I was terribly ill-equipped to make sense of this game back when I played it on the Playstation. I'm not sure I ever once successfully negotiated with an enemy. Gave up by the second dungeon. It did have the phrase 'Nate Danced Seductively' though, so it wasn't all bad.

The sub-persona system worked alright, they were essentially just another type of armor/accessory. You can short circuit the difficulty curve if you know how to abuse it, but when has that not been true for JRPGs? No, the real issue with PQ 's gameplay has a lot more to do with the enemy & dungeon design. Especially the dungeon design.

That was a pretty good takedown, even if it's sort of surprising to hear it coming from a sheltered high school student. Admittedly less 'sheltered' now, since this follows 20+ of marching down a road of bullet-riddled demon corpses. None of that mushy 'mindscape' nonsense for Persona 1! Kind of on the fence about the other stuff. I guess someone had to figure it out, and it's not a nonsensical twist based on what we've already seen of the Deva system already but I dunno... The explanations still out of left field. You do raid Kandori's lab, after all. Why not just have Nanjo stumble across a file or something he's been using to piece stuff together behind the scenes. I guess what I'm most curious about it is why the hell the big doomsday machine was synching up with a random girl who'd never been near the thing in the first place. You don't have to spoil anything, but is there at least more to it than that?
