Expel/Miracle.

Next up is Cath Palug, a monstrous cat who was raised by the sons of Palug on the Isle of Anglesey. Her specialty is status ailments, able to cause Happy, Poison, or Charm with her wily moves. With her we have Yato no Kami, divine snakes who bring ruin to the families of those who see them, and Enku, a preta whose name means "flaming mouth."

Of the three blue demons here, the one to watch out for is Siren, the half-bird creatures of Greek lore who used their singing voices to lead sailors to their doom. Besides dealing Gravity and Blast damage, she can also assault our characters with Fear, Sleep, and Charm. However, she's weak to quite a number of elements. The other two demons are Kokkuri, the spirit said to be connected to divination game of the same name, and Wyvern, two-legged dragon-like creatures who attacked with their barbed tails.

Last to look at is Malphas, the president of Hell who governs over 40 legions. It can inflict both Charm and Paralyze, and nulls all elements. Along with him is Teketeke, the ghost of a girl who was split in two by a train, and Haokah, a hunting god who used the wind as sticks to beat the drums of thunder.

After making our way through hordes of demons, the party makes it to the third floor and steps inside the doors.

Strange Atmosphere
Tension

Whoa there. So, uh... what did I just walk into? Want me to come back later?

Mr. Devilish: And you get to drink all you want... You should be happy, you gluttonous little porker! Now gon on! Drink, drink, and drink some more! Hahahahahaha!
Mr. Devilish: And you, four-eyes! What're you sticking your rear end in the air like that for? It only counts as a push-up if your whole body is close to the ground! If you keep doing it wrong, I'll have to give you more reps again! Hahahahaha!

Ugh... Uuuuuuurgh! Bluuuuugh! *cough* *gag* *puke* S-Stop...! H-Help me! P-Please, n-no more milk...! I'm lactose-intolerant!

Ugh...! I... I can't do this...! I... I'm a thinking man... My brain is my strongest... muscle... My arms... simply aren't made... to do... push-ups...!
Toro!? And Tsutomu! What're you guys doing here!? I thought you were both back at school!
Please... stop! I beg you! B-Bluuuuuuurrrgh! I... I'm gonna die... Ugh...

Mr. Devilish: You have to keep drinking! Think of yourself as a machine... An automation made to consume milk!
I... *pant* can't move... anymore... Ha... Hahaha... Ahahahaha... haha...
Mr. Devilish: Keep it up, dork! Don't lose it yet! It's Lady Michiko who'll deal with you two in the end! If you break now, she'll definitely punish me for it!

We must do something about it now, before it becomes too late!
Hahaha! Wow! A fairy! Haha... hahaha... I really saw it, Mom! Hahahaha...
*puke* *cough* *hack* ...! Huh...? Y-Yuka! You guys! P-P-P-Please save me!
Uhhhh... Save these two goons...? I wanna say, "No way!" But like, why's Michiko doing this? Is there some point I'm not getting?

Snow Queen's Theme - Main

Good day to you again, Miss Michiko.

And ugliness is unforgivable! Therefore I, the acme of attractiveness, am punishing these sinners! Do you understand, whelps? Ohohohohoho!
Who the HELL do you think you are!? You stuck-up bitch! How dare you do this to Toro and Devil-Boy!? Oh, there was a line there, and you just crossed it! Cut this out and get those chains off them right now!
Oh, you care deeply for your friends, mm? What a beautiful friendship, yes? Ohohohohoho! How splendid! Hah! "Friendship"! Then in honor of your admirable friendship... I'll tell you where the key is so you can free these ugly fellows from their chains! It can be found on the topmost floor of this tower... That's right--it's in my care!
Ohohoho! If you wish to save your precious friends, come to me without delay! Ohohoho! Exit the door on your left and follow the path to reach my room in no time... Ohohohohoho! However...

You may find one through the door behind me. The Mirror Shard is kept within a large chest there... Along with a hint to defeat me. Ohohohohohohoho! Remember, there's no time restriction in this tower! Spend as much time as you like searching! You only have to ask that your friends endure the torture a while longer. Ohohohohohoho!
The choice is yours! I'll see you soon! Ohohoho! Ohohohohohohoho!

Blurrrrgh... T-The key... please...!
Ugh... Uuuuuugh... Where... oh where... is the key... to unchain my heart...? *gasp* *pant*
Mr. Devilish: What are you doing!? Stop slacking! Hahahahaha! Gulp that milk! Work those muscles!
We gotta help them, but we need that Mirror Shard, too. What should we do?

Hmmm... What to do? I don't know if we'd call these two our "friends" and we do need those shards, but on the other hand... We need to weigh our options.

I wanna help 'em out!

I mean, they're kinda lame...

It seems opinions are divided even within the party. However, there is one thing we can all agree on:

Gah, I can't stand that Michiko!
Michiko... We'll get you for this...!

I saw Raiho and immediately :psyduck:'d since this game predates Raidou by like a decade. It makes a lot more sense now that you've pointed out it was originally just a Frost in a similar costume and a different name.

I take Yukino was right and you're still on a time limit if you want to save the NPCs? Otherwise it seems too benevolent for a game like P1.

It's kinda odd what fairy tales the Japanese like, too. The Snow Queen isn't a terribly well known one outside the Nordics and Germany I'd think?

Well, it is apparently what they say Frozen is based on! Very, very, very loosely based that is.

Loose enough that someone explained exactly in what ways Frozen was an adaptation of that folk tale, and I still called bull.

That's what happens when a studio changes gears half way through production (Elsa was originally the villain).

But as for the Snow Queen, it's one of the more popular of Hans Christian Andersen's stories to adapt, and one of the less depressing, and this is a series all about finding the most obscure folk story to fish a monster out of out.
